Great enhancement

I’ve had the SRS for over a year now. The WiFi switch is definitely an improvement — no more visible cord and setup feels cleaner overall. The old firmware update process used to be a bit of a pain, so I’m happy that part is simpler now.

Dropped features

The new firmware and application flow simply drop the dynamic brightness feature of the sensor. No warning. It got also erased from the documentation. I regret upgrading. Email collection practices are pretty aggressive as well. The app will not let you proceed to setting up the device you already own until you provide an email for a mailing list. Oh, and the older page with manual firmware download is now removed from public access, so the app is the only way. I’m very disappointed. My SRS-2 is going into trash.

Response from developer

Hi there — thank you for taking the time to share such detailed feedback. We completely understand how frustrating this experience must feel, especially when something you relied on has changed. For both you and all users, we want to clarify what’s behind these updates, as they are closely tied to Samsung’s platform evolution rather than a decision to remove functionality arbitrarily. Beginning in 2025, Samsung discontinued support for the EX-Link (RS-232) connection, which was the legacy wired method used for features like dynamic brightness. Because Samsung TV firmware cannot be downgraded, maintaining compatibility requires us to transition fully to their newer secure, WiFi-based communication system. We work closely with Samsung and their engineering team through our collaborative partnership, and a big part of that relationship is sharing real-world customer feedback on how people use their TVs every day. This helps shape future feature development — including newer capabilities like expanded Art Mode controls, which are only accessible through this newer wireless framework. While this transition means some legacy features (like EX-Link-based dynamic brightness previously ONLY available in TV watching mode and not in Art Mode) are not currently supported in the same way, it also unlocks a much more powerful and flexible foundation moving forward to further enhance your user experience. From both a functionality and design perspective, this shift is a major step forward: * No more visible cable — the sensor no longer needs to be tethered to the TV, which aligns much better with the clean, art-focused aesthetic of Samsung’s The Frame and similar models * True wireless placement — the device can now be positioned anywhere in the room for optimal performance * Direct WiFi connectivity — your device stays connected to your home network, allowing it to automatically receive the latest updates and features as Samsung releases them “Set it and forget it” updates — no more manual firmware downloads, file transfers, or connecting to temporary networks (which many users found confusing and time-consuming) Previously, updating required downloading firmware files, storing them locally, and manually uploading them through a private network — a process that often led to support challenges. The new system is designed to be seamless and automatic. Regarding the email step — we understand your concern. The intent is not to be intrusive, but to improve your experience by: * Allowing us to quickly identify your device and software version for faster support * Enabling important notifications about new features and improvements * Helping us better support customers as Samsung continues to evolve their platform We also appreciate your feedback about documentation and will take that into account as we continue improving clarity around these transitions. We truly value your input — it plays an important role in shaping how we move forward. If you’re open to it, our support team would be happy to work with you directly to help you get the most out of the new system. — The Deco Team
