Pathetic, Amateurish, Broken, Hacky Excuse For an App

You know when an actor gets older, decides to get cosmetic surgery, and ends up looking like a grotesque and inhuman mockery of their former self? This app is worse. UPDATE: Still a dumpster fire of terrible decisions and uninformed design. What an amazing leap backwards past mediocrity into incompetence. Steaming fecal garbage that continues to somehow get worse. On the plus side, I haven’t been tempted to actually spend a single penny since they released this embarrassment. What a pathetic step backward. Harder to use, poorly designed, and lacking basically every user friendly feature of the previous version. Did you lose a bet or just lose interest in your customers? This is literally the worst update I’ve ever seen. It’s like malware for your soul. Lacks a single redeemable feature and makes me never want to read a comic again. This is clown shoes, hacky, and amateurish. And those are its good points. One must assume no one on the dev team has actually ever (a) read a comic or (b) created an app, as this abortion is a crime against humanity.

Response from developer

Thanks so much for the honest feedback. We're taking this back to our team and will keep you posted as we move forward!

Lame

I’ve upgraded to the newest version that supposedly now supports hiding books again but option isn’t available. I even deleted the app and re-installed it and still doesn’t appear under “Actions” after selecting books.
I’ve also sent feedback about issues with certain books (mostly cosmetic issues like a black strip that appears above the page which is annoying but not detrimental) and received a “thanks for letting us know” and that’s it; issues still there months later.
The original app was perfectly fine; never had any issues with it. I dreaded this forced update and am still disappointed with it. If I wanted to use the kindle app I’d have downloaded the kindle app……..sorry to the developers who have to work on this app :(

Manual Organization

I was extremely disappointed with this app. Its completely pointless since its just a copy of the kindle app. Why would anyone bother with two? I was hoping that an app specializing in comics would understand the needs of comic readers better. I’m talking about filing and categorizing.

I have a large collection of DC comics, following Batman and his Bat family across different titles. Any comic reader would know how difficult it is to keep track of stories with crossovers and Rebirth and the 52 etc. The option to organize comics according to publishing date doesn’t work because you have new editions and collections etc. The current options are hopeless and i get frustrated following any story line.

I was hoping this app would provide better filing options. I would have liked to be able to manually organize my comics into files, and order them within the file also manually, so that every big story has all the crossover comics in one neat pile. Another great thing would be to have the files then appear in a horizontal list, and be able to add my own notes next to it.

New layout is garbage

The new layout is garbage and hard to navigate. They made it too similar to kindle’s app format which is pretty awful. You can no longer see previews for comic pages, it’s hard to view full series of comics, and you’re forced to see people’s reviews. I wish I could turn off other people’s reviews, I don’t want to see them. I want previews back. The old version of the app was much better organized and easier to navigate. I don’t understand why they had to turn it into a kindle clone. I used comixology for years and it was fine. Now I don’t want to use it anymore. It is a confusing mess. Change it back!

New update is terrible

The complete retooling of the app has been a disaster. The search function is not even remotely as powerful or useful as it was in the old version. Not as intuitive to search or browse by publisher. Looking through the New to Unlimited feature is horrific, as it loads everything issue by issue and the new scrolling only shows a few issues at a time and then slows down as you click show more. What good is having 930 New to Unlimited items if you can really only look through at most 100? Unless something starts to improve I will be getting rid of my unlimited subscription because I can’t get the most out of it with the new app.

Why? Just… why?

TL;DR: If you are new to Comixology and are considering using it, DON’T BOTHER UNTIL THEY FIX IT.

The shortest way that I can put this, is that the revamp of this app took every single screen, button and feature and made it WORSE. Comixology used to be intuitive, fast and extremely user friendly.

With the recent changes that have rolled out, the app is now easily the most frustrating program on my device.

1. Downloading takes forever, when it decides to work. (This used to be faster, and you could have a queue of downloads going. Now, it can barely handle downloading one series at a time.)

