DO NOT USE

I had the privilege of getting threatened of having my car insurance cancelled because the geniuses working at this company forgot to send me an email about setting up the box

If you drive in an area of ‘high crash risk’ or drive at times of day which are also ‘high crash risk’ you will get marked down. Ive had two different black box companies, and they never had me for these two things.

Awful and rude customer service, avoid this company at all costs.

Driving

Great app. Makes you wonder why all insurance companies don’t use this. Helps me but sometimes I forget I’ve got the app.

WORST THING EVER

I genuinely almost NEVER leave reviews but wow. When the app does actually work and doesn’t just tell you to ‘turn on background app refresh’ even though it already is on, it is the worst thing in the world. You can’t make calls on handsfree because it marks you down for phone usage, even though you don’t have to touch your phone to answer it. It logs every single journey, even when you’re not driving, so every single time you travel you have to remember to note on the app that it wasn’t you. It marks you down ridiculously for where and when you are driving, even though it is sometimes unavoidable where/when you drive, especially when shift working. Honestly just do not bother, makes me angry how bad it is and like I say I almost never leave reviews, and if I do it’s usually only if something is really good. This is the OPPOSITE.

Hate it so much

Worst app going I have to track my journeys with it for my insurance and it’s so annoying it’s practically impossible to get a high score I don’t know what they use to track speed but it’s very inaccurate I go the speed limit sometimes I go like 10mph below the limit on a empty road and my score still comes back as high speed plus it’s so annoying that they mark you down for driving in bad areas there’s nothing I can do to help that I drive 2mins away from me to the gym and I always get low ratings because I’m apparently in a bad area such a joke

App issues

Not great, it’s so harsh on short journeys when I'm not driving an hour to work/school etc everyday, ultimately giving me a low average score which doesn’t reflect my driving. It also is terrible at tracking my journey as I will look at the logged journey and it would say I was driving across a field or houses which causes me to not be able to mark the journey as it will give me a low score. Not a great app or insurance with little communication when expressing these issues within the app. Pay the extra 100 to a more recognised insurance.

The most stupid thing I’ve ever come across

** PLEASE DELETE YOUR INSURANCE WITH THIS COMPANY AND SPEND A LITTLE MORE MONEY IF NEEDED TO GET ALTERNATE INSURANCE, THIS APP IS A JOKE.**
Didn’t realise I had to download this app and record journeys before I took out my insurance, thank god for a 14 day period at the start of my insurance where I can cancel without getting charged fees. This app is a joke. It’s not accurate whatsoever and records every single journey whether you’re a passenger in another car or other mode of transport. Then you have a certain amount of time to manually go on and click on each journey whether you were actually driving or not. There’s a limited amount of time to amend them before it’s stored. It’s not accurate at all and quite frankly I cancelled and didn’t care if my insurance was £100 more as I am not spending my time rifling through this trash app.
I’m 29 and own a 2018 golf type R, I have no doubts this app would have increased my insurance next year, even if I spend hours of my time changing any journeys to being a passenger or on alternate transport. Moreso it states my insurance may be cancelled if I don’t log a journey in 14 days… I’m going away in 2 months for 16 days abroad so what the hell would have happened then anyway? Probably cancelled and having to pay fees. Quite honestly the worst thing I’ve ever come across.

Most terrible black box app I’ve ever used

Having been on a few black box policies, this app is absolutely the worst.

My past policies, I’ve consistently had scores 70-90 on every journey. I have seen consistent metric in other apps like this to describe my journey. This one? Well, it ranges to say the least.

This one seems to randomly generate a number, throw a “high risk” road tag at the quietest residential street with no crash history, and call it a day.

This is not a review written by someone who can’t drive, who is annoyed their app is telling them so. This is a completely sane driver (don’t ask me - ask my previous apps that do the same thing!) who is getting completely arbitrary scores.

A score of 50 for a journey took mostly at 20 miles per hour, at a snails pace of acceleration, through a quiet area, at the best time of the day? Nope, that’s gonna be a medium acceleration warning. Oh, and stop driving on that high crash risk street with, um… one small roundabout and a few shops. And god forbid, a pedestrian crossing!

Can only imagine the scores of people who actually drive on remotely dangerous roads. Then again, this app probably thinks they’re perfectly safe!

To the company who uses this app - I truly hope you are not making decisions on people’s policies with this thing. Can see some complaints coming, if you’re not inundated with them already.

A word of advice from a customer: make life easier for yourselves - sort your app out!

