Edits are applied non-destructively using Apple Photos technology, so your original is never lost and any change can be reverted at any time, directly in Photos. Deleted photos go to Recently Deleted, where they can be recovered for 30 days. Some editing apps rewrite a photo's metadata, which makes automatic matching impossible.
