Great app
Been using this app for years now. It's a great reference for identifying and classifying different steels (not just for knives) from across the globe.
Is the app still being updated?
App is awesome but some relatively newer steels have not been added and the entries don’t seem to have been updated at all in like 4 years.
Very Helpful App
This app is very good for somebody who wants to be able to look up a kind of steel without having to go and search for. The only thing that had had was a way to compare different deals side-by-side. Considering it’s free there’s gotta be some give.

I use this to learn and also judge my next purchases by. If you like blades of any kind. This is a must have app. I have collected knives for almost 50 years. I will open the app during a layover or waiting on a customer for a meeting. I learn something every time I open it up.

Extremely helpful
This app is awesome. I don’t even make knives or swords (yet) so it’s not only for those guys, i’m interested in the many steels available to us today for knife and especially sword making! This app has it all, the chemical makeup that a lot of us enthusiasts like to nerd out on, in search for the “perfect” steel(even though it doesn’t exist because it’s relative to your use and application of the steel so what’s “perfect” for one application wouldn’t be for another). Hence the need for such an app! To decipher what steels are best for what type of blades etc. Just get it! You will enjoy it if you have EVER looked up a steel’s composition, or if not, you can start now with this app! Here’s to your knowledge.

Exactly what I was looking for: a way to quickly read up on a knife steel alloy. Simple, useful, thank you! Only gripe: maybe remove the large ingredient/chemical (?) list for each steel at the forefront, and maybe move it all elsewhere via a link, etc. Most users id imagine are not chemists or steel workers. Maybe have facts listed for knife collectors, and pics of the steel in different knives etc

Absolutely awesome for anyone interested in knife steels.
Fantastic for anyone who is just beginning to learn about knife steels and their properties; right through to blade steel engineering and metallurgy.
I have been learning about knife steel properties, blade metallurgy and blade forging as a hobby/interest for a few years now; and thanks to the legendary Knife Steel Nerd himself (Dr Larrin Thomas) I’ve learned enough metallurgy to get a good idea of potential blade steel properties through just learning their composition.
So every time I hear about a blade steel I’ve always had to search my browser, writing the steel’s name and “steel composition” (so much so I made a keyboard shortcut).
But then I usually have to search through many rubbish advertising websites (that Google and Bing always put first through ad payments) with rubbish knife steel articles written by 2nd/3rd world marketing people with terrible English, who just copy and poorly rewrite all their information from other sources, adding their own poorly written flair to pad out the rubbish articles as much as possible, often turning the few remaining correct details they had into rubbish.
For whatever backwards advertising reasons Bing and Google algorithms have begun putting them at the top of every search, usually covering at least the first page for me now. So in a hurry it takes some time to find the information that may or may not even be correct.
Since I found out the ZKnives website I’ve been looking for results in that, but it’s never on the first search results page, and I can never find it in my favourites/bookmarks etc. and I’m usually in a hurry (but for the record the ZKnives website is also AMAZING although can be a little difficult to navigate on my phone).
So I heard about and downloaded this app a while ago but forgot about it. I just used it now to compare the material compositions of several different blade steels (both separately and together), and I was done in seconds, user friendly as you like with zero rubbish.
This may be my new favourite app, and I sincerely thank the legends who created it!

This app is such a great idea! I am always searching online about knife steels, and the fact that this app aggregates all this information in one place is excellent. The app is well-built and coded decently. The focus is definitely on the info, though.

There are so many steels that companies try to pass off as “great knife steel!” But the real story of alloys can be quite different when you can go to a reference for the real story.

Pretty good, but…
The list of steals is fairly comprehensive and covers most of what knife makers would want to know in relation to the composition. However, I would’ve given it five stars if it actually included heat treat information as well.