Utter rubbish

Has to be one of the worst apps I’ve ever used.

Pros: slightly interesting to see a journey you’ve done.
Cons: where do I start….
Says I’ve used my mobile when driving. Wrong! Even when put in the glovebox it still says it’s been used. I can only put this down to it detecting notifications.
Doesn’t detect when car has stopped, it even tracked me walking around the shops for 20mins! Made even worse when having your phone to pay at the petrol station which then says you’ve been using your phone whilst driving!
Time of day, this thing doesn’t know night from day. Driving at night I can understand but in the summer at 7pm when the sun is shining, what’s the problem? It penalises you for driving to work and then driving home.
Slow and buggy, this app is hardly ever updated.
It only gives you 3 days to confirm your journey, but I’ve been caught out multiple times in taxis and buses etc. it should alert you when the time is close that you need to confirm a journey.

Overall rubbish, I only had to get this with my insurance and I will happily pay not to have this terrible app. Also, where is all that data on my journeys going…..

Isn’t accurate

I was puzzled why I had scores around and below 80 when I considered my driving to be at a high standard.
I tested the speed score over ten journeys making sure I kept below the speed limit. The app still gave me 78 out of 100.
It showed low scores for quick acceleration and harsh braking when there wasn’t any.
It even gave me a low score for using my mobile even though I left it on the back seat of the car.
Makes no sense. If you get low scores will this mean a increase in price next year when you renew?

Absolute rubbish

Wouldn’t even give this 1 star. Giving me a “poor” for driving at 7pm, am I supposed to leave work early? A poor for “harsh braking”. Sorry but I don’t think these people understand how bad the roads are here. Narrow roads with people parked either side - am I supposed to drive into the cars coming towards me?? Has me fuming. My driving was perfectly safe yet my scores have always been below 50. Extremely annoying. Also, the road risk section?? How is every single road near me considered a high risk for crashes? Where the hell else am I supposed to drive??? Every road is the same, this needs to be sorted out. I urge the developers to please look into this ASAP. I am enraged about this.

It’s just given me a 17 for moving my car into the driveway from outside the house. I am beyond infuriated about this.

Not fit for purpose.

Where to begin?

The app penalises you if you drive during rush hour. It penalises you if you drive on main roads. It penalises you if you drive in town centres. If you record short journeys then they won’t even register.

You can drive perfectly smoothly, adhering to all speed limits, with smooth acceleration and braking, yet it will score you below average. Does the app take into consideration the abysmal state of our roads here in England? Having to constantly zig-zag across the roads to avoid all the potholes and craters which is now the same story nationwide?

Do the developers of the app even drive themselves? Are they even old enough to drive, or are they still at college using public transport?

The app is as barebones as you can get. There’s not even a “go back” button to be found so that if you inspect your score breakdown and want to return to the main screen, you can’t from within the app. You have to close the whole app and reopen it. Poorly conceived.

Only having 155 characters for the Feedback form is also restrictive but then that was probably intentional!

Inconsistent

I’ve been using this app for over a month and whilst there are some good things about it (the fact that it’s an app that tracks your driving skills rather than a physical telematics box), it is majorly inconsistent, especially with the braking sensitivity as one reviewer mentioned. It just seems that this is one thing I cannot control. I am very conscious about breaking smoothly but when stuck in traffic, moving at snails pace, it gave me the worst rating I’ve had for braking! Surely that cannot be right and brings my overall score right down.

If the developers manage to fix this then I think they’ll have something useful on their hands.

Strange

I enjoy using the app to help track my speed and acceleration etc. however the app always says my phone interaction is poor, I absolutely do not ever use my phone whilst driving and it seems a shame it is so unreliable in this sense. The only thing I can think of is that it tracks phone usage before a journey and after and assumes it was used whilst driving! Very disappointing
Show more

Response from developer

Thanks for your feedback. It might be worth checking that there aren’t any apps still open in the background before you start driving. Also leaving it a minute or so, after you’ve driven before using your phone to make sure the app has finished recording your journey might help. Please feel free to drop us an email to support@privilege.com, if you have any more queries. Lisa

Terrible

This is a terrible app! When stuck in traffic it says you break and accelerate harshly even though you aren’t moving anywhere.

Playing music from your phone that’s connected to the car speakers counts as you being on your phone whilst driving. Also forgetting to close your apps down properly counts towards your bad drive score.

You’re also marked down for driving at different times of the day and going through certain areas that a crash my have been reported there, but what else are you meant to do if you’re driving to work to be there on time and there is only one way to get there?

