Cool Idea, but misses the point?

For me, there’s a massive overemphasis on competition. When I go to a bar to play chess, I’m not trying to sign up for a swiss tournament. The magic of bar chess is in discussing and analyzing live over a beer or two. At the meetup I attend regularly, no one pays any attention to what the chessbar app says we’re supposed to be doing. It’s effectively useless, except that, to its credit, the meetup might not exist without it.

Response from developer

Thanks a lot for your review and for the helpful feedback! At most ChessBar meetups, the 5-round format is meant to be a casual mixer. The idea is to help break the ice and let people play with several different chess enthusiasts during the evening. It’s intentionally not an arena format, so that players who finish early have time to grab a drink, chat, and watch the other games. And quite often, people keep playing freely after the five rounds are done. That said, we’re really glad you found a way to use the app that works best for you. Who knows, maybe you’ll give the suggested pairings a try one day 🙂♟️

Great way to connect

There aren’t many advertised chess nights in my city. This has been the first way I’ve met strangers to play over the board! Great friendly games with a bit of friendly competition.

Cool Idea, but misses the point?

I’m glad this app will hopefully mean there are more chess meetups in general, but for me, there’s a massive overemphasis on competition. This app misses the mark for me. No one I’ve met at the meetup I attend regularly pays any attention to what the chessbar app says we’re actually supposed to be doing. It’s effectively useless, except that, to its credit, the meetup might not exist without it.

This is an amazing concept

It was just so fun to meet other chess players while traveling and to play in person. I tried it out in Brussels and I can’t wait to have it in the US.

The best chess app I’ve found

Highly recommend this app! It’s a great way to play chess in a fun and social way.
