At the start of the 20th century, the battleship was the most important vessel in the fleet. The advent of the dreadnought in 1906 gave the battleship even more strategic power. It reigned supreme during the Great War, but started to relinquish its dominance in the middle of World War II when the aircraft carrier became the capital ship. The end of the 1950s brought about the demise of the gun-armed battlecruisers and heavy cruisers. In the following decades, protecting the carrier from aerial and submarine attacks required more and more naval assets: guided missile cruisers and destroyers, anti-submarine warfare destroyers and frigates and nuclear-powered attack submarines. The aircraft carriers continued their dominance throughout the Cold War and retain it today, although most modern navies now centre around smaller vessels, such as amphibious warfare ships, destroyers, frigates and corvettes. The arms race of the Cold War also gave birth to the ballistic missile submarine which remains a potent threat thanks to its nuclear deterrence capability.
