What's New in imiwa?

5.1.0

July 11, 2026

New ways to study, find kanji, and copy what you need — plus a cleaner interface throughout. KANJI KENTEI (KANKEN), BUILT IN Study for the Japanese Kanji Aptitude Test with dedicated Kanken level lists and flashcard decks for all twelve levels — plus a new Kanken widget so today's character is always one glance away. YOJI JUKUGO Explore Japan's very cool four-character idioms (七顛八起、一石二鳥...) with a new browsable Yoji Jukugo collection and a matching flashcard deck, right alongside your other Learn tab tools. FOUR CORNER CODE SEARCH Look up kanji the traditional way. A new Four Corner search adds an intuitive quadrant-assembly picker, so you can find the character you're after by shape alone. LOOKUP AS YOU COPY (old feature reintegrated by popular demand) Turn on auto-lookup in Settings and imiwa? will look up Japanese text the moment you copy it in any other app on your device — no need to switch apps or paste it in yourself. COPY, SPEAK, SHARE Every piece of dictionary text now has its own Copy, Copy and Add, Speak, and Share menu, so you can act on exactly the word or meaning you tapped — nothing else. FLASHCARDS See the reading right on the front of the card, and grade cards from the front side with a swipe without flipping first. Watch the details appear as you swipe the card away KANJI Choose which foreign readings are displayed. AND SEVERAL FIXES We listen to your feedback: corrected verb search matching, restored proper romaji and furigana behavior for alternate spellings, darkened handwriting guide lines for better visibility, and a few adjustments for large accessibility fonts.

Simply the best

Imiwa a toujours été très utile au Japon, bien mieux que d'autres applis, par son interface et ses fonctions.

Pas encore vraiment testé la version 5, mais à priori, elle semble être une amélioration majeure.

Auto Clipboard Look-up doesn’t work IOS

The dev seemed to try and add this feature back but it doesn’t even work. It’s like they didn’t bother to test it, it says “imiwa? pasted from application” but the text isn’t entered into the search bar just a total development failure bug where the testing was clearly not done. Like you still have to click the copy paste button. The old version it just lightning fast instantly searched whatever was in the clipboard without any button press.

酷くなった

何年も前からこの辞書で勉強していたんですけど今はバグだらけで遅い。気に入りリストは使えにくくてアニメーションは壊れているようです。今日は言葉をリストに追加するのはできなくなった。

Ruined by the 2026 Update

I used to really like imiwa. It was my go to Japanese dictionary app. Offline, fast lookups, good kanji resources, example sentences, the works. I used it all the time.

Then it auto updated in July 2026 and now it’s trash. ABSOLUTE TRASH!
The new layout looks bad and is not intuitive to use. Search is messed up, it stutters when you scroll, and stuff like the clipboard auto search is gone. I have to tap around just to do basic things that used to be instant.

I turned off auto app updates I was so mad.

A bunch of other people are saying the same thing because it is vibe coded garbage.

Bring back the old app!!

Old version was better

I’ve been using this app for over 10 years and loved it for its simplicity. This new version just seems way overcomplicated. Everything takes way longer than it used too and is way more fiddly :(
