Well designed & no-nonsense app for everyday practice

I have been looking for a daily learning resource for the levantine dialect for a while and Learn Levantine Arabic does not disappoint.
The design is minimalist and beautiful, which makes it easy to focus on the learning process. With regard to the contents, I look forward to future updates! My only suggestion would be to add a user dictionary that can be edited via the browser and added to the flash cards.
I purchased the full version, which is the best choice if you want to use it for your studies.
It’s priced very fair for the amount of resources it provides.

I think I need to have an idea of the alphabet to get started

bad new update

this has always been one of my go-to resources for Levantine Arabic as a dictionary.

the new update not only hides the dictionary behind another button, but you try to scroll through it and it wants you to subscribe, so you're effectively locked out of reading the dictionary unless you know exactly what you're looking for.

imagine trying to read a physical dictionary and you go to page 3 but you need to buy the whole websters 12 book collection to read the words on one single page...

also the app now feels suspiciously vibe-coded (the first update had all white text on white background making everything invisible) which i hope is not the case. i preferred the older, jenkier version that just worked. the UI design overall feels not intuitive, and now very obviously funnels you to the lessons, some of which don't even work anymore (youtube video links broken/deleted). i just want a dictionary honestly, so making the main feature hidden seems like a huge step backward.

i know it's tough to build an app and to monetize it, but this feels really bad and doesn't encourage me to subscribe at all. i hope this is just a phase and it gets rolled back or something improves. sad to see this app degrade so much.

Response from developer

Hi, please could you email mail@learnlevantine.com . You shouldn’t be unable to access the dictionary that’s a bug and I can restore your access if you let me know your email address. Sorry about that! It would be great to hear your suggestions to for how I can bring the dictionary back front and center too. Thanks!

wonderful! only one qualm.

Can’t see any thing on the new update. everything is whited out and can’t read. plead fix or change the letters to black

Response from developer

Hi, sorry about that I should have fixed that issue in update 5.01. Could you check if it worked and please email me at mail@learnlevantine.com

Keeping up with Levantine

I forgot how I found out about this app but it’s all I can ask and more to refresh my memory when it comes to words in Levantine. Also, it’s the first dictionary EVER which allows you to add new words, which I do constantly. I work and interact with people from Syria to Lebanon to Egypt and so many have different ways to say the same expression, and I need to record all of these for research purposes. Thanks Timothy for the quick responses and for being so helpful. Great app.

wonderful! only one qualm.

this app is so effective and i have the full version as well! the only thing i kinda wish it had was a way to slow down the translation. but other than that its wonderful :)! shukran

Can’t start some exercises

I can’t start some exercises because I have to pay… the second I touch my screen the add pops up and I can’t click on start! It’s weird but I’m sure it’s a bug. I’m on IPhone. I’m talking about early levels like greeting.

This is the one.

Thank you for creating this.

Greedy subscription

The price is $10 a month and $50 a year. Be warned!

Response from developer

Hi Monica, sorry if you found the pricing of the app expensive. We give users 7 days for free to try the app and see if it’s useful before they ever have to pay. We are adding in many new features to make it worth it :)

Needs improvements

I expected it to have real voice of someone from the levantine pronouncing the words. But it ended up being a machine voice that sounded so fake and different from real levantine arabic as arab myself.

Helpful, but needs more words

Very helpful, especially the audio for words. However, many words still aren’t available and relies on web search

Not bad

The voice assist says the phrases incorrectly in some cases unfortunately. I would run it by a native speaker where you’re unsure

So many resources in one!

I’ve been trying to learn Levantine Arabic for months and until I found this app, I’ve had to study from so many different sources — Preply, Mango, Duolingo, YouTube, Alif — just to name a few. And they were all missing things I needed. But this app gives you all the tools you could need for learning the language! I love it, and considering a physical Levantine dictionary would have cost me $30, getting the full version of this app for $9.99 is a steal!

I especially love the newer feature ‘Resources’ that introduces stories and practice conversations.

Perfect for learning Levantine Arabic

This is a great app for learning how to speak Levantine Arabic. Thank you devs.

Response from developer

Thank you very much that’s great to hear. I just work on the app myself so it’s great to know that you find it useful! There’s a big update coming soon to the app with a new Lessons section so I hope that will bring you benefit too! Timothy

App is good but majority of the words are not pronounced properly

I speak Egyptian Dialect and fusha and wanted to learn some phrases etc as I watch a lot of levantine series. After purchasing it the dictionary is good, the range of vocabulary etc but the pronunciation of the words are not right on most of the audios. As I am already an Arabic speaker I can differentiate between the errors but a non speaking person will not be able to. The written vowels are quite accurate but the voice pronounces it wrong because it is more like an AI and not recorded by a native speaker. That’s the only reason why I am giving it 4 stars.

Best Levantine App

This app is literally so good. I HIGHLY recommend paying for the full version too, literally only $10 and it gives you so much more access. It gives you the plurals for verbs and some nouns, and in their recent update it breaks down and shows which words belong to which dialect. Native speakers can also add to it helping increase its dictionary. I can’t even explain all the benefits this app has in one message. It even offers an insanely useful phrasebook with practice sentences and story resources that are beneficial for listening and reading. I’m literally in love with this app and have been using it since December 2023.
