Great idea, but they can’t make it work
I have used cargaroo four times and tried to use it fifth. The first time was fine.
The second, third and fourth times all had a a problem requiring contacting Cargaroo.
The fifth time also required contacting Cargaroo, but was never resolved so I never used it.
Problems I have had:
- unlocking not working
- locking not working
- bike around the corner from where maps says
- bike not on map despite being available (according to customer support)
- my Cc on record expired but cargaroo let me rent and then sent me a link. The link did not work. After following up, I got a working link, but no matter what means of payment I chose; it took me to the cc payment page.
- app gave me phone number as only contact method, another app page gave me phone number or chat, phone number didn’t work.
- chat customer service told me that phone service no longer existing and add page was out of date.
I gave up for about a year, tried again today. I found:
- map not loading at all (that’s today - it just says “Loading…” I did everything suggested by the chat assistant, including deleting and reinstalling g the app. No change.
- chat assistant told me that they couldn’t help more, and gave me a phone number to call.
- no one answers the phone. The phone doesn’t even ring.when I try this number, I immediately get what sounds like a fast busy signal.
At this point, I do not see how Cargaroo can survive, I should be a power user, but every time I try, I get a problem that shows me that I can’t trust it work when I need it.
If Cargaroo cannot work out unlocking bones, locking bones, locating bones, telling customers where to find bikes, accepting payment, and providing functional means for customers with problems to contact staff who can the resolve the problem, I do not see how they can retain customers.

Bicycles look great, shame about the app
Unable to get past phone number check screen :-(
Does not work
There is a glitch in the app meaning it won’t send you a code to confirm your phone, and there is no place to access help or provide feedback.
Can’t even register due to app glitches
Real shame but it’s clearly very poorly designed
Rotterdam experience
This app is a mess just go right to the excellent competitor Baqme. Same product but theirs works extremely well.
This app 🤮 especially for anyone who’s not from the Netherlands or a close country due to sign up issues. That said I tried many ways even tried their support team…. They didn’t even answer after the initial bot interaction.

Great idea, execution needs a lot of work
I have ridden Cargaroo five times and have had a problem four times. The problem was never the actual ride itself - that part is great. Getting a bike, returning a bike, paying for a bike and contacting customer service are all a problem.
1. Right now, the app tells me a nearby bike is not available for use. Customer service told me actually it is in service, but not at the address the app reports. It’s nearby, around the corner.
2. In many palaces on the app, the only way to provided contact customer service is to call. In a few places, chat is also an option, but calling is still there. The phone number has been disconnected for some time. It is a bad sign that no one has bothered to update the app, especially in the places where no chat alternative is provided.
3. At my last ride, the lock wouldn’t close. At the ride before that, I never rode, as the lock wouldn’t open.
4. My means of payment expired. Cargaroo sent me link per email where I could update it. The link took me to an error message. I requested a new link. That link took me to an error message, but then redirected me to a payment page. Multiple means of payment are on the site, but it didn’t matter which one I selected - they all took me to a page to pay by credit card.
I really want this to work, but it needs to be reliable.

Great idea, unfortunately unreliablefive
I have used Cargaroo fives times. The idea is great, the bikes themselves are good for the job. Unfortunately, I have had problems with four of those rides.
I really want to use this service, but Cargaroo makes it very difficult,l.
1. Twenty days ago, I went to use one of the two bikes near me. The lock wouldn’t open. That bike is still marked as unavailable almost three weeks later. I do not know when it will be repaired.
2. Today, I booked the other bike near me. All was well until I wanted to return it. Then, the software would not release the lock so that I could close it. I do worry that this means both bikes are out of service for the foreseeable future.
3. When one has trouble, the app directs users to call support. In many places (such as a lock failing to close), calling is the only option presented. However, Cargaroo has not offered telephone support for some time now. Calling the number just leads one to a message that the number is out of service. Cargaroo didn’t even keep it to direct users to the chat function until they could update the app.
4. I do not know why Cargaroo’a app has not yet been updated to remove the phon call option and add the chat one on the parts that now say only phone.
5. A few days after using a Cargaroo bike for the first time in a while, I received an email. Cargaroo froze my account because my payment information was old. Fair enough, although I was surprised the app let me rent a bike at all if that were the case.
To pay, I was directed to follow a dedicated link. Link takes me to an error message. I replied, and explaining this. I received a new link that took me to a payment page. I was offered a range of methods. I choose credit card. That brought me to another error message, but then redirected me to a cc page. I entered my credit card details, and am taken to a page to enter a pin. No pin ever arrives. I try again. No pin.
I went back, this time selecting bank transfer. The system still takes me to the page to enter my credit card details. There was no way to get to a page to pay by any of the other offered means, they all took me to the credit card payment page.
I was able to pay in the end because I tried a different card that didn’t require a 2FA pin sent to my phone to work.
So yeah, I love the idea, like the bikes, but Cargaroo makes it difficult to pay, get a bike, return a bike, contact support, or even reserve bikes that are waiting weeks for small repairs.