2. There’s a, “Permanently Delete,“ selection right next to a commonly used button. (Which is just unacceptable)

3. The wishlist and purchase process is extremely convoluted. (That’s always been the case, but it keeps getting worse)

4. You can no longer have subscriptions; you need to individually go purchase each title separately.

This app went from being extremely well designed, to hot garbage in very short order. The best thing that could be done is to roll back the changes and publicly apologize for this leap backwards.

Destroyed a functional app

Cannot find words to express how this remake has made this app unreadable for me. This was created to meet a few individual’s likes, while removing the ability to read a comic like a book. It is the most basic function expected in an app. Why??? I guess I will just delete it, because when I attempt to use it, I just get angry that I am not able to direct my attention to the comic, because of the strange contortions of the displays. I should not have to choose between read one enlarged box of a page segment, a shrunken whole page, or a number of shrunken segments. Those who created this, and those who approved it lack any common sense. I see from other reviews, my opinion is shared by many others. Perhaps the intent was to kill the app. I has for me.

So far, the unified app is a step backwards

The Kindke-based app is a disappointing step backwards. It is harder to use, doesn’t handle series or subscriptions as well, and a number of other short-comings. The worst is that it handles two-page spreads VERY badly. Comic books are NOT books. They don’t work the same way and trying to shoehorn the one into the other is bound, if not to fail, to at least be much much harder to get right.

I’ve been a comic book reader for more than 60 years, a publisher for going on 3, and a UI researcher and developer for nearly 30. I’ve been using Comixology and other Comic Book Reader apps for nearly a decade. ComiXology USED to be arguably the best. It is now lacking substantially. PLEASE try to understand way the earlier team did so right, and FIX this once-great app.

Update Is Not An Improvements

I loved the previous Comixology app version better. The change in reading format does not bother me but the other details are not improvements but they digressed the features that used to make Comixology great for e-reading consumers.
A few major Examples:
1) No way to see what the sales are on the app
2) When looking at individual issues, it no longer shows what volumes, graphic, novels, or omnibuses they can also be found in.
Reading comics is still great in this app so, Comixology is recommended for comic readers but I rated it low because if you update an app, then make sure it is a move forward and not a down grade. Whoever designed this “update” needs to be demoted and retrained in their marketing skills

A great app and experience ruined for no viable reason

As a 10 year user of Comixology. I can say that the new 4.0 update has ignored anything I enjoyed about the app and my shopping experience. It has made it profoundly unpleasant in every aspect, from purchasing my comics through viewing current or previous purchases. I feel that this decision was done without the end users in mind. I moved over from hard copy to digital for space saving purposes. This new shopping update and reader have been a throughly negative experience. It has changed my comic purchasing and reading patterns. I purchase less, read less and as my story lines end, discontinuing the purchases. Maybe down the line it’ll improve but currently it’s a hard pass.

The app has become unusable

I’ve purchased over 800 comics and graphic novels over the years using comixology, and while the app wasn’t great, it was usable, and I enjoyed the service provided. The updates to the app and store have made the experience extremely frustrating and difficult. It’s pretty amazing that the app and website have actually become LESS user friendly than before. I hope that the developers fix the issues and make it less difficult to navigate my own library or find the digital comics that I want to purchase. Until then, I will not be spending any more money on the app or website. Will probably cancel my Unlimited subscription that I have had for the last 5 years or so

ComiXology Is Dead

ComiXology saved my love of comics. Physical comics were becoming such a storage burden that I started loathing the new comics that came out each week. I was on the verge of quitting comics completely until I discovered Comixology. It had reinvigorated my love of comics… Until the most recent update. The application is now completely unusable and has me on the verge of stepping away from comics entirely.

The web store for making purchases is such a mess that I haven’t made a purchase since the “upgrade.” And with the current application I wouldn’t make a purchase even if I could. The application that I had once given 5 stars is gone. Now I’m giving it a single star and that is being extremely generous.

The worst part is support is now nonexistent. What used to be a great support department with rapid replies has turned into a black hole for support emails. Support responded to one of my emails shortly after the upgrade and have not responded to a single email in the weeks since then. Unfortunately I’ve purchased over 52,000 comics on Comixology which have now turned into nothing.

