Fantastic Game! Needs Landscape Mode.
Love this game so much! I just wish I had the option to play this in a landscape view. Kinda weird since the Final Fantasy games have a landscape perspective. Hope Square Enix takes this into consideration.

Excellent graphics, art style, and gameplay. One of the best and most engaging stories in a JRPG—action, suspense, mystery, tragedy, joy, whimsy, romance—an unforgettable adventure. Easily worth the price because of the dozens of hours you will pour into it.

Was excited to buy and try but…….
I’m still at the beginning, but three things are stopping me from continuing: there’s no controller support, the on-screen controls are awkward, and the game only supports horizontal play. I’m using an iPad, so holding it like that gets tiring fast. Please update the game—I really want to enjoy it, but the current control setup and required orientation make it difficult to keep playing.

Pretty decent
Great overall game, I’ve been playing dragon quest games since I was 9 years old but the story for this was probably one of the best. Worth it.

Where is the tradition Chinese
Chinese disappear after update, now I can only ise my old iphone to enjoy the game and must be very careful not to update the app. Please add Chinese again. please please. I think this is a hopeless hope. let see whether this comment will have someone to check and add back the Chinese.....(18/9/2025)

One of the best games on mobile
Dragon Quest is one of my favorite series, and DQ5 is easily one of its best entries. Please bring this game to modern consoles Square Enix

I am a big fan of dragon quest games and I love this one nearly as much as the original but I will say one thing that the beginning is very boring

Held back by the translation
DQV is a great game, and this version of DQV is very fun, but the English localization leaves a lot to be desired. Most character names have been butchered into out of place references and nearly every line is a pun or rendered in a phonetic accent with only a passing resemblance to human speech.
Some of the worst standouts include the changing of the names of every antagonist to Russian words for chess pieces, words the translator themself didn't seem to understand given they confused which pieces are "Ladja" and "Slon". These name changes are coupled with a pathetic attempt at a Slavic accent which will make you roll your eyes every time a villain speaks.
The translation effort seems more like a "so random" internet parody of the story and dialogue.

Portrait mode only
You will love this game if you are a portrait mode nutter. There is no support for landscape mode so you see less of the environment.

I love that this game is played vertically with decent touch controls. It seems to work really well.

Impossible!!
Awful!!! I cannot defeat the Bo’s that hit 239 damages to me and my allies which are under 225 HP. I am on level 24. I found out level 99 isn’t enough. It 510 HP. Still it is impossible. Unless, Square Enix re-develop to fix the app down to under 80 damages. I’ll never play it again!!! Otherwise, I will have to reach level 99 before I can beat that boss.

Great game but I can’t save to the cloud. It says connection failed when I tried to save using my iPhone 14 Pro.

Frustrating. Doesn't age well
It turns out, you really can't go back. These games require a ton of grinding that just isn't worth your time as an adult. As a kid with nothing better to do you don't remember it that way. But as an adult, if you're honest, this just feels like a tedious time sink. If you really want to play it, grab the original ROM on a NES emulator where you can skip the tedium.
Also: the mobile controls are TERRIBLE. Most of the game will be playable but frustrating--be prepared to enter a level and leave and enter and leave etc because the directional pad is so poor. But other parts of the game that require fine control, like pushing rocks or avoiding holes, is flat out obnoxious.
