When it works…..
Response from developer
Hi, and thanks for the detailed write-up - that's genuinely useful. What you're describing is almost certainly macOS Trash behaviour on secondary drives. CleanTwin moves duplicates to the Trash rather than erasing them outright, so nothing is ever lost by accident. Every drive keeps its own Trash folder (/Volumes/YourDrive/.Trashes), so the files do leave their original folders - but they stay on that drive, and its free space won't change at all until you empty the Trash in Finder. On a large external drive that reads exactly like "nothing happened". Worth checking: open Finder's Trash with the drive connected and see whether your duplicates are sitting there. If they are, emptying it will release the space in one go. Two other things that can hold a drive back: volumes formatted as NTFS mount read-only on macOS and can't be modified at all, and drives carried over from another Mac can arrive with ownership settings that block changes (Finder > Get Info > "Ignore ownership on this volume"). The current update makes all of this visible - live progress while files are being moved, the exact reason for anything that can't be moved, and a clear note when duplicates land in a secondary drive's Trash instead of your Mac's. If the files aren't in the Trash on your end, write to us at support@secure-software.org happy to look at your specific setup.
