Amazing game!!

This devs games are all fantastic in their own unique way and amazingly, cover a range of genres. Don’t let the low general rating fool you, this game is amazing and has improved a ton since its release.

There’s nothing quite like loading up a ship gradually with side-facing weapons, flying around enemy ships, and watching as your weapons let fire and tear into them. All weapons are directional - one ship has mostly side-facing mounts, so missiles/lasers/turrets are launched sideways like an old Pirate ship having to pull up alongside what it was trying to shoot at.

Except while you go past them firing, they’re trying to aim at you where you were a second ago and miss spectacularly. Different ships have different mount configs so you can have one with every weapon facing forward, or one with a rear facing mount so you can “run away” and drop mines/fire missiles/drop automated turrets behind you while they give chase for example.

The tactics this one feature alone provides is phenomenal. AND you unlock new ships and weapons and upgrades as you progress.

My only MAJOR complaint is the control scheme: drag your finger around to steer, tap with another finger to fire, or swipe to dodge. Often, the game registers a tap as a swipe and instead of firing my weapon I end up catapulting forward in a dodge straight into enemy fire.

One finger control setting isn’t any better: drag to steer, release to fire, except releasing causes you to stop moving while you fire and you end up a sitting duck for that brief moment.

This game DESPERATELY needs a Joystick overlay with a dedicated fire and dodge button, with joystick large and in the centre or right side of the screen, and the fire and dodge buttons on the left side (or draggable in settings to where you want them and how big). Even swiping to dodge would be fine still as long as it doesn’t work over the designated fire button. About to email the dev about this and fingers crossed he responds!

Excellent Game

Totally worth the admission. The developer still add content and supports this game long after release. At this point I would even pay for additional purchases, but it’s not been necessary frankly. One of my favorite developers for mobile by far. Lots of nuance, seriously repayable, but not trying to compel you to constantly be engaged with the games. I hadn’t played it in months, so I just picked it up again, and I know I am going to log in some fun for at least the next two weeks. What’s great is that this review can be applied to just about every game Kyle Barrett has put out. Give the game a shot if you want to enjoy quick, interesting fun game sessions for a game that clearly a lot of thought and care was put into

Awkward

I love ultra blade! This one is as bad as UB is good, however. The difficulty in survival mode seems to think level 3 isn’t a ship max, and that you’ve brought 10 friends or something. Dozens of ships swarm you immediately. Your starting pea shooter is laughable

A brilliant, must-have danmaku

I’ve spent WAY more time with this one than I’d care to admit, and I don’t even like danmaku games! EotU is as hard as nails, but don’t let its high difficulty scare you off; it’s the right kind of challenging, the kind that makes you, the player, WANT to “git gud.”

I just have three issues/complaints: the warp projector will crash the game when equipped on any ship some reason; the game crashes without fail on level 59/60 of adventure mode (my phone’s an older model, so this one might not be the game’s fault); and the game doesn’t tell you HOW to unlock new ships and weapons—when you unlock something, it just shows you a prompt saying you’ve unlocked it.

Even with the aforementioned issues, the game’s a great time for danmaku fans and non-fans alike. I highly recommend it.

Major Bug

overall an amazing, well-made game that I would definitely recommend. I’ve enjoyed playing this game for several hours, but a game-breaking bug has really hurt my view of this game. another review has already mentioned this, but every time the warp needle cannon appears (can’t remember the exact name, but the light weapon that bounces between enemies) the game freezes and an error message is displayed. since it is impossible to avoid having the weapon appear, it is frustrating for runs to be deleted. I do love this game and hope that this bug can be fixed soon <3

Response from developer

Fixed in the latest update, thanks for the bug report!

Love the game

Any plans to add/update?

Weapon plasmoid gun

Hello
Love this game. The second plasmoid gun that bounces from one enemy to another keeps crashing my game when I choose to equip it. Please fix this. Thank you. I have the newest iPad mini.

Ok but a few problems

The heavy weapons are a little underpowered and are uncomfortable to use as you have to turn your entire body to aim it. I feel as if we should be able to aim it manually. The light weapons are fine and are much stronger than the heavy weapons, and there is no use for the heavy weapons if light weapons are there. The controls are also a bit fiddly. I feel as if we should get legendary or better weapons after defeating a boss, as it would reward the player for achieving something and also the levels following are extremely difficult. Other than that this is a pretty good game.

Great game

Same person also made immortal rogue.

Definitely a must buy.

It’s even better than you think

This game blows me away. It is so much fun! A seemingly simple one touch control scheme for a SHMUP blossoms into amazing, harrowing epic space battles that will keep you entertained until the End of the Universe!

