I Am Broke

I was pretty intrigued by the idea of a workout app that allows you to progress in it. The app has multiple different workouts plans, each with a specific goal in mind. Unfortunately, after making an account, inputting all of my information regarding my age, height, weight, and sex, and selecting my program, I was met with a subscription screen. I didn’t see anything about this before downloading the app, though admittedly I didn’t look very hard. I found no way to do a free version at all. If you’re willing to pay, I bet the app is fantastic.

Response from developer

Hi there, you can try CaliQuest completely free for two weeks before being charged, cancel your trial at any time! We also send a reminder 3 days before trial-end to avoid accidental charge. If you had any issues with your trial, don't hesitate to contact me at charlie@thenicslab.com to see how I can help. Thanks for trying CaliQuest!

Money

Can’t even use the app at all without spending money, it’s not like there are in app purchases that you can have better access to certain things, you just can’t use them.

Response from developer

Hello, CaliQuest offers a free two-week trial for annual plans, with reminders sent 3 days before so you are not accidentally charged. Please reach out to me at charlie@thenicslab.com if you have any issues with your free plan.

Misinformation

I was sold on the app due to a comment on the ad about no paywall. I make an account and boom paywall. A 2 week trial only available on a yearly subscription presumably with the hope you forget to cancel. Just make it a paid app instead of wasting my time.

Response from developer

Hello, CaliQuest is free to download with a 2-week free trial so people can try the full app before being charged. If we made it a paid app, we wouldn’t be able to offer that same trial experience upfront. We also send a reminder 3 days before the trial ends because we don’t want anyone to forget and be wrongfully charged.

Another Paywall Cali App

I was really looking forward to trying this out and messing around with the idea of a wizardly calisthenics app but I just spent 5 minutes looking for the „no thanks, I’ll try the free experience“ button just to realize it was either one payment or another. I understand that you have to monetize your work, and I respect that, but couldn’t we even use the interface as a questline thing maybe without the daily workouts and such? like the free experience would just be a skill tree you can fill out and get a rank on or something.

seems like a good app overall, but I just find it really discouraging to lock an entire app behind a mandatory paywall instead of just limiting the experience for free users. it seems a little counter-intuitive if you’re looking for growth because what if a free user recommends it to a user that would pay? food for thought

Response from developer

Thanks for the thoughtful feedback. CaliQuest does offer a two-week free trial, so you should be able to try the app before being charged. If that wasn’t clear or you didn’t see the option, please contact me at charlie@thenicslab.com so I can help and understand what happened. I also appreciate the suggestion around a limited free skill-tree experience. That’s useful feedback as we keep improving the app.

Mostly AI Slop

An AI slop app that requires payment upfront. You can get a codex subscription and rebuild this for less than the subscription cost. Actually going to do this now. Full blocking of the application without a subscription is a horrible user experience. Gating features behind payments is more appropriate. Just my 2 cents.

Response from developer

Thanks for the feedback. But to clarify, CaliQuest does include a two-week free trial, so you should be able to try the full app before paying. If that wasn’t clear in the subscription screen, that’s useful feedback and something we’ll keep improving. I also want to respectfully clarify that CaliQuest isn’t a quick AI-generated app. It’s been in active development for nearly a year, with a lot of care put into the skill tree, workout progression, tracking systems, and the community around the app. The subscription helps support continued development, new content, and the community we’re building. I appreciate you taking the time to share your thoughts, even if the first impression wasn’t what we hoped for.
