About
Every year, up to a billion birds die from window collisions in the United States alone. Most happen at ordinary homes, and most are preventable. Birds can not see glass, just the sky and trees reflected in it or a clear path to plants on the other side. Flyway helps you understand how your windows could impact residential and migratory birds (and offers effective fixes), lets you report a bird-window collision to impact research, and maps out nearby rescue centers if you find an injured bird.
Flyway is a free, non-commercial app with three simple tools:
CHECK YOUR WINDOW SAFETY
Answer a few quick questions about a window (size, reflectivity, nearby feeders and plants, and lighting). Flyway rates the collision risk to both the resident birds that live in your area year-round and the migratory birds passing through. From simple decal patterns to external screens to moving a bird feeder, Flyway offers fixes tailored to your window. This feature is also simplified for a building side that may have more than one window.
REPORT A BIRD COLLISION (U.S. only)
Found a bird that hit a window? Log the species (or "I don't know"), its condition, and the time and place. If the bird is injured or dazed, Flyway helps you get it to professional care. Your reports contribute to citizen-science research that helps everyone understand where and why collisions happen.
FIND A RESCUE CENTER (U.S. only)
When you find an injured or dazed bird, Flyway lists licensed wildlife rehabilitators near you, sorted by distance, with a tap-to-call button, their hours, and which birds they take. Always call ahead as licensed professionals can tell you what to do at home and whether they have space.
WHY IT MATTERS
Small, permanent changes to a window and its surroundings can prevent the vast majority of strikes. Flyway takes the guesswork and extra research out of it by telling you exactly what to change for your home, based on how collisions actually happen.
PRIVATE BY DESIGN
Flyway is free, has no ads, and does not require an account. We do not ask for your name or email. Your location is used only to look up local bird data, find nearby rescue centers, and tag a report.
Bird distribution data is powered by the eBird Status and Trends Project at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology.