My advice? Save yourself grief and do not download this app

Best Features Gone

The old app was much better than the “improved” version. I wonder, Did they ask comic readers to test it? It is very difficult to find what is read and unread. Like many other reviews, I used and loved the Smart List feature. Another feature that was awesome was the Next In Series feature. When you finished a comic, it would tell you the next in the series or story arc. If you owned it, you clicked to read, if not, you could wish-list it right there. In all seriousness, and this is not an over exaggeration, the new app has me on comic life support. It has already killed much of the fun of collecting and reading them. I have many unread comics, but will I buy more? Doubtful. It’s just too much work and no fun.

What a Disappointing Update

I typically look forward to “major” app updates, but everything about this was so unfortunate. The app constantly crashes and doesn’t show search results. The whole search process is complicated and exhausting. Just one big, long list makes it very difficult and numbing when trying to find something new to read. On top of all of this, the worst part is the integration with Kindle. It feels clunky and not comic-oriented to use the kindle reader and getting rid of the ability to view a preview directly in the description (without having to download it) is extremely disappointing.

I’m not usually this guy, but bring back the old version. You cornered the market and then burned it to the ground with this update.

HORRIFIC Update!

This is the first time I have ever said this: I DESPISE the latest version of the app! The previous layout had a ton of links to work through, yes, but it was arranged in a workable layout that made each section easily navigable and I could check the latest releases of single issues by a particular publisher with ease. All I wanted was a way to see an Unread status of titles from the browsing window without having to attempt a download for every single issue in a series, but Comixology made that impossible! I cannot even see the Completed status of titles I wish to return when Borrowing. Finding the latest issues of Archie titles, for example, was an additional challenge, when it would have been a matter of ease before.

In short, this update was not wanted, and makes usability VASTLY more difficult.

4.0 update ruins it

Comixology used to have a darn good app. The library was easy to use, the store did a good job of highlighting comics and the reading interface was really good. Since version 4.0 the library is more like Kindles, which isn’t as well suited to comics. The store doesn’t seem to have near as much. But far and away the worst is the new reading view. Zoom doesn’t work. Guided view only partially works. In a lot of comics the panel view only zooms very slightly making it barely better than nothing. Landscape mode is horrible. The page is fit to the screen vertically making it tiny. And guided view doesn’t expand to fill the screen. Several of my comics show up sideways. I’ve got to lock the screen rotation in the OS and the turn the screen to read those. Even then I’ve got to remember to swipe up and down instead of left and right. I can’t believe they ever even tested this,it’s just awful. Prior to the update this was a 5 star app

I have a very specific problem

This app used to work great. Then the update happened. Now I get a constant “this item is not compatible with this device” message but have no way to get rid of it or find out what is causing it. It happens every time I open the app. Oh and if I was reading a book then closed the app without backing out to my library first then open the app again, I get the message and then the whole thing freezes while stuck on the title page of the last book I read and I can’t do a thing. I have to uninstall and reinstall just to get it to open properly. If this one very specific problem gets fixed then I’ll be happy with it again.

Huge step back

The previous version was quite good and did everything I wanted from a comics reader app. The smart lists put things where I wanted them, and made browsing my library very easy. This new version has really cut that back, making browsing more difficult, and not being clear about what's actually downloaded and what's not. The actual reader view is mostly unchanged, which is good, but for something intended to manage weekly periodicals, this is really not great. Amazon's integration of Comixology has been largely botched and would have been better simply leaving it as it was.

Making it harder to enjoy comics.

It might be overkill to give the app 1 star, but it cannot be stressed just how much worse the new version of this app is over the previous one. Everything that was simple and easy is now cumbersome and complicated. Features that just worked before (syncing between devices, remembering what you’ve read/what you haven’t read yet, etc) just don’t anymore. Organization is a nightmare. The old version wasn’t perfect, but it was at least specifically designed for comic book reading, and most importantly of all it just worked. This was the equivalent of seeing a perfectly functional car, and deciding that the best way to improve it was to break all the windows
