Why Charge for Something So Basic?
I’ve been using Crochet Counter for a while now, and I’m really disappointed with the recent changes. This app used to be free, which was great for something as simple as a crochet counter. Now, suddenly, there’s a paywall, and I’m struggling to see what’s changed to justify it. The updates they mention seem minimal, and honestly, it feels like an excuse to start charging.
For something as basic as tracking crochet rows, there are plenty of alternatives that don’t cost a dime. I don’t mind paying for extra features, but to charge for something as simple as this just doesn’t make sense. It’s even more frustrating for those of us who’ve been loyal users since the beginning. The app needs to offer a free option—at least for one project at a time. Charging for a core function that’s available elsewhere for free feels like a huge step backward.
I get that maintaining an app takes resources, but this feels like a money grab rather than an improvement. I’m really not happy with how this has been handled.

Was great, now you have to pay for a counter. There’s no skip option so you either pay for a basic counter or just do it yourself and don’t waste money. All of my projects I’ve saved are gone now and I’m honestly really upset.
*sad face*
this was great.. loved it for what it was, a simple row/stitch counter.. glad i found out in time (only 5 days left) to be able to write down my counters before they disappeared (yes, i kept using the app without knowing there was an update, until today that i went through the apps that needed to be updated).. thank you, crochet counter! ❤️❤️🩹

What about the legacy users??
As a noob to the wonderful world of yarn over a year ago, I needed something simple and easy to use. I tried several of the other apps with counters, and this one just worked for me. It was not just the fact that it was free, but it also worked mentally for me.
I noticed the update but didn’t think twice about it until I came in to use it over the weekend, and now we have a paywall. I am disappointed by this change. I understand that the team offered the full app for the last two years, but three months to use the site for free is a nice gesture but…
I have projects that can eat that time for breakfast still want for more. I am not sure if the team considered offering something like allowing the legacy users to keep the counter for free but adding the paywall to other features and a paywall for everything to the newcomers. The name of the app is Crochet Counter, after all.
In conclusion, I am a maker as a hobby that doesn't sell what I created so the paywall is an issue for me no matter the cost. Free worked for me and if I used the other parts of the app and was selling I could see potentially paying towards a subscription. I hope the team takes the thoughts of legacy users into consideration. At this time I am with those who will need to figure out another method to track my work once I lose access to my counters.

Update
I was using this counter which was free. Literally had rows counted in this app. Had to take a break from a project and returned to find that the app was updated and my row count is GONE!! That is a lousy way to do business. So beware.
