Great results

Great app

This is a great app for artists. It simplifies, shows values, and helps with paint mixing and colour matching. It’s seriously a really good app,

However, yes, it’s free to use, but to use all of the features you have to pay for a subscription, which is fine; however, I think it’s quite expensive. $6.99 per month or $34.99 yearly; it’s just to experience. I would be okay paying like $2.99 per month, or paying 20 dollars for the full app.

You can still do a lot without the subscription, so I'd still recommend it and give it 5 stars; it’s just that the subscription is pricey

Spectacular

Mixed feelings - not geared towards watercolors

This is a great app for understanding composition, values and basic drawing of a reference photo. I am a watercolor artist and would absolutely love this if I could build my palettes based on the pigments I have. Most of the mixes require white to be added which is not generally used in watercolor.

Could be good but needs refining.

Some good features but there is one underlying problem with this app. I have a fixed palette and have spent a lot of money developing it I don’t want to be recommended lots of different paints rather I want to mix the colours using what I already have. Also colour name is less important than the pigment number …. 2 paints with the same name can be made using different pigment and handle very differently.

Thanks for the thoughtful feedback. The app is intended to generate recipes using the paints in your selected palette, and each paint in the palette editor should include pigment information where available. Below the recipe, you may also see optional paint suggestions that could help achieve a closer mix, but those can be turned off by selecting “Don’t suggest paints.” It sounds like something may not be working as expected, or could be clearer. If you don’t mind contacting me at support@brushlabsllc.com, I’d really like to understand what you’re seeing so I can improve things.

Wonderful app

This is an app. I’ve been waiting for her for a long time. The pallet finding in the mixing recipes to find the appropriate color you need is something that I now can’t live without. I have never been great at mixing colors to find what I need and this helps so much. 10 stars!

Wow! Add in a ‘lucida’ pass through feature and this app would be perfect. Barely have any suggestions except please make an expensive one time pro license. Want to support you, but I will not subscribe to apps. That said, the app is INCREDIBLY generous in its free state. Super useful, super cool. Thanks for making it.

That's gracious of you to leave this positive review even though it doesn't have the one-time purchase option. And good idea for the for the Lucida pass-through!

Just What I Need

My main learning focus right now is color mixing with oils. What i most appreciate with Color Study is that i can choose my starting palette using my preferred primaries and favorites. The other thing i like is that there are 2 or 3 options for mixing, accurate, simple and sometimes a 3rd. So i can set up my basic palette colors then when i choose a color in my reference image there is consistency with the generated mixes because i chose the base colors and the suggested mixes have so far been pretty accurate. I also appreciate the app will reload the reference image with all my color selections after closing the app or the image. I love that!
Just keep going with the updates and whatever. It is a solid app for its essential simplicity. There are many more tools for me to appreciate in this app over time. Thank you!

Thanks for your detailed review! -- and mentioning the feature to show multiple paint mixes to match a color. That feature was added recently, so I'm happy you are finding it useful. Thanks also for noticing the auto-save/restore of the color selections for images - glad that allows you to keep going and continue working with an image.

As a new artist this app is verrrrry helpful. I am just finding my way around it….but the possibilities seem endless. …from composition to colour mixing it is truly inspirational …and confidence building!!

Where has this been my whole life??

Absolutely amazing. Immediately takes the headache out of mixing colors. Love that I can create my own palettes. Every feature is incredible.
I only wish I could name palettes, and although the paints are incredibly thorough, I have a few on my shelf that aren’t included in the app (I use gamblin oil paints). Neither of these are dealbreakers and couldn’t possibly sway me from using this app! I’m already a loyal customer. Thank you!!

That's great feedback on the palette naming and having more paint selection. I'm happy to say multiple palettes and naming is now supported in the app (long-press the palette name to rename). An absolute must for beginners!Really really helpful app when trying to mix the right colours to get the right resulting colour! It tells you what % of each colour to mix to achieve not only the desired colour but the value too.
