About

Learn colour by playing with it. Colour Studio helps design students, educators and curious makers discover how colour behaves. Arrange coloured papers, explore visual illusions and solve design challenges that turn colour theory into something you can see and use. PLAY YOUR WAY THROUGH COLOUR Explore 12 missions across three creative rooms: The sorting room: arrange papers by lightness and colour intensity. The illusion room: change the surroundings and discover how a colour's appearance can shift. The print room: choose colour combinations that make poster text readable. Each completed mission adds a composition to your personal exhibition. Experiment at your own pace, with hints, undo and opportunities to try again. There are no timers or lives to lose. BUILD YOUR UNDERSTANDING Follow a guided journey through eight connected areas: perception, the nature of colour, human vision, colour attributes, colour relationships, colour interaction, meaning in design, and screen to print. Explore light and surfaces, hue, lightness and chroma, additive and subtractive colour, harmony, simultaneous contrast and cultural context. Visit the open Studio to revisit an idea or try an experiment independently. Short review cards return over the following days to help ideas stick. NEW: FROM SCREEN TO PRINT Your screen is not the standard. Predict which colours survive a printing press, see how paper changes ink, and watch two samples that match in daylight part ways under a warm lamp. Learn how tolerance and physical references settle colour decisions, then complete a practical brief that ends in a colour specification. STYLE AND SPECIFY Use the Palette Stylist to give four papers a role and try them on a poster, packaging, a textile, a room and an app screen. Preview in greyscale, a colour-blindness simulation or as a print estimate. Then turn any palette into a colour specification, a shareable sheet and a printable test page. LOOK IT UP The new Colour Dictionary explains 54 colour terms in plain language and links each one to the exercise where you can see it. Every paper in the box has its own reference page with its values, contrast and print estimate. PUT THEORY INTO PRACTICE Apply what you discover through colour-mixing activities, camera experiments, contrast challenges and design briefs. Save studies, palettes and reflections in your Notebook, then share selected work for discussion or critique. FOR EDUCATORS An optional classroom pilot lets a class take short checks before and after the print module. Results stay on each device and are shared only when a student chooses to share them. OBSERVE, COMPARE, DISCOVER Colour Studio encourages careful looking and personal observation. Feedback helps explain the relationships behind your choices, while recognising that displays, viewing conditions and individual perception can vary. Print and lighting previews are teaching estimates, not proofs. Clear typography, quiet layouts and plenty of space for your colour experiments, with support for larger text and reduced motion. Build your eye for colour, one discovery at a time.

What's New in Crit_ColourStudio

2.0 Build 14

October 3, 2026

Colour Studio 2.0 takes your palette off the screen. NEW Screen to Print: a new eighth phase. Predict which colours survive a printing press, see how paper changes ink, watch two matching samples part ways under a warm lamp, and learn what a colour tolerance means. Practical brief: turn a café's social media palette into a colour specification for printed menus. Palette Stylist: give four papers a role and try them on a poster, packaging, a textile, a room and an app screen, with greyscale, colour-blindness and print previews. Colour specifications: share a specification sheet, or print a test page to compare your own printer with your screen. Colour Dictionary: a new tab with 54 colour terms and a reference page for every paper. Review cards: short questions that come back over the following days to help ideas stick. Classroom pilot: an optional, private mode for educators running a class study. IMPROVED The learning journey now has eight phases. Your progress carries over, and Screen to Print appears as your next step. The Notebook now keeps palettes and specifications. Your work stays on your device.
