What's New in IoT Assistant

2.1.0

June 3, 2026

This new version enables users to access more details about IoT resources and their data practices, including their AI practices. A second mechanism to support the submission of privacy requests ("privacy options") has been introduced. It works using the email address publicized by the resource owner for the submission of privacy requests. The IoT assistant app generates a carefully crafted email draft for that privacy request (e.g., CCPA opt-out, deletion, request for a copy of one's data). The user can review the email request within their email client and submit the email by simply clicking "send." We have also enhanced some security features, including the ability to login using FaceID.

Love the new design!

Seems like the devs worked out the bugs from previous versions of the app. Seems extremely buttery now.

Interesting idea, poor data

This is a very interesting idea and I had high hopes for it. However its data is extremely limited. Many times I have walked around Washington DC metro area and found surveillance cameras which this app has no idea about. The information seems quite dated and very limited.

Response from developer

We're glad you like the app. Our IoT portal (https://iotprivacy.io) currently hosts around 150,000 IoT resource descriptions, including tens of thousands of cameras. It's important to understand that this information is crowdsourced. As more volunteers set up accounts on our portal and enter more IoT resource descriptions, you will be able to discover more resources. Today already, if you are in a city, you will often find dozens of nearby IoT resource descriptions.

The web app + buttons do nothing

There’s no way to leave feedback in the app or report problems with it.

Help

I just down loaded the app. I created an account, answered all the questions and read all the policies. When it goes to the web page i get—ERROR . I go back a page and asked to go through the same process kust to go to the web sit and get —ERROR again. Can you help me ?

Response from developer

We are sorry about the problem you experience with our app! To better help you, could you please provide us more details of the “ERROR” that you get on your phone? Feel free to send us additional details or screenshots of the ERROR at iotpiteam@andrew.cmu.edu. We’d love to help you and figure out what went wrong. Thank you for providing the feedback! -- IoT Privacy Infrastructure team

Interesting idea

The idea of the app is interesting, but it’s weird that I can’t add my device through the app…but the app is good though
