Love it BUT

I’ve loved this app for my existing cookbooks. Being able to search all your recipes at one time, and by ingredient, has helped me utilize my cookbooks more. But I have found a flaw- they don’t automatically have new cookbooks. I’ve purchased 3 new releases and none of them are in the library. You can request to have them added, but they add based on number of request and you don’t get a timeframe. That’s a pretty big issue if you continue to buy new cookbooks to add to your collection!

Too Limited

The free version is so limited it’s useless. I downloaded and signed up all excited then immediately deleted it. You can only scan in five books with the free version. I wish they had been up front that “in-app purchases” actually means a pretty necessary subscription.

So much for that

Some caveats. They do not mention where I could see it this BUT The CookShelf app does not display full recipes or step-by-step methods, nor does it show exact ingredient amounts, to avoid copyright infringement. YOU GET AN INGREDIENT LIST ONLY.

Some cookbooks in which I am interested are not present in the app. Disappointing because that means they cannot be searched. You can ask they be scanned, but that is no guarantee. Get the app only to search for that situation before buying into a subscription. Sad.

Great but doesn’t support family sharing

Everyone in my family cooks and shares our cookbooks. I wish the app subscription could be shared too - the price isn’t justified to multiply by 3-4x

Good so far

I just got this app and am enjoying it so far—but I wish more of the “feed” was people making recipes from the books I have scanned instead of just one! Not sure if there is a way to only show these or not, but kg would be lovely!

Used to be better

The Home Screen used to give you a varied suggestion of recipes from books you owned which i really liked. Now they’ve changed it to turn it into another form of social media where it just ends up plastered with “community” (aka strangers) recipes. You get less varied recipes/cook books and it’s really not what I subscribed for.

It still gets 3 stars because the ingredient search function across books is really useful but I hope they implement a feature that allows you to opt out the community/social part & return to the previous Home Screen.

Pay to use the books I own

For a subscription service I have access to all the recipes on my book shelf. In the 30 seconds that I navigated the app I looked to see if I could find my way into a new book. It was difficult and clunky and I have a lot easier time searching through book stores than I do this service. It appears that they are attempting to create some sort of community by offering a social media aspect to their platform. I’m really not interested in anything related to this than discovering new cookbooks and it didn’t do the job for me, plus I’d never pay to have a worse experience with a written recipe

So many of my vegan/vegetarian cookbooks are not available!!

I love the whole concept of this app, and it’s why I got it. I wanted to downsize my huge vegan/vegetarian cookbook library. Alas, so many of my books are not in Cookshelf’s system. So what do I do with these perfectly good and useful cook books? Please include more, or give me notifications for when they are available.

Back to the books!

I have always loved my cookbooks. I made a reference binder about 25-30 years ago that would list the cookbook, page number, and what I liked about the recipe.
This is so much better! Now I can find recipes I would like to try, using ingredients I already have on hand. It is so much quicker than going through them all.
I love this app! They recently updated the user interface and it’s even more inviting now!
If you’re a cookbook collector or even have a lot of cookbooks, this is the best app to have to enjoy them. 🤗

My FAVORITE favorite app

Listen, I have a bit of a cookbook collecting problem that I do not intend to change… like, ever. This app is brilliant for helping me use and enjoy my cookbooks more than ever before. I love it!

Some apps should not be subscription based — Too greedy

It’s a good concept, I’m in the middle of cataloging my own cook books on Notion and it’s such a tedious process. I would happily purchase this app for a $5-10 one time fee but no way a monthly subscription. You could have had my money but got too greedy.

Hate new update

I loved the app when I first got it; I could search my own cookbooks and the app recommended recipes from my books. Now the app has expanded the social aspect of it and I see recipes from others and their cookbooks. I just wanted a way to see what I had and nothing more. Not everything needs a social component to it.

The best

I’ve been an eat your books member for years and this app is a game changer. Love being able to search my cookbooks and love the new home page that highlights recipes from my cookbooks that others have made and what they thought!

The best!

I have hundreds of cookbooks I never used!! Now I find myself using them again. Highly recommend!

Seemed like a great idea

After scanning all my books thinking it might almost be worth the (quite pricey) subscription, I did a general ingredient search ‘lamb’. I thought the search results seemed a bit sparse considering how many books I have and realised it didn’t even find them all. Not even close. Searched for something else that I know is in a few books and it returned ‘0 results’. Kind of a waste of time😔
Even the results returned only give required ingredients and not actual amounts of so not very helpful if I was using it whilst out to buy what I’d need.

Love love love!

This app has me even more excited to use my cookbook library then ever before! With so many recipes popping up that I may have forgotten about its pure inspiration every time I open up the app!

Need to Index More

I enjoy this app; it’s especially good for plugging in whatever you’re looking to use from the fridge. But there are too many cookbooks which haven’t been index yet. Also, they should set up some kind of email notification when one of your cookbooks has been indexed.

Love my Cookbooks Again!!

I have over 70 cookbooks. And if I want to do something with a boneless pork chop, it would take forever to go thru them all. Easier to just surf the web and find something.

Now I can put that boneless pork chop in the search bar and they will tell me what recipes, what book, what page number to find what I want.

My cookbooks are again being used as I had done years before the internet was just a wee little thing, when we only had cookbooks and recipe cards to go to!

Response from developer

Thanks so much for sharing! Reconnecting people with their cookbooks is exactly what our goal is ♥️

Absolutely obsessed

I typically don’t have any paid apps. But this one is definitely worth it. It is breathing new life into my massive cookbook collection, and really helping me find joy in them again, rather than letting them gather dust. I’ve had it about a week and already cooked 4 recipes from my books.