At first, I too had difficulty with the control scheme, dragging my finger around my ship and blocking my own screen. That was until I realized you can just use any position on the screen as a virtual joystick and keep your fingers out of the way. The controls are actually more responsive than they appear on first use. You just have to spend some time with them.

Spoilers below if you are having trouble advancing in the game.

The game is wicked fun. If roguelike SHMUP space battles are in your blood, this is the game you need to buy!

Update: Weeks later, and I still can’t put this game down!

***SPOILER ALERT***

The more time you spend with the game, the better you will become. This first tip isn’t a spoiler per se, but I encourage you: do not give up hope after just a few runs.

The one touch control is genius, and allows anyone to have a virtual joystick ambidextrously, anywhere on the screen. You don’t even have to play the game in portrait mode, if you’d rather turn it landscape. But the game text will still be rotated 90 degrees though.

The invisible, virtual joystick is magnitude-sensitive. Meaning, the farther out you drag your thumb from where you began touching, the faster the ship will go. So if you need to keep things slow and steady, use a light touch and control how far you move your thumb. Practice drawing tiny circles on your screen. Then draw bigger ones, and you’ll feel the difference. You can almost slow the ship to a crawl with practice, then rush forward to avoid a near miss laser blast!

Boost is your friend. At first you’ll crash around a bit. Then you will come to realize, that you don’t just boost in the direction you were going. You can swipe to boost in any direction - your ship can make sudden course changes this way! Now suddenly, you’re making commando hit-and-runs on star destroyers, and dancing among the asteroids!

The story choices are not arbitrary. The pain you feel will be your teacher.

In the beginning, focus on getting XP power ups to advance your permanent ship options. It doesn’t matter if you die and only got one XP that run, you just made progress. That’s roguelike in a nutshell.

That’s all for now. Go play!

As you progress, the game opens up beyond the small contained sector levels. Keep pushing yourself to go farther, and you will discover a more sandbox-like experience!

Some Fixes, Then Greatness

The developer clearly continues to care about his game (which makes sense after so much effort already put in!). The last couple of updates have been awesome. Here are my further suggestions:

1. Boost gets me killed more often than it helps. Now that two finger control is in, maybe make boost activate when swiping with the second finger?

2. There is a bug where you end up on a stage with infinite squid things (tentacles and with mouth on top). They keep spawning even if you kill them over and over for an hour and your hand cramps up painfully. Another thing to note is that when this happens the squid things also have a glitched attack where they have the spark animation but no “bullets” fly out. So the poor things are defenseless except for ramming you. Every time I’ve gotten this glitched stage (twice now) I’ve maxed out my ship XP, since they continue to drop that.

3. What is the logic behind when you unlock a ship? I have all my ships maxed out and any further runs seem to just waste XP until I “magically” unlock a new ship between stages. Also, a better way to manage your hangar would be cool, like the screen on the promotional stuff where you see all your ships arranged in a grid.

4. More scenarios, with greater impact on game play, are of course welcome. I have all of the in game text and choices memorized lol.

Worst control I have ever experienced on iOS.

I have two specific criticisms:

1. There is a significant delay between when you touch down on the screen and when the ship responds to your input. I cannot understand why this exists in a game with tiny, cluttered stages, and bullets flying everywhere. If you need to adjust your finger mid-combat, you’re probably going to get hit.

2. If the ship keeps moving forward when you lift your finger, then why allow the player to decelerate at all? Why not just have the ship decelerate to a stop when you lift your finger? The current system makes the opposite of sense... it’s like having a car that goes forward in neutral and goes into neutral when you throw it in reverse.

Immortal Rogue had tight and intuitive controls. What exactly happened here? In its current state, this game is trash.

Awesome

Great game! Very addictive!

Great idea, a few suggestions

It’s a fun and addicting game to play a few minutes at a time. Has some clear similarities to Immortal Rogue, so fans of that should like this. Interesting decisions in upgrading the ship. At first seems impossibly difficult but gets better with practice.

A few minor complaints: 1. I wish there were something useful to do with XP once the ship is at level 3. 2. Some of the upgrades are just not useful. For example, increased movement speed, or anything that involves boosting, would just make me more likely to crash. 3. All of the locations I can visit feel about the same. It would be nice if each had unique rules.

Mr. Barrett wins again!

I played Ever Knight until Immortal Rogue came out and now that End of the Universe is out...the fun only continues! Mr. Barrett has a knack for making games with simple mechanics and deep gameplay....just what mobile needs!! If you like this game, try them all! They’re ALL fun and immersive.

Its not good. It’s definitely not worth 99p

It’s not for me.

5/5 Stars

What a great game. Thoroughly enjoy every aspect of my gaming experience so far. A+ rating for the developers on this one.
