Five classic patiences, on a table that asks nothing of you. SOLITAIRE — the seven columns everyone knows, in five rule sets from an easy draw-one to the traditional three passes and a Vegas score. MONTANA — fifty-two cards in a grid with four gaps. Order every row from the two to the king. ACES UP — throw out the lower card of each suit until only the four aces are left standing. LA BELLE LUCIE — eighteen fans, one card at a time, and a single favour to spend. CLOCK — pure chance on a dial, and about one deal in thirteen comes out. Losing to a deal that was lost before the first move teaches nothing.
