In 1980, a programmer named Donald Brown sat down at an Apple II and built something remarkable — a text adventure system he called Eamon. It wasn't just a game. It was a world: a Main Hall where adventurers gathered, a weapon shop, a bank, a wizard who'd teach you spells. And beyond the hall, a growing library of dungeons and quests that anyone could explore, or build. Brown gave Eamon away. No copyright, no charge, no conditions — just an invitation to play and create. Over the following decade, volunteers wrote more than 250 adventures and shared them freely. Eamon became one of the earliest examples of an open, community-driven game ecosystem.
