This does not only harm the men who may be emotionally or financially exploited. It is also deeply unfair to the genuine Filipino women who want marriage and real love, because their honesty becomes harder to recognise in an environment where users are repeatedly made suspicious.
This is especially serious because FilipinoCupid charges substantial subscription fees for important communication features. Paying members should receive more than access to messages—they should receive meaningful protection, stronger verification and effective action when suspicious conduct is reported. A dating company that markets itself as a trusted place for serious relationships has a responsibility to protect the emotional wellbeing, time and money of its members.
The developers should introduce:
Mandatory government-ID and live-selfie verification for members who want to contact paying users.
Clear badges distinguishing identity-verified profiles from profiles verified only by email.
Technology to detect stolen photographs, duplicate accounts and suspicious requests for money, gifts or paid travel.
In-app video verification so members can confirm that the person matches their photographs.
A reporting system that accepts screenshots and gives the reporting member a clear outcome.
Stronger action against repeat offenders, including blocking linked devices and duplicate accounts.
A “serious relationship or marriage” verification section covering intentions, current relationship status and willingness to video call.
Regular transparency reports explaining how many fraudulent profiles were removed and how quickly reports were investigated.
