Your photos are encrypted in transit and at rest, and stay locked down so they're never public - only ever with the people you choose. Yes! Finally a family app that respects data privacy!
I stumbled upon Clann and so far I’m liking it: the style of the dashboard and menus is pleasing, the security features (like no screenshots!) are awesome, everything is so secure, your data is your own which was huuuge for me.
Currently it doesn’t have a lot of the same features that FamilyAlbum offers that I and other family members really enjoy, however I know that it was mentioned that new ones are being worked on.
Things I wish it had (or will be getting soon!):
• I really like how most of the UI in FamilyAlbum is set up, especially the main dashboard and how the photo timeline is arranged (by year in main dashboard and the by month), and that all photos are organized by most recently taken first (able to swipe between months and scroll down to see all photos within that month). In Clann, it feels a little clunky.
• Separate pages for each kid are automatically compiled rather than having to manually tag in Clann (I have to add photos by kid if I want them tagged correctly)
• With the FamilyAlbum premium subscription, I can upload up to 3min videos.
• The monthly/quarterly/yearly 1s movies are a huge hit, and we always look forward to them.
• I love the widget. One of the options gives you the calendar date and randomly circulates through old photos, with unobtrusive text in the corner that tells you how long ago each pic was.
• The free (plus shipping) monthly prints are also a big hit with the grandparents.
• You can batch upload a bunch of photos at once. Also, when you add photos from your camera roll, the photo library automatically hides the photos that you’ve already added to the app so you don’t end up having multiples of the same picture.
Other than those things, it’s a great app that I’m sure will keep getting better. And it feels so good to know that the developer is a parent like us that’s also intent on keeping families’/kids’ information private, secure, and only available to who you choose to sure it with. I’ll definitely be sticking with this app.
