Drains battery without warning

While the app is great and helps my son tremendously, we are finding that this app has a serious flaw. Every few days, without warning, the app will suddenly consume the iPad battery.

We use an iPad exclusively for GoTalkNow and turn on Guided Access so it is the only app that can be used. Every now and then, the iPad battery drains at an incredible rate, with this app being the only thing on. These drains always occur when the iPad is not in use. Looking at the battery plot from the past 24 hours shows a drop from 75% to 0 in the span of about 4 hours each time, starting with a sudden spike in GoTalkNow activity. This often occurs in the middle of the night!

For a $100 app, this flaw is quite infuriating...

Updated version gone bad. Help

The app is awesome but the only reason why I gave it one star is because I purchased GoTalk for my son 3 years ago, an update was done on my app and I saw the new downloads available so I downloaded the 36 core words and added to my book BUT now I lost all of my sons original pictures and text to voice. Every time I open the app it only takes me directly to the core words and I can’t even edit any pages. I’m so upset because this wasn’t a cheap app and now how in the world can my son communicate. If anyone can offer help on how to reverse this to my original app I would be most appreciative.

Save messages. Please!

I am impressed by the Go Talk Now app and have prepared a 20 page book for use with my 30 year old son who has autism. I am wondering if anyone has ever requested the ability to review messages written from express pages? A "sticky" page to save messages to would be a tremendous addition to this app.

Also, some of us might want to use your keyboard page to write short paragraphs and save these.
The saved messages page should be the size of a regular page, maybe even be able to be scrolled down. It would make Go Talk far more useful for AAC users with autism who are moving from PECS to an iPad.
Otherwise, I love the range of symbol and picture library options available in GoTalk, the inclusion of scenes pages and the ease with which a communication book can be built and shared. The synthesised voices are of excellent quality.

Communication tool, but awesome for social & Modeling skills

Go Talk Now is an easily programmable communication app for sure. Updating buttons is quick and there are video guides to show how-to's of creating books, even a free lite version to trial it.
What I really I love is how this app can be more than just a traditional communication app. GTN can be used to reinforce learning new skills or to offer motivating rewards by inserting short video clips from the iPad camera roll. GTN gives a nonverbal individual the opportunity to "tell" others about an activity through a unique communication book you create for the activity.

I easily create communication books of different themes that show our teenager the "how to's" of her in various activities by storing a short video clip. Watching herself in an activity is rewarding and reinforces skills. I created an entertainment book of music video downloads to watch while on the treadmill to motivate her workouts.

Attainment Co. has a few YouTube videos sharing creative uses for GTN as well as details of creating books: steps to back up communication books; using a GTN in a community outing situation to mini golf and then "tell other" about the activity etc.
On my wish list for GTN is an easier way to backup communication books of more than 5 pages at a time for an iPad 2.
Attainment Co. Is usually pretty responsive when a glitch occurs after OS updates.
I found a new feature that I like of being able to crop icon images.

Great purchase for therapists using speech generating devices

I have thoroughly enjoyed learning (and continue learning) how to incorporate the Go-Talk-Now with a range of AT students in the public school setting. Originally, I had download Go-Talk-Now when it was in version 3.5.11 (November 2012) and have seen many helpful additions in its features to make this product a worthy purchase for non-verbal students, children with emerging verbal skills, and students with apraxia.

The programming process is very accessible for both new therapists and experienced therapists who have developed communication systems with other devices. More importantly, Go-Talk-Now’s user manual and help guide is structured well to navigate through.

If you are looking for an app with high quality speech generating capabilities for students on the spectrum, GTN also has video modeling features. (Probably the most beneficial feature for our kids needing high quality “video replays” of actions that we want them to remember).

This company has really set-up their settings page well for those who need to locate different control features. For my student’s with cerebral palsy, I like to use the “touch up” activation feature for buttons. (My experience is that kids with less control in hand coordination [shaky placement while pointing at smaller icons] are able to better trigger icons without as many misfires when the icons activate at the release of the touch-up movement rather than with the “touch-down” activation feature. Thumbs up to the Go Talk Company for making sure this feature got programmed into their software. If misfiring selections (icons next to the desired word) is an ongoing discouragement that one of your kids is experiencing, I also suggest looking at the “debounce” feature housed under the accessibility area. With this, you can set duration lengths (i.g., how long it takes before another icon to be triggered) before selecting another button.

Another feature is the company’s addition to support upcoming scanning devices while deciding if you want to direct your scan direct via left-right rows or by up-down column. At my school, we are able to incorporate the “Bluetooth Switch” (it has 6-ports) by using the “space” and “enter” ports to scan through icons. (I have not yet practice this with the predictive keyboard page, but I hope that it will easy scan through with QWERTY efficiently).

Keep up the good work Attainment Company!

Excellent Program (With Solvable Problem)

Great, uncomplicated, easy-to-use, customizable AAC program with good, clear voices (extra, relatively minimal purchase), easy set-up and organization---and somewhat limited upload to private/public "galleries" of single or multiple sets (up to five "pages") of your boards., Go Talk's easy facility for choosing internet images to supplement each button on a board does not limit the DATA size of any of its internet images. Although you may easily resize an enormous image to fit on a button, it remains densely data-rich. --Create boards full of these images, and they will either take forever to upload (to mail or transfer to the "Gallery"), or occasionally crash. It's wonderful to have a resident facility for accessing net images; however, an improvement might be continued access (to find pictures the excellent resident Go Talk library is missing) with a self-limiting picture "data size" utility. One must be careful of overloading this excellent program with (e.g.) too many voices, too many pictures, etc.. In my experience--with Go Talk library images (and a smaller data load), the program's boards transfer quickly and efficiently. AAC is inherently clunky, and for moderate users, this is wonderful program which, with a little creative thinking, even inspires novel therapeutic scenarios. (I'm an SLP, relatively inexperienced with AAC. And this program is my own "educational opportunity"...so I am very pleased with it. (Thanks to Attainment for creating it!)

