What's New in Chuckie Egg®

1.2

June 13, 2026

Confirmed support for additional Bluetooth game controllers, including Backbone. Confirmed support for QOAP key controls with additional Bluetooth keyboards. In the ZX Spectrum version: the Leaderboard has been widened to make room for displaying players’ rank and players’ full name (16 characters). In the BBC Micro version: the "HIGH SCORE" text has been moved to the non-scrollable area of the Leaderboard. A count-down time display has been added to the non-scrollable area of the Leaderboards, to show when promotion / relegation will next take place. A boundary line has been added to the Leaderboards, to denote the promotion / relegation positions. The row height in the scrollable area of the Leaderboards has been reduced, to show more players' stats. The league name has been horizontally centred at the foot of the Leaderboards . Icons, in the form of eggs which reveal their content, have been added to denote players' current (and previously achieved) league status.

Much improved with new controller support

This is a good recreation of a game I love and is pretty faithful to the original BBC version I played for many hours. However, now we have much improved controller support, I notice that there are certain issues e.g. level 5 and 6, you should be able to press up to grab the bottom of the hanging ladders but this does not work with controller or keyboard. Jumping up between the ladders on level 5 is quite a key move or you have to wait ages for the birds to move into the right place. Still, the update is a big improvement and I am enjoying it. The new key options are much better for playing on ipad. I would love the old R to redefine keys though!
The 3D graphic options do look really nice but they are not ideal for playing this game as you do really need to see the whole level in many cases to plan your egg strategy.

Response from developer

Thank you for updating your review and for the kind words about the recent controller and keyboard improvements. We're pleased to hear that the new control options are making the game more enjoyable on iPad and that you're finding the recreation faithful to the original BBC Micro version. Thank you also for the detailed feedback regarding the hanging ladders on Levels 5 and 6 when using a controller or keyboard. We've added this to our list for investigation. Feedback from experienced Chuckie Egg players is particularly valuable because it helps us identify subtle gameplay differences from the original versions. We're also grateful for your suggestions regarding redefinable keys and for your observations about the different viewpoints. As with the original app, we're continuing to review player feedback and look for ways to improve the experience in future updates. Thanks again for your support and for taking the time to help us make Chuckie Egg even better. — Steve, Nigel and all at Elite Systems.

Fun game but no backbone support

This is a good recreation of a game I love and is very faithful to the original BBC version I played for many hours. However the touch controls are awful as you would expect and it does not even support my backbone controller which is crazy. Really it is unplayable unless the controller is supported. On a more minor note the menu UI is absolutely horrible!

EDIT: please add support for all controllers. Nowadays most people will use Xbox/ps/switch compatible controllers rather than steelseries MFi ones. Also we need to be able to change the keys if using a keyboard on an iPad. The default cursor keys are not great.

We agree that controller support is important and support for additional controllers (including Backbone devices) is planned for a future update. We’re also continuing to refine the touch controls and menu/UI based on player feedback following launch. Thanks again for taking the time to share your thoughts and support Chuckie Egg®.
