Why Charge for Something So Basic?

I’ve been using Crochet Counter for a while now, and I’m really disappointed with the recent changes. This app used to be free, which was great for something as simple as a crochet counter. Now, suddenly, there’s a paywall, and I’m struggling to see what’s changed to justify it. The updates they mention seem minimal, and honestly, it feels like an excuse to start charging.
For something as basic as tracking crochet rows, there are plenty of alternatives that don’t cost a dime. I don’t mind paying for extra features, but to charge for something as simple as this just doesn’t make sense. It’s even more frustrating for those of us who’ve been loyal users since the beginning. The app needs to offer a free option—at least for one project at a time. Charging for a core function that’s available elsewhere for free feels like a huge step backward.
I get that maintaining an app takes resources, but this feels like a money grab rather than an improvement. I’m really not happy with how this has been handled.

Was great, now you have to pay for a counter. There’s no skip option so you either pay for a basic counter or just do it yourself and don’t waste money. All of my projects I’ve saved are gone now and I’m honestly really upset.

Response from developer

We are sorry to hear your are upset. The counter part continued to be free to all the existing users which had the app installed previous to the update. On the paywall, there is a SKIP button in the upper right corner. If you still can't access your counters please send us an email at support@littlebitofuniverse.com and we can sort out the issue. Thank you

*sad face*

this was great.. loved it for what it was, a simple row/stitch counter.. glad i found out in time (only 5 days left) to be able to write down my counters before they disappeared (yes, i kept using the app without knowing there was an update, until today that i went through the apps that needed to be updated).. thank you, crochet counter! ❤️❤️‍🩹

Hi Ramona, We are sorry the "5 days left" was confusing. Since you had the app installed previous to this update, you are a "Legacy user" and will continue to have access to the counters part of the app. Only the other screens will lock after 5 days, but it should not impact your counters. If this is not the case, please send us an email on support@littlebitofuniverse.com, and we can sort out your account. Thank you.

What about the legacy users??

As a noob to the wonderful world of yarn over a year ago, I needed something simple and easy to use. I tried several of the other apps with counters, and this one just worked for me. It was not just the fact that it was free, but it also worked mentally for me.

I noticed the update but didn’t think twice about it until I came in to use it over the weekend, and now we have a paywall. I am disappointed by this change. I understand that the team offered the full app for the last two years, but three months to use the site for free is a nice gesture but…

I have projects that can eat that time for breakfast still want for more. I am not sure if the team considered offering something like allowing the legacy users to keep the counter for free but adding the paywall to other features and a paywall for everything to the newcomers. The name of the app is Crochet Counter, after all.

In conclusion, I am a maker as a hobby that doesn't sell what I created so the paywall is an issue for me no matter the cost. Free worked for me and if I used the other parts of the app and was selling I could see potentially paying towards a subscription. I hope the team takes the thoughts of legacy users into consideration. At this time I am with those who will need to figure out another method to track my work once I lose access to my counters.

Update

I was using this counter which was free. Literally had rows counted in this app. Had to take a break from a project and returned to find that the app was updated and my row count is GONE!! That is a lousy way to do business. So beware.

Response from developer

Hello, thanks for reaching out! Please create an account, and you should see all your previous counters restored (as long as the app is still installed). All existing users can skip the paywall and use the app for free for 3 months. We are sorry for any inconvenience. If you experience any further issues, please email us at support@littlebitofuniverse.com. We really appreciate you being part of the Crochet Counter family! 🧶

it was PERFECT :(

I loved this app, you could have as many counters as you need and it was super simple for a beginner like me. Then i open the app one day and it tells me i have 3 days before I have to pay for the app. The app was perfect, i don’t know why they felt the need to change it :/

Thank you for sharing your thoughts. We truly appreciate your support and are glad you've enjoyed the app. We understand that changes like this can be disappointing, and we want to be as transparent as possible. For the past two years, the app has been completely free, but unfortunately, we can no longer afford to keep it running at no cost, as we also have ongoing expenses to maintain and improve it. To make the transition smoother, we provided a FREE 3-month period for existing users to continue using the original features, and there is also a SKIP BUTTON on the paywall. Our goal has always been to offer a valuable and well-maintained tool for crocheters, and we've worked hard to improve the app based on user feedback while keeping the subscription as affordable as possible at just $1.99. We truly hope you'll continue using the app, and we're always open to suggestions on how we can enhance your experience. Thank you for understanding, and for your review. Have a great day!

