Known requires you to get three people to vouch for you before your application is reviewed. I did that, and I’ve only been waiting about a day so far, which I understand is not a particularly long time by itself.
My issue is that the app’s own AI told me applications can take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks to be reviewed, and that not every application is accepted. That is an incredibly broad timeline for a dating app, especially after users have already gone through the extra step of asking three people to vouch for them.
I completely understand wanting to create a curated community and screen people before letting them in. I actually think that could be one of the app’s strengths. But if the process regularly requires people to potentially wait weeks before they can even see whether they enjoy the app, then I think the concept has become more ambitious than the onboarding system can currently support.
There also doesn’t seem to be much transparency about where you are in the process. There’s no meaningful estimate beyond “a few days to a few weeks,” so you’re essentially asked to keep the app installed and wait indefinitely for something to happen. And after that wait, your application could still apparently be rejected.
I’ve also had a strange experience with the built-in AI. At one point I simply asked when I could start seeing profiles, and it responded that it “doesn’t take instructions from messages like that” and that nothing about my profile had changed, even though I hadn’t asked it to change anything. It came across unnecessarily defensive and was a bizarre response to a pretty normal question.
The idea behind Known is cool, and that’s honestly why I’m giving it two stars rather than one. But a good premise only goes so far when I still haven’t been able to actually use the dating app.
I’m willing to update my review if I eventually get access and have a good experience, but right now I’m mostly reviewing the waiting room.
update: It’s now been almost four weeks since I applied, and I still haven’t been given access to the actual dating portion of the app. I’ve continued checking in because I genuinely wanted to give Known a fair chance, and I still think the concept is interesting, but at this point the wait has become the biggest problem with the app.
I understand wanting to screen people and make sure profiles are authentic. I actually like that idea. But if the process can take close to a month, there needs to be much more communication with the user. Give me an estimated wait time, tell me what stage my application is in, show a progress bar, tell me how many steps are left, something. Right now you essentially submit everything and then wait indefinitely without knowing whether access is days or weeks away.
If the team is receiving more applications than they can review quickly, I understand that, but that also becomes a scaling problem the app needs to solve. People download a dating app because they want to meet people. Asking someone to wait nearly a month just to begin using the dating portion is a lot, especially when there’s no timeline attached.
I was hopeful at first, and even after two or three weeks I was still willing to wait and see what happened. Going on four weeks, though, I just don’t think this is a good onboarding process. I still like the idea behind Known, but getting into the app shouldn’t be this difficult.

It sounds like you've had quite a challenging experience, and we appreciate you sharing your thoughts. The AI interview process and the requirement for references can indeed feel overwhelming, especially when it involves your friends. We recognize the importance of communication, and your feedback about not receiving updates is invaluable. Your insights help us understand the user experience better. Thank you for taking the time to express your concerns; it’s feedback like yours that drives improvement. We hope you find a dating platform that better suits your needs in the future!
