A couple times today I lost the Camino shell and this app got me back on track.
Failed when I needed it most
Bought this. DOWNLOADED specific area map for offline use. Got to trailhead, all looked good. Got three miles in, all looked good. Note that I was on airplane mode and app worked great. Then about five miles in near a 12,000 pass, storm blowing in and no trail visible — the app goes black. Nothing. No map. Nothing. Restart the app. Nothing. Restart phone. Nothing. Black screen. Cannot zoom out, in. Nothing. Dead app. Fortunately I had another app on my phone that wasn’t as sexy, BUT THE OTHER APP WORKED! Not as detailed or nifty as this one (when it worked), but that other app got me on the trail and off the pass before the lightning and hail hit. When this app works, 5/5. But when I needed it most, it totally failed. -5/5. And yes, I tested it without cell and without wifi several times and it worked. Do not recommend for critical situations.

What you need Where you need it
Trail conditions, water location and conditions, local services and hostels, warnings, navigation. The whole enchilada!
Used it for 10+ years with only 2 freeze issues
In 2025 and 2026, I found the app completely freezes up after recording the hikes on the John Muir Trail for 4 days without having cell service to connect back to the mothership. The app would open, but would immediately freeze up with no buttons working until I killed the app. This was devastating in the middle of a long thru hike. I had to delete the app and reinstall it to get it to work again and that lost the track recording I did for those days. This is a major bug.

Froze during JMT hike
While the water and comment features are good, do not rely on this for your navigation. After day 3 it quit working. When I opened the app it just froze. Restarting phone and app did nothing. A friend off trail gave suggestions through my Garmin in Reach but none worked. The app froze a couple of days later for the person I was hiking with. It’s unacceptable for a back country navigation app to completely lock up and become useless. Fortunately we had paper maps and used Strava to track time and miles traveled. HAVE MAPS DOWNLOADED ON A DIFFERENT APP. DO NOT RELY solely on FarOut.
