The below response is complete garbage. It’s an app designed to make using dating apps safer but doesn’t want to access the actual dating apps themselves??? They just want to learn human behavior…from your contacts? This response throws more red flags than no response at all. The response shows the app is straight up data mining you.

*ORIGINAL RESPONSE* The contacts access is requested so that users have a seamless experience and to gain insights into human behavior by linking assessment data. The data is not sold to anyone, but it will be used to gain better insights into human behavior and patterns of behavior. We do not access dating apps or other social media to generate our score because that method would not provide accurate data. People use impression management online to ensure they hide their red flags. I can promise you that the data I/we collect is not being used for bad purposes. The whole point is to make dating safer, which does require analyzing what kinds of red flags are most reported, if the red flags are consistent between dating partners, etc. You really shouldn’t assume the worst about us, the app was created to save lives and have a meaningful impact on dating safety. To be able to improve the product we need to understand both how it’s used and if it is revealing insights into behavior. Thanks for giving the app a try! *UPDATED RESPONSE* As for connecting to dating apps, the goal some day is to integrate with the dating apps somehow. But currently, the dating app profiles would not provide the kind of insight that would be valuable. People do impression management in their dating profiles and social media. The true way to know what someone is like is through their behavior not the way they post online. As for the phone number issue… The way to gain deeper insights is through overlaying data of multiple people’s experience dating the same person. The only way to do that is to be able to link those people, which would be next to impossible from a “linking data” standpoint without it being tied to phone numbers. Just because Cray plans to use the data to gain insights doesn’t mean it’s for nefarious reasons. For example, what if the same 4 red flags are reported consistently on the same person but another 10 vary greatly. That’s going to be helpful so that we can reorder the questions to be more responsive to real threats. It can also drive educational material we put out through our social media dating education campaigns. I already have begun using both terms and scenarios to educate our customers, the plan is to keep providing more and more help so that people improve their own dating experience, and possibly their dating partners as well.

I’m really sorry for the bad experience, I’ve been trying to fix the app since January. Unfortunately Apple is refusing to let us update the app for the past two months. The in apps have been cut off by them and we have been working to update the app. In the meantime we are also building a web version of the app so that this won’t be an issue in the future, plus we can add some additional functionality. We are definitely not a scam, but I can definitely understand why it would seem that way since the app hasn’t been functioning. I’m hoping Apple will approve one of these submissions soon. The transactions should not be getting charged to your account. If you have been wrongfully charged please send proof to info@cray.app
IMHO, from a DV survivor.
I get where you’re going w it, but from a survivor who’s educated herself extensively, this is exactly what it will do to them personally, and will be easily DARVO’d by the abuser.

It sounds like your situation was a lot to deal with, I’m glad you made it out of it alive. I wish the app were around back the to be able to help you exit that relationship sooner. That being said, 2/5 stars feels a bit harsh over you disagreeing with the name of the app.

We do provide a service - after you completed a CrayScore or SchemerScore it provides you with a free report. These reports both identify the red flags and provide guidance to the user - at no cost. Any information we ask for is used to help provide the service to you. The contact record is used for usability consistency or if the in apps are purchased. We do not give away any information of our users. This is a safety app not Facebook.

That is just not true. It asks for access to contacts for usability purposes and gives the option to only import a single contact at a time if you would like. Not sure why you’d leave such a dishonest review.
