Garbage app. Liars

Said I can draw out my words in question but there isn’t any option for the free app.

Essential in my Chinese studies but definitions not always correct

I use this app almost daily in my Mandarin Chinese studies and could not imagine studying without it. It seems to recognizes more words and idioms than Google translate does, and my favorite feature is the stroke-order animation. I also like the usage examples. And it’s free!

My gripe, however, and reason I’m giving 4 stars, is that some definitions omit the most common uses of the words. For example, 张 (zhāng)is most commonly a measure word for flat objects, but Line Dictionary translates it only to “open; extend; exaggerate; look; open for business; lay...on.” So when I try to learn its meaning in a sentence like 这张床很柔软 (Zhè zhāng chuáng hěn róuruǎn), for example, which means “This bed is soft,” I wonder why the sentence seems to say, “This open bed very soft.” These omissions or incorrect definitions are so common that I essentially can’t trust the definitions. Worst, when I see these errors, there is no way to flag or suggest a definition. I want a feature where if I see a blatantly wrong error or omission I can report it or suggest a definition to the developer. As of now, I have no idea how to alert the developer (other than through this review) of these omissions.

I understand the definitions come from Collins Chinese-English dictionary but are they updated? Is there a way to update them? This is a great app, but if you let users flag words and then have someone check them and update the definitions, it will be much better!

cannot using handwriting

sorry but i dont know why i cannot see the symbol “pen” for handwriting. how can i do???

3 stars

I’ve been using Nciku and LINE for a while, but on the app, I don’t see an option to draw the characters then search that up, unlike on the website. Add that and you’ll get 4 stars.

If it’s already there, make it more accessible.

No traditional

It’s a great app. Add a setting for traditional characters and I will change my rating.

No customer support —Sticks on one setting and won’t edit or delete.

I’ve struggled with this for hours. It gives Thai as my default setting, won’t allow me to access Chinese or Indonesian, which I also downloaded, and when I try to delete the Thai dictionary, which I don’t need , and which prevents me from using the others, I get the message “ You need at least one dictionary”. It just doesn’t work if you happen to download more than one language, and, again , there’s no customer or tech support , and no directions whatsoever online for fixing this mess.

A Treasure of a tool! Five stars!

After using Line for two weeks, I realized it is an amazing help when I am studying a lesson in simplified Mandarin Chinese: if I am not sure of what I heard or what I am reading, I can either use the microphone (with Chinese activated on my keyboard, of course) or hand-write the characters, and the app analyzes the sentence as it heard it or as you wrote it, then you tap “Analyze” and it gives you the pinyin AND the English translation. If I keep the phone a bit away from the sound source, it captures the sound a little better. I rarely have to do it more than once. Next step would be to try the app in a conversation with a Chinese Mandarin-speaking person. I bet it would work very well, as long as both speakers have a little patience to let the app analyze what is being said. It only takes a few seconds per sentence. The app accepts up to 500 characters at a time, which is a lot. This app is an astonishingly excellent tool, and I use it together with Pleco (Pleco gives me the stroke order of any word I need to study). A HUGE THANKS TO THE GIFTED DEVELOPER(S) OF THIS APP!

Great daily Chinese practice

The “daily Chinese” is my favorite learning feature of this app. It’s a spoken dialogue between two people talking about day to day and work situations. It has the mandarin, pinyin and translation as well.
I’m so glad they recently changed the male speaker to someone who speaks a little slower, it makes it much easier to understand. Thanks!

用不了

bad

I love it.

A minute of usage and I'm in love already.

Great app. Highly recommend !

Very user friendly. Fun to use.

Missing so many great features

I love using Nciku's website and I was hoping the app would be a direct reflection of that, but I can't do handwriting, stroke order or see the detailed descriptions of words with examples for some reason. Please update with these features.

Good but can be improved

I agree with what the people has said before, should have the option to change from
Simplified Chinese to and from traditional Chinese. Another great usage that could be added would probably be the handwriting recognition. This is a great app. I'll definitely recommend to my foreign friends that are trying to learn Chinese, but please improve.

Very useful

I like this app so much. Very easy to use

Icon lost on iPad

After update this version of app on my iPad. The icon of app has lost.

Please Add Handwriting Recognition for Chinese

Yes, Apple does provide handwriting inputs, but those are far less efficient than Pinyin/etc., and since I'm already using three different keyboards for three languages, adding a fourth keyboard which I mostly won't use will only make keyboard switching even more annoying than it already is. Please, if this is possible, bring one of your greatest features found on your desktop version (handwriting recognition) to this app! That will make it perfect. Thank you for your consideration.

Great app

It's a simple app and has helpful and useful content. One thing that would be really great is if it had a word of the day widget to go inside of Notification Center.

Best App for casual learning

Best way to casually learn and listen to accurate pronunciation of Mandarin Chinese

It's great but no traditional Chinese option

This app definitely fall behind other dictionary apps. There isn't any bopomofo and traditional Chinese interfaces :(

😍

Great for learning chinese at all levels !!!