Not great anymore

Cannot even open. It keeps crashing now :(

Update is terrible

The July 25th update has been a nightmare for using this app with scanning. It worked fine until the update. I called tech support for the app and the tech person said it was the switch I was using (RJ Cooper) and not the app. I was about ready to get a new switch when I decided to test it on one of my client's device who still hadn't done the update. It worked perfectly so obviously it is not the switch, it IS the update as I had suspected. I'm so angry that I can't go back to the previous version on my device! Please fix this horrible update!!

Love it!!! Thank you for the improvements!!!!

I love the ten second debounce time. This is the best app ever. Thank you for listening to parents of the users and making improvements. I also love the 2 button option.

Great Communication App

The only complaint I have is that going from 4 buttons to 9 is too much. I wish there were options for 6 buttons! Otherwise this is a fantastic app for communication! It has made it so much easier for my daughter to communicate what she wants or how she feels with just simple touching! And I love the feature of being able to add anyone's voice to it! Highly recommend this app for anyone with kids who have problems communicating in any way!

Great Communication App!

We purchased GoTalkNow to replace another app we had , which was really expensive and clunky to use. I was able to make multiple screens that my son can use at both school and home.I have also made starter pages for his teachers as well, REALLY easy to use. He ad his teachers no longer have to navigate through page after page of icons. I also like that you can link video to the buttons for reinforcement. You can set it up so kids can't just click out of the app as well, how great is that!?! Oh, and they are out of Wisconsin and have VERY helpful tech support, VERY helpful…. Can't stress how happy we are with it.

Awesome!

Great app! Wish there were more online templates though but with a little time and effort involved in the creation process this device works amazingly for our non verbal clients!

Seeing these bad reviews upset me. Contact the company, they have been so helpful. All of the bad reviews areactually due to your settings, they will help you to get the app working the way you want it to. They are very understanding people. Don't just give bad reviews before trying to figure out a solution. This app has been a God-sent to my son and our family. I hope many of you contact the company and understand the app as we have. Great App!

Just like the other reviewers say...

I am the Father of a severely disabled Child, I was told that this program is unbeatable to aid in learning...perhaps...if it worked.
After getting our Money, and the developer reads these reviews, I am assuming that the developer might fix this? I can't even import a photo from my Library without crashing this Software...Strange thing is? The FREE Version works. Limited, but it at least works.
So to the Developer...when customers give you Big Money, and this isn't cheap at $80.00...try making the paid one work too?
Until a fix, we simply suffer and look for alternatives. And Yes, I have the Newest iPad, fully loaded, and updated...Fix you mistakes!

Fix

Excellent app but every time you use the arrow keys to turn the page the keyboard comes up. This distracts my child using this app and makes it worthless. Please fix it ! I payed a lot of money for this

Very intuitive app, great value

We have several expensive AAC apps for our daughter, who has profound communication disabilities caused by Angelman Syndrome. This app has an awesome combination of features that has led us to now just use GoTalk NOW. Incorporating video and scene displays into her AAC app makes the communication itself the motivator. This app gives my daughter the ability, for example, to tell us about her favorite singers or what she did at camp and then SHOW us too, without leaving the app. We've hesitated to make an iPad a designated speech device because our daughter uses her videos and camera roll so extensively. The video and scene display features are unique with this app.

I love the new sentence strip option so you can build a phrase over multiple pages. I love how the pages link but you can also browse through your pages rather than only being able to access pages by following the bread crumbs of how they are linked. I love how attractive and appealing the pages are. The option to purchase SymbolStix solved many problems for me. I just wish Boardmaker would sell its symbols too!

For us, what matters most is that it's easy to program. The best AAC app is worthless if no one can program it. The ease of sharing communication books between iPads and the ease of adding pages and symbols makes this app amazing. It is simply the best value with some of the best features of far more expensive apps. This app is a real game changer for us in how we can communicate with our daughter.

Would like it IF it worked.

I am an SLP that works with preschoolers with special needs and my facility was excited to download this app since we are getting many more children needing the use of visual communication and AAC devices. There has been an influx of parents purchasing iPads for their children, especially ones with Autism. Being that I'm on of the more tech savvy SLPs at our facility, the staff looked to me to really test out the product.

I was really excited to use an app that is similar to the Go-Talk 9 and 20 devices, but I have come to find out that the app itself keeps glitching and getting stuck on the one page that I started to create. I can no longer navigate to the Home Page - or any other page for that matter. When I press the buttons, the page flashes as if to proceed with the command, but instead it stays on that page and allows me to go no where else. And, like I said, I can't even get back to the home page - I say this again because I feel it needs to be reiterated.

YES, I have deleted the app off my device MULTIPLE times and reinstalled it MULTIPLE times and I am able to use it fine once or twice and then the problem happens all over again each time. This is extremely frustrating. I have also restored the iPad to its original settings and STILL had the same problem. What's even worse for me, though, is that I have sent an e-mail to Attainment Company asking for some troubleshooting advice and have yet to hear ANY sort of response back. I have emailed other companies and have never waited longer than a day or two to receive a real-person response. I am very disappointed that this company isn't taking more of a proactive role in helping their customers out, ESPECIALLY since their customers are either parents of children with special needs or professionals working in the field that truly need and could benefit from their product.

Still waiting on a response... Hopefully this review will spark their interest and finally motivate them to help me (and my facility) and provide some useful information.
