Good idea poorly executed

The app had so much potential in theory- if only it worked.

Out of 8 products scanned they didn’t recognise 7 - and these are not obscure items. The one item they did recognise was cathedral city cheese which the app said contains gluten. I checked on the cathedral city website and they say their products do not contain gluten. So even the one product it found was inaccurate. The developers say they have 150,000 items stored in their database, this apparently is just not enough.
Last thing - why do you make it so difficult for us to report an item to you for you to better improve the app. Why do you need my name email etc, surely just sending the product barcode to you is enough for the item to be added? No need to make things complicated and put people off helping improve ur app.
In a nut shell the app is rubbish

Response from developer

Leave Feeback is very easy, please use it. Unlike other apps, you don’t need to login every time you open our app. We need your email to reply the users who need technical assistance or ask for more information. On another hand, the website of Cathedral City can be useful but the law requires to put the “Gluten Free” label on the packaging of every product 🙂 Thanks in advance!

Life saver

A great app I stumbled across it after a year and a half of problems Intaking gluten containing foods , countless episodes of diahorea, stomach pains and bloating and forever checking ingredients lists in supermarkets, last night was one episode too many and after looking up the ingredients of last night’s dinner online heard about a food scanning app and found this one on the App Store what a life saver no checking ingredients lists again and can feel safe in what I buy and eat I only gave 4 stars as it doesn’t recognise barcodes of some popular products other than that great app will keep using

Seriously?

Used it to go through the food in my fridge. Out of 12 items it recognised 1!
It didn’t even recognise Philadelphia Cheese ffs! Seems to me that they’ve brought it to the UK from the US but forgot to update the database to UK foods.
Update: the developers contacted me regarding my review and, and to be honest, were very professional in explaining the current situation with the app. I have therefore updated my review to reflect their professionalism. App is still not great but I guess it will improve with time.

We have items of Philadelphia, but not all. The free app is completely functional, please scan more products 🙂 Our database contains over 150,000 unique food products commonly found in the UK stores. We are adding new products daily. After scan a product not recognized, please use the "Leave Feedback" button. We will receive automatically the barcode number and we will try to check. Thanks in advance!

Baffled...

I've recently joined Coeliac UK. I thought the membership included the app, but the app keeps asking me to buy the full version - but doesn't seem to explain what the full version gives you that the free version doesn't.

Does the full version recognise more products? So far, most things I've tried to find out about have not been recognised. The ones that have been recognised, all say "gluten-free" on their packaging anyway, so an app is not actually needed - I was just trying to find something the app would recognise.

Plus there's another free app from Coeliac UK which I haven't tried.

What is the difference between the three versions (two free and one paid)?

Edit (response to Developer): Apologies for getting your app confused with the Coeliac UK offerings. I've deleted both anyway, as I find most GF foods nowadays are already labelled "Gluten Free" very prominently, and often are all shelved together in a dedicated GF or Free From section in supermarkets.

Our app doesn't have any kind of relationship with the Coeliac UK Foundation.

Didn’t some things, but great customer support 👍

Great concept and and it knew a few items.
The ones it didn’t know, you can click “send feedback” and it sends the company the barcode to update the system.

No UK products

I wish I had known when buying this App
That it hardly recognises any food products in UK - a total waste of money to be honest with you

Thanks for responding to my review above but I have tried every time I go shopping and it has nothing in the shops in Asda or Tesco the two biggest supermarket chains in the UK - I wish you stayed that it was a US product and that it really does
Not work in the UK

Response from developer

If you try the option of search, you'll see that we've tens of thousands of products of Tesco and Asda in our database. Please try the SEARCH (by Product Name, Brand or Category, over 150,000 UK products (85,000 Gluten-Free/Suitable). The question is there is no way to get every single product available in the UK in our database. Every product can have associated a lot of different barcode numbers, so it's very difficult to get every code. For this reason, we have the Search option in the Full version of our app. Other features only available in the paid version that you purchased: - SEARCHABLE LIST OF SAFE/UNSAFE INGREDIENTS - The DISCOVER GLUTEN FREE section is a great way to discover your new gluten free favorites. - DINING CARD / TRAVEL CARDS, to eat safely in restaurants domestically and abroad We really appreciate your feedback about it. Thank you in advance!

They are determined to get your money

This app has a free version which shows you a result for about 1 in 20 items to try and frustrate you into paying for the full version. Probably worth it if you are coeliac yourself (although I’m not certain, as I haven’t used the ‘premium’ version). However if like me you have a coeliac in your wider social circle and just need to query something occasionally, don’t bother. It’ll get on your nerves and you’ll end up checking Google anyway.

It’s not brilliant

It’s says upgrade to have access to many more products but it’s products that are not every day use. A lot of your products you will normally have in are not in the database. Also very confusing about what is gluten free, it’s says it’s lists them and then when you go into the list the product isn’t gluten free. Clarity would be nice!!

On the other hand, please try again the option of SEARCH by Product Name, Brand or Category, over 150,000 products (85,000 Gluten-Free/Suitable), is very useful. Some basic tips about it: · If you’re searching for a specific product without results, try to put only the name of the brand or reduce the number of words. · Enter the name of a brand with the exact name. For example, "Hellmann's". If you put "Hellman" or "Hellmann", it's fine as well. If you put "Hellmanns", the app will be not able to find the products. A lot of users forget to put the simple quote. Have I bought the full version of this App

Hello, I downloaded the App then needed to buy the full version of the App. However I don’t actually know if I have. Can you help?
I do enjoy seeing the big tick and have found the App very useful so far. Thank you, Lynne.

