Slicker Than A Wet Rock

After using a couple of other apps and websites, I knew there had to be something out there better, and I stumbled on DFTS. It’s simple and intuitive to use; the tiles at the top are so useful and helpful for finding deficiencies in your pack. Bravo.

Dialing in

This is great for dialing in my pack list, finding and zapping those extra ounces lurking unnoticed. As I age, I’ve lost a bit in my ability to carry heavy packs, as well as my ability to remember all my gear. This app helps in both regards. I hope for a few more years of backpacking to the high elevations that have the flyfishing of my dreams.

Great app getting better with more use!

I caught wind of this app from a Reddit post and gave it a download, as I’m getting back into backpacking after a couple decades away. It’s great for me for a couple reasons - 1) creating and optimizing virtual packs to not lose sight of the weights, 2) researching new gear from example pack outs of others, 3) making a checklist so I… don’t forget the spoon… or anything else.

Found this app via a thread on Backpacking Light. The author was super responsive, asking for feedback and graciously accepting criticism. I thought I'd just use the free version (and I could have) but I'm enjoying it so much I decided to upgrade just to support future development.

UNBELIEVABLE APP

I have always had the issue of forgetting gear I owned because it was tucked away in bins or just buried in a backpack for storage. This app allowed me to stay organized with what I own and what purpose it is for. The gear locker is my favorite for this. Building a backpack is so easy now. I just click what I want from my gear locker and put it in my bag which shows the total weight of the pack. GET THIS APP IF YOU ARE A GEAR JUNKY AND ARE NOT THE GREATEST AT ORGANIZATION!!!

Great app with lots of room to grow

Let me start out by saying I love this app. It is ver user friendly and easy to use. My fiancé and I recently used this app to help prepare for a backpacking trip.
It was awesome being able to have an easy visual for the weight we would have/save by swapping or adjusting gear. It made planning a breeze.
Then, when we packed our gear, the checklist or “packed” feature was super helpful in making sure we had all of our gear packed and ready.
There are a few small issues, mainly the tendency the app has to swap pounds and ounces. This has led to a couple of surprisingly heavy packs, but it’s an easy fix. The other issue is sometimes the updates you make to an item don’t save.
Overall though, I love the app, and am excited to keep using it. I highly recommend it!

In order to use the app you must sign in with Google or Facebook and the app will share your name email address and additional info

Sorry to hear you feel that way, but I am not sure you actually tried out the app. Facebook login has never been part of our app before. Additionally Apple login is an option and that is more secure then signing in with username and password. With Apple login there is an option to hide your email. Good App

Good app. Could be great. Almost there but not quite.
Item names don't auto capitalize No apparent way to reach out to dev directly , other than Reddit (no go) or a confusing community site.

As for auto capitalization, there are a few brands and items where the first letter are lower case (prAna, iPhone etc.) and wanted users to be able to type those brands or gear items names appropriately. As for reaching out directly, have you looked in the app settings? There is a contact section called "Stay in Touch". First option is email (mike@tendigitgrid.com) , reddit, Twitter, Discord, and lastly my blog. Excited to hear from you and hear any more thoughts you have on the app!

Die Idee ist gut, aber die App ist voller Fehler

Die Idee, seine Ausrüstung in einem virtuellen Schrank zu organisieren, ist echt gut. Leider gibt es viele Probleme. Beim Einfügen von Bilder muss man lange warten teilweise, ohne das man weiß, dass eventuell das Bild noch hochgeladen wird. Es passiert dann einfach nichts.
War eben fleißig am Anlegen von Gegenständen, plötzlich kann ich nichts mehr hinzufügen, trotz Pro Version.
Gut, dass ich nur das Jahresabo habe.
Die App ist aber auf jeden Fall ein Blick wert!

Best Mobile App For Hike Planning

I’ve used LighterPack for a while, but that and similar web based solutions are really only easily useful on a pc screen, and it gets really painful to do it on a phone. I’m too busy out hiking to wait until I get back to a pc screen to plan the next hike! The tracking of calories for food items is something I haven’t seen in other apps, and as food and clothing are the 2 things that everyone usually over packs, being able to track both in one app really helps, especially for newer hikers, or those wanting to get into ultralight hiking.

Useful app with clean and simple UI

Very user friendly and helpful! Will definitely make it easier to visualize what’s taking up weight, and help to address it. Oh yeah and it’s FREE with NO ADS?? Need I say more?!

An Essential App for People with Lots of Gear and Lots of Trips

There’s a lot of potential here, but being able to add metadata to gear items is sorely missing. Being able to add a custom line/property to a gear item (such as insulation R value, or rope tension rating, or purchase date, or down fill weight, or number of carabiners of this type, or clothing size, or many other essential properties) is not yet possible. Being able to add a custom “Pack Category” is currently possible, but u can’t customize the properties available to that category (which is currently very limited and universal for all items). You cannot add a /Sleeping Pad/ category that includes the properties of (R value, length, width, thickness, or anything else you might need to reference when planning a trip) in addition to weight. This is an essential and missing feature (I have the Pro version). The “lighter options available” suggestion provided by the app, is also not useful, as every item of gear is unique in what application it best serves, and that judgement can only be made by the user and the intended application to have value. Somebody soon is going to get this type of app right (in terms of features) and they will win the day. (There’s also bugs)

I really appreciate it, and love getting a view into how my different users use the app. I already have temperating rating pop up for things like sleeping bags and quilts etc. as extra fields related to the item type. R value is a great suggestion along with tension rating for climbing rope. I will add these to the todo list to add in a future update. Initial use - looks promising!

Found this app via Reddit and the developer had some great discussion/feedback, so I thought I would download it and try it out.

So far, everything has been really user-friendly, though my understanding is one can’t get import previously existing lists. Thankfully I didn’t have one so having to create a list was a useful exercise for me, not redundant.

While setting up my gear and pack, I discovered it could do everything I would want it to do, generally via a menu I hadn’t looked at yet.

My two thoughts for feedback thus far are:

1) an option to separate essential weight from base weight - I like to see what my bare essentials weigh (Eg pack, shelter, sleeping) separate from my total base weight (including accessories, clothing, electronics, etc)

2) when looking at the pack weight summary, it looks like some items are being filtered by names other than the Pack Category. For example, if I go to “Pack,” the items under “Pack” lists items like my “PackIt Gourmet Food; if I misspell PackIt then it gets excluded, making me thing it’s searching for items that say Pack, instead of items that are in the Pack Category “Pack.” Just makes things more cluttered visually, or worse, is double counting the weight.

Work in Progress already VERY useful!

Fairly new Backpacking gear list and weight app. (Would be useful to any folks who want to travel light) I’m already seeing ways to reduce weight and I haven’t even fully utilized the gear locker yet. The developer, M Jones, is updating it regularly and is very interested in user suggestions. I could easily see this becoming the premier pack list app. I decided to purchase an annual subscription to the “pro upgrade” not because I need it yet, but because I wanted to support the continued development of the app!
