About
Cad é an scéal? Daily Scéal turns today's news into a daily bit of Irish practice.
Every morning the day's stories land with Irish words woven into the English, sorted into Inniu, Éire, Spórt, Domhan and Eile. Pick your level, from a few key nouns to about half the story as Gaeilge, and read at a pace that suits you. Tap any blue word to see what it means. New to Irish? Turn on category translations in Faoi to see each Irish category in English too.
BEARNAÍ (GAP FILL)
Ten quick questions from the day's news: a sentence with one word missing and the English as your clue. Put the right Irish word back.
FOCAIL (YOUR WORDS)
Tap the green heart and a word goes straight into your own word list, along with the sentence it came from. Practise them with flashcards: get a word right and a dot fills in, one a day. Four dots and it's learned.
FOCAL AN LAE AND SCÉAL AN LAE
A hand-checked Irish word every day on your home screen and lock screen, with a heart to save it, and as an optional reminder at noon. Scéal an lae puts the day's top story on your home screen too, and Ceist an lae asks a question from the news each day, answered right on the widget.
SHARE
Share a word or a story as a card, or make a Focail na seachtaine card from the words you saved this week.
READ OFFLINE
The last seven days of stories are kept on your phone, so a plane, a train or a dead spot won't stop you.
PRACTICE YOU CAN TRUST
Most words in the stories come from a hand-checked dictionary, and the rest are machine translated so the news can go out every morning. The gap fill game, flashcards and Focal an lae only ever use the hand-checked words.
Free and ad-free, with nothing to sign up for. Everything stays on your phone.
Headlines and summaries from RTÉ News, with a link to every full story on rte.ie.
Made with grá for the Irish language.

1.3.0

Two new widgets: Scéal an lae puts the day's top story on your home screen, and Ceist an lae asks one question from the news each day, answered right on the widget. The Focal an lae widget has a heart, so you can save the word without opening the app. Share a word or a story as a card, or make a Focail na seachtaine card from your week's words. Long-press the app icon to jump to today's stories, flashcards or gap fill, and find your saved words in iPhone search.
