About

Caretta Friends is a field app for volunteers who protect loggerhead sea-turtle (Caretta caretta) nests — from the crawl found at dawn to the night the hatchlings reach the sea. Built for Caretta Gazipaşa on Türkiye's protected nesting beaches, and made to work for any sea-turtle volunteer community. WHAT IT DOES • Shared map of every nest, beach and trash spot — mark a nest in seconds with an auto-geotagged photo • AR nest finder — point your phone and see nests pinned where they physically are • Nest lifecycle — countdown to hatch, a timeline of updates, and an honest temperature-based sex-prediction range • Excavation record — hatching and emergence success, exported as a PDF for the local authority • Field guides and facts — what to do when you find a nest, no lights at night, beach rules • Patrols and coverage — so volunteers don't re-walk a stretch someone already covered • Your impact — how many hatchlings you helped reach the sea, a streak, badges Offline-first: capture works with no signal and syncs when you are back online. Works without an account. Interface in English, Türkçe and Русский. Open source (MIT): github.com/fortunto2/caretta-friends Website: carettafriends.com

What's New in Caretta Friends

1.0.2

August 12, 2026

A nest can only be recorded where a turtle could have dug it: the app checks the photo's location against the shoreline and won't accept a picture taken in town — and it says so the moment you attach the photo, while you can still walk over and take it again. A nest a coordinator removes now disappears from your map too. Your nests are yours now: the ones you log appear in your profile, and other volunteers' nests no longer show up there. Photos sync between phones — a nest logged by a teammate arrives with its picture. Sending the same photo twice offers to add it to the existing nest instead of creating a duplicate. Taking a photo from the add-nest form no longer clears what you typed. Simpler profile, native dialogs, and the beach you patrol most is asked for once and pinned to the top.
