About

Hear a call. Name the bird. You're climbing Ruapehu, or walking through Abel Tasman, or camped somewhere on the coast... and something calls from the canopy. You stop. What is that? Koekoe trains your ear so you always know. HOW IT WORKS Listen to a real field recording, then pick the right bird from four options. Get it right and the card gets easier. Get it wrong and it comes back sooner. Over time, the 28 species in the app become as familiar as old friends. WHAT YOU'LL LEARN Tūī. Bellbird. Kōkako. Kea. Kākāpō. Grey warbler. Morepork. All 28 NZ native birds, including the rarer ones most people couldn't name. Learn to hear the difference between the cascading notes of a tūī and the liquid bells of a korimako. Birds in Koekoe: Tūī · Bellbird / Korimako · Kōkako · Morepork / Ruru · Kea · Kākā · Kākāpō · Kākāriki · Kererū · North Island Fantail · Grey Warbler · Whitehead · Tomtit · Yellowhead · Hihi / Stitchbird · Silvereye · North Island Robin · North Island Saddleback · South Island Saddleback · North Island Brown Kiwi · North Island Weka · Takahē · Australasian Bittern · NZ Dotterel · Paradise Duck · NZ Falcon · Blue Duck / Whio · Yellow-eyed Penguin WORKS IN THE BUSH No internet required. 1.1.1

Fixed: your XP now updates on Home the moment you exit a session early: no more waiting for a refresh to see progress you've already earned. Also: layouts tuned for iPhone, with iPad support on the way. Bird lore corner: the app's name comes from a whakataukī (Māori proverb) "E koekoe te tūī, e ketekete te kākā, e kūkū te kererū": the tūī chatters, the kākā cackles, the kererū coos. It's a saying about how every voice is different, and that's a strength, not a flaw, which is more or less what this whole app is asking you to learn to hear.
