User reviews

Easy to use, my son loves it!!

This is a great app, easy for my son to use, and gives great activities for me to do with him or to let him do himself! We had so much fun doing the rhyming and giggled a lot! This is the kind of app that you want in the grocery store- easy to use, fun, and really meets the kiddos where they are! I highly recommend this app!

This app is great but once you pay for it, it doesn’t open up all the tests. Very frustrating to pay $20 for something that does NOT WORK!!

Response from developer

Hi Jackie, thank you for your feedback! We are sorry you were surprised about the once per week assessment model, and I can completely understand your frustration. We intentionally designed First Choice Assessment to be used just once per week. Parents and children can then spend the rest of the week off the screen, practicing new skills with the recommended activities tailored to your child’s individual progress. Based on our experience, assessments most accurately reflect a child’s knowledge if they are introduced on a weekly schedule. We have seen that the results of children who complete multiple assessments in one sitting may not be as accurate or reflective of their knowledge. By introducing just one five-minute assessment per week, children are able to give their full attention to the weekly assessment. Additionally, in order for you to see meaningful improvement, it is important to give your child time to learn and practice new skills before you assess them again. That’s why we build in an 8-12 week growth period into the schedule before your child is assessed on the same skill again. We would love a chance to help, so email us at hello@cognitivetoybox.com and we would be happy to troubleshoot any issues, or answer any questions you may have!

Fantastic App

As a speech-language pathologist, parents frequently ask me for app recommendations to work on literacy skills at home. This can be a challenging task, especially when trying to reduce screen time in a world where children spend plenty of time with devices. I want to ensure the iPad apps I recommend are not only efficiently targeting the skills necessary for school readiness, but are simple to navigate and use, and of course engaging and fun. First Choice Assessment is my new go-to! The early literacy assessments are clear and accurate, and the off-iPad activities are excellent. This app provides your child with the necessary exposure and practice with the skills required for kindergarten success. Highly recommend!
