Unlimited is definitely not… but what is it? 🤷🏼‍♂️

Had the service for 2 months.

Got a very curt email about excessive use after the first month… I had used about 65gb during that time… an amount I agree is significant. My second month I used about 35gb. Exactly 2 months in got a termination email. It states “Despite these terms being clearly laid out in our terms and conditions, your usage patterns have continued to violate these terms. As a result your account has been permanently closed and service discontinued, effectively immediately.”

No hint or details provided on how much is considered “fair use” how much to adjust usage, or even a place to check usage (you can look on your phone statistics but if you reset them, there is no place to find out)

*****Update, during this time I had a second account for my iPad. I’ve tied to login to cancel multiple times but keep getting a “provisioning” error in the app … so now, ironically, my easiest way to cancel my subscription is to TRY to use too much data so it gets shut down. Stay away!!!!

Fair Use Agreement is Obscure

I bought a new phone. Installed Fonus with “Unlimited Data” and a day later it virtually stopped (download 0.007 upload 0.43). The support said I violated the Fair Use Agreement. I asked how much data was to much but they would not specify. Again note I had unlimited data

Totally broken.

I couldn’t make any phone calls out without going through tech support. Sometimes hours to fix, last time never. Was told by tech support “Fonus is not compatible with company or private numbers”. I asked who i can call, and got silence. This is totally useless as a phone app. I got that nonsense above fixed finally Now almost every number i try to call says “insufficient funds”, every number they have to fix this error and it takes days. As soon as im home i quit.
Worst ripoff ever

Terrible service and company

Voice (VoIP) service is low quality even on a fast wifi connection. SMS never works. Data is slow and spotty even compared to the other travel eSIM providers. Fonus customer service is horrendous and might as well be a bunch of AI bots that just tell you to wait 24-48 hours for a fix that never comes.

This app sucks

This is a terrible app. None of these services provided actually worked. It’s not compatible with your phone if you have other providers. Their customer service is borderline nonexistent 10 out of 10 do not recommend.

Completely Unreliable

The data and service were both completely unreliable, it worked for the first couple of weeks and I then had problems every day. Having SOS only in the middle of the city and having no data even though I was on an Unlimited Data plan. As a young female this left me in both unsafe and very inconvenient situations. Safe yourself the time, stress and money and go with any other provider but FONUS.

Terrible service

Over all very misleading. In 15 days I used 42.7GB of unlimited Data. I just received an email that my service was being terminated for over usage/fair usage policy. From rhe beginning.
The setup process took way longer than expected to set up. I was leaving for my flight to Korea and then to Thailand. The porting of your number can take up to 72 hours.
This is not the Nomad Answer they promise

Tech problems & Poor Customer service

I was so shocked when a tech support agent couldn’t fix my issues and when I asked for compensation told me i need to mind my tone. After 3 months with tech issues (incl. voicemail that doesn’t work) I was not going to renew again without having this sorted or move my service. No one ever gets back to you and when they cant fix your issues eventually you have a tone! The app crashes allot the reception is not that good unless you have wifi. Don’t waste your money as you cant get customer service

Fonus services

So far so good. Just replaced my cell phone service from Telus to Fonus. I am happy with the services, unlimited data, global calls and much cheaper than Telus. The customer service and technical support are really fast and all my requests were served to me fast and professional. Thank you Fonus.

Fonus scam

My Experience With Fonus

I feel it’s important to share my recent experience with Fonus so other customers understand what they’re signing up for.

I purchased their plan because it’s advertised everywhere as “unlimited fast data worldwide.” After using what I consider completely normal amounts of data for my professional work (40GB one month and 48GB the next), Fonus throttled my speed for days, making the service almost unusable.

When I asked for clarification, the company stated that this level of usage violates their Fair Usage Policy, despite the fact that nowhere in the main advertising does it explain that normal usage levels would be considered “excessive” for an unlimited plan.

When I insisted on transparency and pointed out the misleading advertising, instead of resolving the issue, Fonus terminated my service immediately.

To be clear:
• 40–48GB of monthly usage is perfectly normal for anyone who works with videos.
• The plan is advertised as unlimited fast data, but the reality is nowhere close.
• Their reaction to criticism was to shut down my service instead of fixing the issue.
• I have requested a full refund and will pursue the appropriate legal steps.

I’m sharing this so travelers and professionals can make an informed decision before choosing Fonus. Transparency matters, and customers deserve clear, honest information about what they are paying for.

Black list and white list feature

Please consider adding blacklist and whitelist features to improve spam-call filtering. For example, an option to allow calls only from saved contacts while automatically rejecting unknown numbers would be very helpful. Additionally, a whitelist option would ensure that specific numbers are always allowed to ring.

Good but needs a little more improvement.

I’ve been a Fonus customer for about three years and it has gotten better every year with much needed updates. The last update allows the app to be recognized by my IPhone a a default app for calling. This is a game changer and now I can use the VOIP the same as a cell service carrier. I’m Canadian and travel to the US often and not having to worry about roaming charges is great. The only reason I give the app 4 stars and not 5 is because with the last update my signal strength diminished. I use to have 4 to 5 bar strength and I’m down to two bars in the same location. I contacted Fonus about the issue and they didn’t have an explanation.

Just put my rating down to 3 stars. The app does not allow you to send any picture over 3K. Almost every picture is over 3K, even screen shots. Fonus answer was that it’s a calling and texting app. If I use TextNow I can send any picture I like and it’s free.

Totally broken.

I couldn’t make any phone calls. Was told by tech support “Fonus is not compatible with company or private numbers”. I asked who i can call, and got silence. I am in the list of supported countries for both ends of the calls i tried. I’m trying to call Rogers mobile, one of the bug three carriers in Canada. This is totally useless as a phone app.

STAY AWAY FROM THIS COMPANY

I’ve been using the service now for 2 1/2 months in Europe about 3/4 of the way through each billing cycle. They shut off my Internet and say that I’m using it to replace my home Internet, which I’m clearly not since I’m traveling the world I bought the most expensive unlimited plan. It also says free, unlimited calls and text and 95% of the time my phone does not work. Every time I contact customer service they make some excuse and say I’ve used all of my free minutes even though I didn’t use any of this month.

Bad service, horrible customer service, and clearly false advertising

No Siri, No Apple car play

Do not touch it. As per their Technical support, you can’t use Fonus with Siri, neither Apple car play. If you want to call, YOU MUST use the Fonus app manualy. As per Driving Laws, you Can’t use your Cel. Phone during driving … so you can’t use your Fonus while driving. Unbelievable in 2025. DO NOT USE FONUS until improvment.

Unusable in Spain

Data connections failed continuously in Spain even though it showed I had signal. Switched to Ubigi which worked.

Avoid at all costs

Don't fall for this company! Fine prints says it VoIP. Customer service are horrible. I don't recommend at all

Service Never Worked—Even after an hour with tech support

The service was never rendered, but I was still charged for the eSIM. The data never functioned, even after manually toggling through all of the available carriers. I again attempted to use the service in Germany and there was no support—not with O2, Vodafone, no one. Tech support guided me through troubleshooting techniques for an hour, and then instead of refunding me after numerous requests, they reinitiated the same troubleshooting script from the beginning. This service was never rendered, but they were happy to taken my money anyways.
