Cute and with more freedom than Duolingo

This app and hiragana sensei helped me finally learn after so long. Its cute and there are no ads. You can test whatever group of characters you want. I’m also learning more words I can practice often like what’s in your bedroom and I can choose to learn colours and so on. Duolingo is a good app but I prefer this for my early level. My only request is to change the message at the end of each lesson from “try harder next time!” to something like “keep going!” or something, as it is sorts of annoying. I super highly recommend these apps for learning hiragana and katakana when you’ve failed so much before.

the sound does not work

it’s all silent

カタカナ せんせい

I enjoy learning tons of Katakana from Katakana Sensei, who helps me fix mistakes and get better! 😊📘

I love this app! It helped me learn a lot of katakana. It shows me all the important things I need to know. I recommend this a lot!

Great app, just a couple of suggestions…

This app is great, though, something is missing to make it an amazing app, and I think that a drawing pad would be a great idea to practice writing katakana and learn the stroke order, rather than just reading. A practice area for familiarising yourself with katakana before going straight into the test would be really helpful for newer Japanese learners. Overall, I highly recommend this app for people who are already familiar with katakana and want something to test them on their skills and refresh their memory.

Not for ipads

Its good but its for phones only it wont take the full screen of an ipad and its kinda frustrating not being able to have cover the full screen like hiragana sensei does

amazing

When i started using this app, i already knew all hiragana, but i was finding it EXTREMELY difficult to learn katakana. But when i found this app, i was able to learn around 25 characters in 1 day. This app is no joke. I highly recommend this.

Me encanta!

Espero que mucha gente que empiece en el japonés encuentre esta app, 100% recomendada.. AMAZING!

Good but…

I really like this app, but my sound isn’t working correctly! I have an Iphone 7, so maybe it’s my phone? I cannot heart what the character sounds like so I just have to guess. It only plays after I press the correct answer, I don’t know if it’s supposed to do that or not.

Pros:
-Cute
-Accurate

Cons:
-Can’t hear
-Testing your knowledge

Overall, I say three stars, horrible for beginners but pretty good if you have some knowledge in Katakana.

Very cute

I thought the app was very cute if you're just testing your knowledge on katakana, I didn't really like the learning interface but it was still fun to use.

Easy and fun

This app helped me learn Katakana in a few hours - it’s so easy, fun, and addictive!

The twin Hiragana and Katakana Sensei apps are the only ones out there that go beyond just quizzing you on individual letters, but let you actually drill whole words (Kotoba) - this invaluable advantage puts them ahead of all the rest.

It’s a shame that the new combined app is only for iOS 13, as I’m unable to continue with the programme without upgrading my iPhone!

Response from developer

Thanks for the review! We're sorry it's difficult for us to manage older versions of iOS. We say you should treat yourself to a new phone! 🎉👍

Excellent app!!

I really enjoy the drawing and the lessons

Mostly good

As others have stated, there are small errors. For example, “デパートー”. Translated to romaji, it should be depaatoo. It consistently told me I was wrong until I wrote depaato, despite its own instruction down below that says to use double consonants for the long vowels represented with “ー”. Either the katakana or romaji was programmed incorrectly (I’m not sure which at my current level)

Great! But Sound doesn’t work for me

I love this app! Super simple to use, clean interface, and very informative. My only issue is that I can no longer hear the characters so it’s difficult for me to complete lessons. Please look into this for me! I’d love to continue using your app

thank you for your hard work!!

hello, i wanted to say thank you for the work you put into these apps they have really helped me learn!! they basically taught me how to read hiragana and i’m starting katakana sensei right now! i just had a suggestion if you would consider it, i personally still get a few characters in hiragana mixed up and i feel like if we had the option to match the katakana to the hiragana in this app it would be more helpful to remember the hiragana we’ve learned. of course the romanji versions should stay i just wanted to say having the option to choose between romanji and hiragana would be very helpful!! thank you and i hope you have a nice day!

Response from developer

Thank you for the review and feedback and sorry for the late reply! We've been hard at work rebuilding Hiragana and Katakana Sensei into the same app - JLRPG Quest The new JLRPG Quest app will let you continue practicing both and we hope to add more content including kanji as we go. ありがとう! and stay safe out there!

Great app but some small errors

It’s a really great app and I loved it just like Hiragana Sensei. But this one still has a lot of mistakes (wrong translations in the kotoba challenges, and the middle challenges have kanas you haven’t learned yet). I hope they’ll be fixed soon. It would be great to have “kotoba study” feature just like Hiragana Sensei

its really good but i had a problem

it was really good and im still using it to this day! but when i go back to the first kotoba challenge it gives words that haven’t appeared yet between a-to which is kind of confusing.

Decent, but answers don’t match up at times.

It was a pretty good app up until the point where, during the reading sections where they want you to spell out the romaji, I was spelling it out perfectly to match the Katakana and yet was getting told my answer was wrong. I ended up looking some of these words up, and realized it was actually the app that was wrong. If those things were to be fixed, it could be very helpful, but unfortunately once you get to a certain point you just hit a wall due to the fact that the answers don’t match up with the drills properly.

Okay

The app isn’t that bad overall. But for the Kotoba challenges it doesn’t make sense because it tells me to type the letters the character represents and im sure my answer is correct but it keeps saying its incorrect??