Very disappointed

It was a great app but why did you change it to now charge a monthly fee for features I do not want or need. Why not continue the old version and allow us to choose if we want to pay for added features. So disappointing!

no longer simple and free

i loved this app because it was simple and free. it had one function and that’s all i wanted! i’m sorry but a subscription for a row counter? you’re out of your mind lol. i’ll count rows myself before i pay a monthly fee for that. it would have been one thing if you included banner ads to help fund it, but everything is turning into a subscription model now! people are tired of it. i sympathize with the developers as someone who has a degree in computer science, i get it. but when will y’all learn that people are TIRED of the subscriptions?!?! a dang tv remote app i used for months just turned to that model as well. it’s ridiculous, and id much rather not be lazy and get up and grab the tv remote, do 20 jumping jacks and sit back down before i pay for an app like that. it’s no different for this app too. whatever its up to y’all tho if you guys want to screw over the people that use your app, be my guest. another one will just appear on the market in your place anyway!

We’re really sorry to hear that you’re disappointed, and we completely understand where you're coming from. Crochet Counter was free for over two years, and during that time we’ve worked hard to improve it based on feedback from users like you. The recent update introduces new features and improvements, but we’ve made sure that the core functionality remains free for 3 months to allow a smooth transition. The paywall can be skipped, and all of your previous counters are still available. We didn’t take this decision lightly, maintaining and developing the app takes time, care, and resources, and we want to ensure its long-term future while continuing to add features users have requested. We truly value your support and thank you for being part of the Crochet Counter community.

Subscription Model?

I know that running an app isn't free, but I don't really understand why anyone would pay for a subscription to a stitch counter. If I wanted to spend money, I would just purchase a row/stitch counter that I can own forever rather than pay a subscription to an app that can disappear or change prices at any time. In fact, that's probably what I will end up doing. Makes no sense to me.

My passion is worth the cost of a pizza

I've used it for over one year. Now they've enhanced the app for creators. I'm fine paying a pizza to make my hobby easier.

Not free anymore

I don’t like the new update, I loved the simplicity of the app before the update. Time to look for a FREE app again!

Disappointed

This app was honestly perfect before it was monetized. Super disappointed to see that now it requires a subscription to add features that aren’t necessary. If they wanted to completely change the app & how it functions.. make a new one. No longer recommend.

New update leaves mixed feelings

I’ve had the app for a while and it was a solid free crochet tracking app….the only thing that needed fixing was being able to reset the stitch count without resting the rows…this new update makes me really disappointed because it now requires a monthly paid subscription but still didn’t fix the stitch reset issue many people had…i don’t need a fancy app with a bunch of gadgets I liked it being a simple tracker that got rid of my notebook usage…

Not a fan of the subscription model

I really liked the simplicity of the app, but the new updates force you to pay a subscription. I rather keep the free version.

If you could just allow a free version with just stitch/row counting per project and let people subscribe to get the updated features, I’d certainly change me review to 5.

Hate the update

Was so happy with the original app. It was perfect. I relied on it with every project I did. Now it’s completely ruined. 5 stars for original app, 0 now.

Great app

I’ve tried many apps and websites, but this one is on another level. It does exactly what it’s supposed to—simple UX/UI, fast, and beautifully designed.

Disappointed in the update

I loved this app for exactly what it was - a basic counter app that would let me have multiple counts at a time. I am disappointed that they’ve decided to change it by adding a bunch of other features and turning it into a subscription service. It’s no longer what I was looking for.

IT WAS free but became*subscription only*

The original free, simple to use crochet stitch counter app I was obsessed with turned into something with “bells and whistles” and locked behind a pay-wall. The fact that I deleted my original, 5 star review (for the free version) of this app and changed it to a 1 star review should tell you all you really need to know.

IMO, Best Free Simple Crochet Counter

I wanted a Crochet Counter app for rows and stitches. That’s it. No timers, categories, graphs/charts, patterns, subscriptions/one-time payments, ads, hints/tips, complicated/unnecessary settings options, accounts, nothing. I *literally* wanted an easy to use counter on my screen which I could easily add/decrease the numbers. When I’m crocheting, I don’t need to be looking at a screen with endless distractions. What you see in the screenshots is what you get. A counter of rows/stitches. If you are looking for anything more than that, then this app may not be for you. But for those who just need a free, simple, easy to use counter (in my opinion) this app is it.
