Good concept, flawed execution

I love the concept of this app. However I think it would benefit from several improvements. When you click on a word for translation it only translates that word, not the surrounding context which is needed for many phrases and idioms. The app also then frequently freezes when I want to resume listening after clicking on a word. The audio is in an AI voice rather than the natural speaking you would hear in conversation.

Response from developer

Thank you for such a detailed review. You're right about the voice: the audio is synthesized, not a human narrator. The freeze when you go back to listening after tapping a word is something we're looking into. On context: in the current version, the word card has a sentence icon that translates the whole sentence the word is in, which helps a lot with phrases and idioms. If the freezing keeps happening, please write to support@eppika.com with your device model and iOS version so we can look at your case.

Blank screen

The App often won’t open on my iPad or my phone, which is very annoying as I have paid to use it. I get a blank screen with the parrot on it and nothing happens.
When I can get in, I have found it to be a useful App. I like that I can swap levels and languages easily.
Sometimes the stories don’t quite follow, or repeat certain sections (but you can review each book to flag this up).

Response from developer

This one is worth getting to the bottom of. Could you email support@eppika.com with your device and your iOS version? A blank splash screen can come from a few different places, and that tells us which one. Thanks for flagging the repeated sections too; those book reports do reach us.

영어선택했는데

왜 스패니쉬가 나와요?

Response from developer

혼란을 드려 죄송합니다. 앱은 '학습 중'에 설정된 언어의 책을 보여 드리는데, 지금 이 설정이 스페인어로 되어 있는 것 같습니다. 최신 버전 앱에서 프로필 → 학습 중을 눌러 영어와 레벨을 선택하시면 영어 책이 나옵니다. 그래도 스페인어가 나오면 support@eppika.com으로 메일 주세요. 해결되셨다면 리뷰를 수정해 주시면 큰 힘이 됩니다.

Eppika

I am really enjoying this app. I love reading the stories and learning Spanish at the same time. It is really helping me conjugate verbs and understand the use of pronouns. Both of which are difficult for me to do. I highly recommend this to a person who has a decent vocabulary started and is ready to put it to use. I am definitely able to produce sentences better now too. That means I am finally able to Hablo español 😀. I read first, then listen and read along, then just listen. You can also review your hardest words with flash cards and hear them spoken correctly.

Response from developer

Thank you so much! Reading first, then reading along with the audio, then just listening is a great way to use the books. We're so glad the verbs and pronouns are starting to click. ¡Sigue así!

Fun and useful, could use more content for high-intermediate and advanced learners

The condensed stories are really good for lower and intermediate levels, but as a more advanced Spanish learner I found that the retellings were a little shorter and more simplified than I would hope. Somewhat simplified prose is fine for practicing fluid reading, but a lot of details that make a story rich are omitted, and characters’ internal thoughts are often overexplained, which can make the content a bit boring after a while. I think advanced learners can be trusted to follow more complex ideas as long as the language is familiar. While I appreciate the inclusion of a few unabridged texts in the newest update, I wish there was something between “intermediate” and “unedited 19th century originals” — retellings that still have the detail and nuance of the originals, but use modern language. If the developers could include some content for learners at this level it would be 5 stars for me.

Response from developer

Thank you for the detailed review. If you haven't tried it yet, the Advanced level sits between Intermediate and Native in the current version, and it's the step we'd suggest before the unabridged originals. Your point about keeping the original's detail and nuance in modern language is a fair one, and we've passed it on to our content team.