Response from developer

Hello Lynne, glad to know that the app is very useful for you 🙂 When you open the app with the Full version activated, you can see the "SEARCH" option in the first screen. If you can't see it, please contact us at hello@scanglutenfree.com. Thanks in advance!

Fantastic app for coeliacs

I really love this app. Extremely useful as a quick tool while shopping. My son, diagnosed with coeliac disease, loves it as something to keep him busy scanning the barcodes of the products ;) I like that the app not only keeps his awareness high of needing to choose gluten free foods, but also gets excited about finding foods he can eat. I've checked the database, the results are very reliable. The app has saved him from getting sick many times, sometimes it's hard to catch all the Ingredients when reading a label. On another hand, prevented from accidentally eating "hidden gluten" ingredients on more than one occasion. The most useful feature is the search gluten free products (just a recommendation, if you put only one or two words in the search, perhaps you will get better results). Also you can contribute to improve the database of products, if you find a new item labeled as gluten free, not found in the database. Finally, the restaurant card / translated travel cards and the search ingredients can be very useful sometimes. Anyway, if you can, recommended to call before the restaurant and talk with the staff about the coeliac disease condition and to check carefully the gluten free safe options available in the menu, be aware to avoid the cross contamination issues in the kitchen. If you can't make a call, You can show the restaurant card available in the app to the waiter. I thank you so much, to the very bottom of my heart, for making this app!! Keep up the good work!

Thank you very much for your kind words! We really appreciate it ❤ :)

It doesn’t recognise so many popular items.

Try it for yourself, so many popular items come back as not in database.

UPDATE: After your response, I feel I have to reiterate that you aren’t doing enough to be a successful app and it’s disappointing for users. The idea is great. The low scoring feedback is the same critique all too often. You should focus on that rather than responding thinking you can paint over cracks. Check fitnesspals scanner for the direction you should go.

Gluten Free Scan on the go

What a brilliant app. I am newly diagnosed and have removed gluten from my diet. This app makes my shopping trips a lot less hassle. This is my time saver I now don’t have to read every label, it’s all in the app. Thanks for the invention.

Not worth the money

Absolutely shocking! I’ve only managed to find a few things via scanning that I can have, so many things aren’t listed so what’s the point? It constantly comes back with barcode not found!
Not only that but it keeps freezing whilst scanning and today it’s scanned but nothing appears just a blank page! Couldn’t even message the app itself as it wouldn’t send the message! Refund wanted! Very disappointed in what ‘could be’ a fantastic app!

A god send

I’ve been thrown in at the deep end with my daughter having to go gluten free , this app is amazing it’s so helpful.
Yes some items don’t register but generally after reading the packet you can make an informed decision.

Wouldn’t be without this app now .

New coeliac - this app is brilliant!

Started using the app for weekly shops at a variety of supermarkets - has opened up a lot of foods that I had assumed were ‘no-go’ and similarly has saved me from being ‘glutened’ several timed. Now I wouldn’t leave home without it !!!! Great.

Not as good as I thought it would be

My five year old granddaughter has recently been diagnosed with coeliac disease. I’ve joined coeliac uk and downloaded this app as we need all the advice and help we can get.
However, the amount of everyday foods that you scan and get barcode not found is disappointing. For example Kellogg’s cornflakes which she likes to have when she comes to stay as her grandpa eats them.
Hopefully it’s being continually developed and updated.

Free app not good BUT...

Free version isn’t good, but I upgraded to full version & it’s amazing!! Bit slow on scrolling, but what doesn’t scan is generally in the search feature (full version only).

Worth it for a freebie

Our kid just got diagnosed with this; have just checked everything I’ve manually checked. Didn’t recognize the glasses ten stuff; confirmed all the gf stuff and chucked up one as a maybe. Worth it as as as a second opinion
Dev; can I add products to the database? Will be using this a *lot in the coming months

The best shopping buddy

I love this app. It’s so quick and easy to use. It saves so much time when shopping. No more having to read all the ingredients and then still not sure if it’s safe, just scan and put your goodies in the trolley. Wish I’d had it ages ago but glad I’ve got it now.

Response from developer

"The best shopping buddy" is a fantastic way to define our app! thanks so much for your kind words! We really appreciate it ❤ :)

Nice chap but poor app

When you have spent £3.99 on an app you expect it to be fairly functional and intuitive but sadly this isn't the case here! To start with, there are an overwhelming number of five-star reviews, which most look like they were written in order to obtain the app for free! There is no explanation of the difference between 'gluten free' and 'suitable' (whatever that means) and although the chap emailed me back quickly twice when I asked those questions, surely the app should be self-explanatory?! Finally, most of the foods I have tried to scan or manually look up haven't been in the database – Marmite for example is surely a very common product in the UK households? Compared with the Slimming World app and database, it has 1,000,000 miles to go!

Hello, we worked very hard during months to prepare a big update, and this week we've added 100,000 new products to the database. On the other hand, you can see the difference between 'gluten free' and 'suitable' in the FAQ section of the app.
