Room for improvement

The concept of the app is great and the CGM experience is life changing for diabetics. But the alarm system is so poor. Firstly, there is no critical alert system, meaning that the alerts will not override any phone settings. This is such an oversight. Libre system can do it, fall alerts can do it, there is no reason why this shouldn’t be a feature. Additionally the chime for a high glucose alert is too short - irrespective of which audio you set it to. It doesn’t alert for long enough to interrupt sleep or be heard through the bustle of busy life. There needs to be an option to extend the length of the chime. Finally, the low glucose alarm alert, whilst it does ring for long enough to alert you, it is very inconsistent. I’ve experienced the alert where it’s said I’m low, I’ve handled it, but then 1 hour later, I’ve gone back to check, but it’s fallen even lower and not re alerted or I just don’t get an alert. For a system which takes 2 hours to calibrate, I would expect more accuracy within the system.

A quand Dexcom Follow

Dexcom trial

I decided to give Dexcom a try as my Libre’s weren’t sticking to me. And although some things about the Dexcom are bit better. Like comfort. The app falls short. I cannot shut the app and have it do its thing in the background which at night I shut the app out of habit and lose a whole nights readings. Like who leaves apps open? We close them to save battery and this has to stay open. Which to me a really let down and annoyance. Also the time in target cannot be changed I liked to be a bit harder on myself and make the green smaller as imo 10 is a litttle high. But on Dexcom you cannot change that either. I at this moment in time will not make the swap because the app is letting it down imo!

Works well

Works well despite all the poor reviews which I cannot understand.
It occasionally loses contact with the iPhone, usually a distance issue and nothing to do with the technology.
It does require recalibrating every few days, but is seldom far out. The advice to recheck an alarm reading with a blood test is sensible.
The only thing missing for me is to be able to see my blood sugar reading on my Apple Watch which would be very useful.
With the release of the ONE+ I hope the basic ONE remains available for a long time yet.

Game changer.

Been using the Dexcom One for about 6 months now, so feel that’s long enough to give a review. Have to say, I have had very few problems with the system, with Apple Health connection turned on (using iPhone 14 Pro if that matters to anyone). Let’s be honest, if you want the bells and whistles of the G6 or G7, then buy those as the One doesn’t have them. What it does have is accurate, stable recording, I personally still use a manual meter at least once a day, as advised by the nurse, just to compare, as I have found that placing of CGM’s and knocks can affect the readings, and each meter is slightly different. However, that is environmental and doesn’t reflect on the app. I have had very few issues with disconnections and I swim for at least 2 hours a week, the app reconnects quickly when back in range of my phone. The alerts are loud.. good! And I use the iPhone focus so that I can still get urgent notifications rather than just muting, so that mute is for proper quiet times (like the cinema). Let’s be honest, it would be nice to have some of the other features, and I would like an iWatch app, so I could have it paired to both and get alerts while exercising. Honestly, if you are reading all the old bad reviews, like I did, before getting it, I would say give it a try, as my issues have been minimal (and mostly caused by myself!) and it has really, truly let me understand where my sugar levels are going at any point in time.

Unreliable

I’ve been using the LibreLink app/sensor for over a year and was given the option of ‘trying out’ Dexcom to see if it would be better. Unfortunately it’s not.
1. It’s more fiddly - you have to attach the Sensor to your skin first, then you have to attach a seperate Transmitter. LibreLink only has one attachment, which is also much smaller!
2. The sticky adhesive curled up and is impossible to uncurl, so when it was applied to my arm the adhesive wasn’t flat.
3. It only lasts 10 days, whereas LibreLink lasts 2 weeks.
4. Most importantly - the readings were inaccurate by up to 3 units. It kept telling me my sugars were between 2 & 4 (i.e. too low) but when I tested my levels on my manual machine they were showing as between 5 and 7. I swigged half a bottle of Lucozade on the first occasion before realising the reading was wrong.
5. The notifications are LOUD and all the notification sounds are like alarms i.e. annoying. It wasn’t possible to reduce the volume of the alarms unless i also turned down the phone ringer volume - not ideal!

In the end I binned it after less than a day of usage and I won’t go back.

Dexcom one vs Libre 2

Im not one to normally write reviews, but as a recently diagnosed T1 and getting these devices on the NHS I thought it necessary to let other diabetics know.

Having tried the freestyle libre 2 and the dexcom one through the NHS the libre 2 app is by FAR superior. The dexcom one app does not allow critical alerts to override silent modes (important if you put your phone on silent overnight) so you will not get a low alert overnight(the libre app does allow you to do this). The dexcom app also doesn't allow a loved one to ‘follow’ your readings or allow you to log carbs, insulin doses etc, all of which the libre 2 app does allow.

Its not like dexcom doesn’t have the capability to put this in their app (as they do it with the G7). I feel like dexcom will lose a lot of business with the NHS as a lot of patients will prefer the competition over the ‘one’ because of app limitations.

Hopefully someone at dexcom will feed this up the chain, because the g7 app is amazing, even just a couple of extra functions on the ‘one’ app will make it a go to CGM device/app combo for T1 diabetics getting their device via the NHS.

This app now works great - November 2023

I started with the app and CGM Dexcom one in June 2023 and to begin with it crashed very often. I found technical support and customer service to be excellent. They contacted me a day later to check all was still on after an issue was resolved.

After some independent research I discovered that it was Apple-Health app that I had agreed to share data with that was causing a problem. I could not switch off the ability to share so in the end I deleted Apple-Health. At this point all the problems went away and the app was stable and worked great. Furthermore I was able to link my Dexcom account to ‘Sugarmate’ app and use sugarmate for all the clever stats and recording what I ate/drank and other notes.

I can 100% recommend this app and more importantly the company having had 5 months experience now. I strongly recommend that this app is not linked to Apple health - stick with Sugarmate that is an approved partner of Dexcom. And yes - this app is helping me balance blood sugar and my metabolism is improving.

Big improvement since update

Please be aware that whilst I agree with all the older messages about previous frequent loss of connection and crashes, the most recent app update in the last few months had made a huge improvement to the reliability of this system and I am now experiencing very few problems. It has also added a calibration function previously missing.

Have been using Dexcom for a while as I prefer the continuous monitoring function without need to scan over the libre freestyle. I know there are better versions of both systems available but am using systems available on NHS prescription.
