About

iPhonotype is a mobile plant phenotyping app for researchers, labs, growers, and controlled-environment workflows, or just plant lovers. Capture structured plant datasets directly on iPhone, organize them into experiments, and export scans for downstream analysis with the macOS companion app. Use iPhonotype to record 3D plant scans, top-view phenotyping sessions, root imaging datasets, environmental light measurements, and leaf reflectance readings from a single mobile workflow. Version 2.0 expands the 3D workflow with on-device Gaussian splat capture, training, viewing, and scan libraries. Gaussian splatting can help preserve fine plant details that are difficult to recover with photogrammetry alone, including thin branches, petioles, leaf edges, gaps, and internal plant structure. iPhonotype supports LiDAR-assisted and camera-only capture, direct USB-C external SSD recording on supported iPhones, packaged scan sessions, on-device trait analysis, flower and fruit candidate detection, phenotyping exports, and handoff to the free iPhonotype macOS companion for deeper reconstruction and analysis. The macOS main app download link is available on the website. iPhonotype is built for traceable scientific imaging workflows where organized data capture, repeatable measurements, and flexible analysis matter. It can also be used to scan houseplants, garden plants, objects, and complex biological structures in 3D. Use iPhonotype to: • 3D plant scanning and packaged capture sessions • Root capture workflows for dishes, videos, and scanner-style datasets • Environmental light and leaf reflectance measurements • 2D phenotyping workflows for foliage, seed lots, and fruit lots • On-device organization of experiments, sessions, and packaged results • Sync and handoff to iPhonotype Mac Studio for deeper desktop analysis (visit our website for more info). iPhonotype is built specially for scientific imaging workflows where traceable capture, organized data packaging, and flexible downstream analysis matter. However, anyone can use it to scan their houseplants or objects, and even export a 3D-printable file for multi-color representation.

What's New in iPhonotype

2.0.2

August 3, 2026

• Adds a dedicated Calibration Target capture template with guided acquisition and on-device quality feedback. • Adds preliminary on-device cylindrical reconstruction for root-tube captures with pixel-aligned unwrap, support, candidate mask, overlay, and skeleton evidence. • Fixes an issue that could incorrectly report zero usable root-tube wall views even when a complete capture was available. • Simplifies setup by allowing each capture template to select the appropriate scanning workflow automatically. • Keeps optional QR scale calibration off by default and removes the automatic pre-scan color-target prompt. • Refines multi-plant separation controls and on-device post-processing. • Improves reconstruction readiness checks, package compatibility, stability, and interface clarity.
