Essential for every backpacking trip
I'm not someone who usually writes reviews, but I felt compelled to say this app is absolutely amazing. I've used the free version for years on almost every backpacking trip, from Alaska to Canada to Utah to Michigan.
The level of detail in the maps is incredible, and being able to use them and stay oriented WITH airplane mode is far superior to anything else I've tried. It's the first app I use to route all my trips

CarPlay issue
No display on CarPlay . The map will not display on any 3 of my CarPlay vehicles…. I want to buy the premium version but will be useless without the display. Any ideas?
App is now ruined
This used to be the absolute best mapping app. No one came close to its usefulness. Unfortunately, the changes made over the last few years have ruined it. Many of the premium maps that I frequently used have now disappeared or replaced with sub-par in house made maps. I have to receive 3-4 different maps to get the same information that I used to get with just one (Nat Geo). The price has also dramatically increased. Since I now have to get used to looking at a completely different set of maps, put up with their extremely slow map download and higher price, I am just going to switch to a different service (after being a Premium member for 8 years). This app used to be nearly irreplaceable, but not anymore (go try OnX or CalTopo).

Snap to trail function issue
Overall, I like Gaia GPS alot. I’ve been using it regularly for a number of years planning and executing backpacking trips in many remote locations. For the most part, it does what I need it to do. However, one issue I’ve had repeatedly - and this is a BIG problem in my opinion - the “snap to trail” function simply does not work in the backcountry on my iPhone. PLEASE FIX IT !!
(and yes, the app is up to date; I have a reasonably new phone (iPhone 17); and “snap to trail” is selected)

Terrible route builder
Just straight up refuses to snap to roads and trails while in the field, and without super close review of the few routes it successfully builds, you will end up stranded trying to connect two trails across impassable wilderness. Sucks worse than OnX. Only good part is gpx import export.