Overall, I think this is an awful app. If I could give it a zero star I would.

Confusing and untrustworthy!

I used to have a black box installed in the dashboard of my car (both with privilege and with other companies), and always scored very highly for my driving on most aspects. However, since having to swap over to the mobile app my scores have completely changed for the worse and I can’t understand how or why. My phone automatically connects to my car’s Bluetooth when I get in, but even if I don’t answer any calls or listen to music (via the Bluetooth!) my mobile interaction score has still gone down? Don’t get me started on if I have to use Google maps on my phone! My smooth driving score always plummets if I get stuck in traffic, but how am I possibly supposed to know when and how to avoid this? My road risk seems to be low whichever route I take, and this is impossible to change as there are only a certain amount of ways that I can get to work? Do I take the motorway? Main roads? Add an extra hour into my journey by trying to find all the little back roads (which is likely impossible anyway because I work just outside the city centre). They’ve essentially made it impossible for you to even know how to do good with this aspect. The only thing that hasn’t changed from when I had my physical installed black boxes is my score for speed, thank goodness. Although this is 1 of 5 aspects so it’s not exactly reassuring.

***EDIT*** since writing the above review, I have emailed Privilege (as requested in the responding comment) and have yet to receive a reply. This was months ago now.

Terrible and unreliable

I Recently began the insurance with this app and it is very unreliable tracking journeys, sometimes cutting my journey across housing estates and therefore giving me a 0 for road risk.

Secondly the smooth driving is shocking, I don’t know what it is but I get ridiculously low scores for driving smoothly but when I am in a rush the score is higher! Also this app is terrible while in traffic, I was in standstill traffic and the app displayed me having extreme braking and extreme acceleration although I could barely move my car a meter.

All in all I would not suggest this app to anyone who’s wanting to have it affect their insurance!

Terrible black box idea

I would score this 0 stars if I could.

The app marks you down for driving on roads that are ‘high risk’ such as the road I turn onto when coming out of my street and I get marked down for it.
The time of day is a load of rubbish as they stated there is no curfew but sometimes if you’re out late you get scored 1 for time of day and then the average score becomes very low( under 10) even though the other criteria have fairly high scores like 50+ which doesn’t make sense as the average should be 40-50.
Also I have apple car play in my car and by law you are allowed to use a handset device to take calls but you get marked down for taking them and even more if they’re over a minute long.
Harsh breaking is another area where it marks you down even though sometimes you have no option but to break more harshly than usual.
Smooth driving is a Load of rubbish how can they judge what smooth driving is or isn’t espeically when some people’s cars accelerate more quicker than other.

Having an app as a black box was the worst possible thing I could’ve done as it can’t possible work well 70% of the time due to myself having an older phone which means my gps can be totally off sometimes and not always give a good depiction of my driving. If I was to use privilege again it would be for a non telematics policy but I think it’s already too late as I have done a lot of mileage and my score is around 50. Also if it’s the case where they expect me to pay more for my second year after going through one year of this rubbish app that I have given up on I will most definitely change providers

Don’t bother getting insured with xpert

Every journey I took was scored low , apparently I was speeding when I always made sure to stay below speed limit , phone usage score was 91 even tho I didn’t even touch my phone once ?? Low score for braking and acceleration when I made sure to drive extra smooth just to see if my scores would change but they are still low ??? It’s impossible to get a good score on here no matter how perfectly you drive . Every journey says that I’m driving on dangerous roads? For a 5 minute journey to my local shop they can’t expect me to use a motorway surely ….

Confusing scoring system.

App marks me down for interacting with my phone when I haven’t even touched my phone. Always marked low for my time of day driving and road risk when driving to and from work which is ridiculous when there is only one road I can take. Marked low for acceleration and breaking when stuck in traffic. Seems like there is no way to get a really good score because simply getting in your car is enough for the app to mark you down.

Bizarre app

Randomly won’t record some of my journeys.
Gives a bad score if you drive on a road that’s ever had a crash (most likely every road in the world has had a crash).... feel like no black box type app should record anything other than capability to drive well/smooth and stick to speed limit.

Also if you drive after 4pm or before 10am, you get a rubbish score for time of day, but I also get a rubbish score for the time of day when I drive at 1pm, so there’s no benefits to this app, defo needs reconsideration into that aspect.

Never use my phone whilst driving and actually had it locked away yesterday in rucksack with no apps open in the background yet it still said my mobile phone interaction was only 91..

Very confusing app..