Great idea, unfortunately unreliable back end
I have used Cargaroo three times. The idea is great, the bikes themselves are good for the job. Unfortunately, I have had two problems trying to just ride bikes and pay for them.
I reserved a bike today. I paid 1€ to reserve it for 20 minutes. That itself seems unfair given that bikes can only be parked in dedicated locations - I’m supposed to pay just to be sure a bike that I’m told by the app is there is still there when I get there?
I got to the bike. I unlocked the bike with the app to begin my ride. Bike does not actually unlock. I cannot move the lock in any way.
I tried to tell the app to lock it again, hoping to reset. I try multiple times. App tells me that the bike failed to lock each time.
App then says, “have a problem? Call us,” with a button to call. I call.
Number is not in service.
I go back to the app again, try again. Number really is out of service.
Now, I am running late. So I call a taxi - a slower method given traffic but one that will at least take me where I need to go. I wait for the taxi, pay for the taxi, arrive late.
I know the cab, I go back to the app once more, look around, find an option to chat or go WhatsApp. So into chat.
The person I talked to tells me the bike is unlocked. I say it is not, please send a tech and just cancel the order.
They do, I’m glad that was painless at least.
I also tell them of my problems contacting them. “We are not offering phone service at this point.” A questionable choice, but if that is what Cargaroo wants to do, then they should remove phone as the primary means of contact from the app.
2. A few days ago, I get an email. My account t is frozen. My payment information is not up to date. I owe 20€ for my last ride. I need to go to a dedicated link.
Link takes me to an error message.
I reply, and explaining this. I get a new link. I can pay by a range of methods. I choose credit card.
Clicking on it, I see an error message, but am then redirected to a cc page. I put in my credit card details, and am taken to a page to enter a pin. No pin ever arrives. I try again. No pin.

This is why merchants use services like Klarna and PayPal, but even if Cargaroo wants to keep it in-house, surely there are more reliable services they could incorporate instead of trying this version connected to their own error-filled system?

Unreliable with terrible support
I've used it several times now to hire (or try to hire) a bike. The registration process is a bit tedious and clunky, but works. After a period of not using it due to a bad experience I gave it another chance.
However, so far I've had multiple times the app would not connect to the bike and unlock it. And several times the rental could not be ended in the app.
This wouldn’t be so bad if you could raise support in the app, or even have the app put you through to a person. But this just doesn’t happen. It’s so frustrating and you don’t know if you’re going to be charged for a 4 hour rental after only using the bike for 15 minutes because the rental can’t be ended. There’s just no way to contact a person in support by app or phone (they don’t pick up) and you just get unhelpful responses from “rooBot”.
Despite me loving the idea, and even at one point signing up for the monthly thing, I just can’t be doing with the stress from the glitchy app coupled with lack of contactable support. Really can’t recommend unless they can fix this. I cancelled my subscription of course as well!

Easy, fun, got the job done
I use Cargoroo for errands, shopping, and getting heaving things around town - or a Saturday at the park.
The app works like it should, and the bikes are fun and easy to learn.

Bikes don’t show on map
Doesn’t work on iPhone 11. Bikes do not show on map
Return requirement does not make sense
I was carrying a heavy Parcel 20 minutes from my home when I came across one of these bikes. I thought “nice, a rental bike that will fit my parcel” – but then I realized I would have to drive it home, the all the way back to where I found it, and then walk back to my home in order to use the service.
This model does not make sense. It’s not how I want to use rental bikes.

Love Cargoroo
Firstly, thank you for this amazing service - I’m hooked and my daughter loves it! Couldn’t afford a cargo bike but now using this 2-3x week - the happiness and experience she and I get are priceless. When I had trouble, support on chat was really good. Appreciative and thank you - who needs a car? :-)

Completely against the idea of mobility
The registration process is terrible, but if you manage to go through it, the worst is still to come, as you must return the bike to the same place you started your journey! That's ridiculous. This app is a scam. Please stay away from it!
Wasted too much time on registration
The age verification part of the registration process is a joke. First it wouldn’t recognize my completely normal Dutch drivers license. Then after submitting my national id card, the app was spamming me with a notification asking me to call customer service. I’ll check again in a few months
Complicated sign up
Need an ID to ride a bike.
App crashes
Poor customer service and no one picks up. A trip that should of taken 20 mins took 1.5hrs terrible
Does this app actually work?
After taking an absolute age to create an account and log in, verify myself and my bank account (which it would not accept at first and I had red letter emails saying I owed money for a bike I never hired, but read on for that part) the bike I was wanting to hire showing on the app in a locked yard. Thinking Cargoroo would know about this, and there would be a way of gaining entry, I circled and circled the yard with no way of getting the bike. I was charged for the reservation which didn’t take from my account initially due to the apps uselessness on accepting bank details… do you not want to be paid??? After paying what I owed after some weeks for a bike I never saw, I thought I’d give this app one more go, after all, if id have gone to the moon and back it would’ve been easier than making an account… anyway, I paid the £1.16 and thought id give it another go-still no bike. Called customer service, who where very helpful, and said the bike showing on the app was not where it said it was. It was on the other side of town. How are Cargoroo charging people for reservations for bikes that are not where they say they are? Very fraudulent. Reluctant to try going through the rigmarole of trying to hire one of these bikes again! The best part is, walking round town later on, I was stood next to 2 other bikes, that where not being used-and they where not showing on the app! Perfectly usable. Not allowed to hire. Such a difficult app/bike hire service, I wouldn’t bother.
