About
Universe size comparison in 3D: see how big planets, stars, black holes and galaxies really are, side by side at true scale.
Cosmic Scale lines up 77 objects from smallest to largest, from a 490-metre asteroid to the Oort Cloud, and 137 with the Beyond pack of galaxies, nebulae and the largest structures in the cosmos. Then fly from a tiny asteroid to the edge of the observable universe.
COMPARE ANY TWO
"The Sun is 109× wider than Earth. About 1.3 million Earths would fit inside it." Pick any two objects and see them side by side at real scale, or make My list of 2 to 6 and line them up.
30 SPACE SIMULATIONS
Cosmic Scale is also a space simulator. 19 simulations show what really happens in space, with real numbers: a pulsar, Earth's magnetic shield, the Sun's death, a black hole tearing a star apart, two kinds of supernova, black holes born and merging, neutron stars colliding, a magnetar flare, a quasar, gravitational lensing, GRB 221009A, comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 hitting Jupiter, the asteroid that ended the dinosaurs, how a star is born, S301 racing round our galaxy's black hole, the Milky Way meeting Andromeda and the Big Bang. Anything no eye could see is drawn and labelled as drawn.
WHAT IF
11 stories follow the theory where no one has looked: the Sun as a black hole, vacuum decay, a world without the Moon, wormholes, warp drive, falling into a black hole and more.
AS YOU'D SEE IT
Many simulations also play as a short film of only the light your eyes would catch, in true colours.
SKY: WHAT IS ABOVE YOU TONIGHT
See tonight's Moon and bright planets, plus the eclipses and meteor showers coming up. Get a note the evening before something worth looking up for, and add your location if you like to see which eclipses you can see.
THE TOUR
Press play and fly from an asteroid past moons, planets, stars and black holes out to the observable universe, and see where we are at each layer we live inside.
INSPECT ANYTHING IN 3D
Turn any object with your finger: tilt Saturn's rings, spin a galaxy edge-on, look down onto a black hole's glowing disk, and share a picture. Try the new Realistic look.
EARTH, DOWN TO THE GROUND
Zoom in on Earth and Cosmic Scale carries on in Apple Maps satellite imagery over the same spot.
REAL MAPS, PHOTOS AND SOUNDS
Planets and moons wear real maps from NASA missions. Open any object for real, credited photographs, and listen to the wind on Mars, lightning on Jupiter and black holes turned into sound.
EVERY DAY
An object of the day, also on your Home Screen as a widget, a daily streak with optional reminders, and the Playground, where you build your own system and watch gravity decide.
FREE, WITH OPTIONAL VIDEOS
Every simulation and What if story opens for 24 hours with one short video, and so do the Beyond pack and Ultra graphics. Ads appear only at natural breaks, never inside a simulation.
COSMIC SCALE PRO
No ads, ever, and everything open at once: all 137 objects, every simulation and film, and Ultra graphics. $19.99 a year (7 days free for new subscribers), $2.99 a month, or $29.99 once for life. Subscriptions renew automatically until you cancel at least 24 hours before the period ends, in your App Store account settings; payment is charged to your Apple Account at confirmation. No sign-up needed: Pro stays with your Apple Account, on any iPhone signed in to it.
Sizes come from NASA/JPL fact sheets and published measurements. For black holes the size shown is the event horizon. Available in 15 languages.
