Played for about two months so and love it

GREAT free to play game. Tons of cards and plenty of free/easy to get materials to craft cards you want. Join a clan asap and you can get materials easily.

The gameplay is fantastic and you can make the same Spellslingers/planeswalkers play a variety of decks. Matchmaking is quick and fun. The actual strategies are way more fun than other games I got into like hearthstone and you don’t end up with a hand of all lane cards or no land cards like in regular Magic, which was always insane to me that they never solved that problem but people still play it.

Allow outside audio sources

I’ve been playing for over a month now and I’ve been throughly loving the game. However I do not want to use the in game sound and instead listen to outside audio sources for music and podcasts. The fact that the game forces any other audio source to shut down when you open the app even with all of the sound settings turned off is very silly. It would be a very easy fix to disable that feature to allow players to listen to what they want when playing.

Really Fun

This game is awesome. The games are very quick paced and simple. I have one suggestion however, the character models in the lobby look kinda funky and weird. It’s not so much that I can’t play the game without laughing, but Nissa looks like she’s seen some things. The one that bothers me the most is Ral. He looks like he just committed a crime and is trying to act natural. These are fine though, I’m not trying to govern how you guys design your characters, but it’s just my personal opinion. Also, I don’t know how you guys add new Spellslingers, if you have a list or what, but I would like to see Tibalt as a Spellslinger. Other then these, you guys are doing great, keep up the good work.

A much needed IP for Wizards

Let’s face it magic the gathering is the best card game out there. I have delved and invested into all of them heavily. Hearthstone, pokemon, Yugioh, Magic, etc etc. The art and lore of magic the gathering along with the competitiveness and mechanics make it far superior to any other. HOWEVER (and this is a big however) as a 32 year old father and husband I don’t always have the time or money to enjoy mtg arena or fnm. So I often find myself mindlessly playing hearthstone. I’m glad it’s there it is great for what it is. But a simplified version of magic for phones fills a niche I think many will enjoy. The tutorial is a bit long prior to providing freedom which makes sense as people of all ages will be downloading this. But good job and keep up the good work Wizards. We love you.

Easy to learn, fun, annoying bugs

I love the universe of Magic the Gathering, but I’ve never liked any of the direct ports of the paper game to digital form. They either cut too much out, or are overly clunky. But Spellslingers is the same world and flavor in a much more digital friendly format. It isn’t the same game, but it captures the spirit in a shorter, simpler way. Is it as deep as paper Magic? No. But it isn’t child’s play either.

The monetization is odd, I wouldn’t say it’s worth spending money on as you could drop well over $100 and not get the cards you want for a super specific deck. But, if you just play you’ll unlock all the cards you want in a few months.

My big gripe is the bugs on mobile. I constantly can’t even log into the game as it thinks I’m disconnected. Then, when I do get in, half of the matches never connect and count as losses for me. I don’t have any of those issues in the Steam version. Honestly, I’d be giving it 4 or 5 stars if it was even kind of useable mobile.

Fun enough

I like the Idea of a smaller, more vibrant, character filled version of a well established card game; it gets me better acquainted to the mechanics of the full game or at least it’s something to do when I’m bored. It reminds me of what Duel Links did for Yu-go-oh, and I’m still paying that… wish I could play sideways tho. Also, I’m a big advocate for more skip options for dialogue.

Unfair decks

They need to make it more fair for facing ashiok decks cause with his ability over giving you nightmares if you have the plane that allows you to draw 2 cards sometimes it can bug the timer to where you end up not getting a turn at all. Not only that but every time I go into ranked to try and go up the ladder I end up stuck in bronze either cause they other enemy has to many creatures ready to fight me or I end up getting health taken and time stollen from a ashiok. Please fix these things it would make it more fair and a lot better if we didn’t have to worry about these things a lot.

Incredibly slow gameplay

If you’re a fan of magic maybe pass on this one. It’s like an mtg/marvel snap crossover. But the thing I liked about snap was the quick games. This is not that. All creatures have vigilance basically but damage Carrie’s over from round to round. Tutorials went by quick enough but the first 4 or 5 games I played against actual opponents boiled down to play all your creatures swing all your creatures block all their creatures repeat. Maybe it gets better later, but the games last way too long to be that stale. At least in magic you have to think about swinging out so you can keep blockers up.

Tips For Newcomers

I have played this game for 4 months now and what makes me love it very much is that It isn’t a pay to win game. No matter the level you are there isn’t restriction to getting just any card you want. The thing people need to understand is they will NEED patience, because there is items required to craft cards. You can get up to 2-3 card packs a day just playing and doing quests. If there is cards you aren’t pulling from packs but really want, you craft them. Crafting requires being in a “clan/alliance”. You request crafting items then wait 8 hours to request again. You also get crafting items from duplicate cards, once you have two of a card type it becomes “duplicate” afterwards.

The Game is difficult at times but in the end it is based on the skill and knowledge of the opponent. They might have more experience than you or they might have a better hand than you. Just breathe, it is a game and it can make me rage but I will always come back to this game. Practice, understand your cards, get use to planeswalkers play styles. You got this.

Great fun, but…

I’ve been really enjoying this game and a more fast paced take on magic.

However one specific bug has made it nearly unplayable. Every few games the opponent will end their turn and suddenly it acts as if it’s their turn again. I can’t play any cards and I watch as the timer for “THEIR TURN” ticks down until suddenly…opponents turn again.

This bug entirely wastes your turn. If it’s fixed I’d easily change to a 5 star but it’s laughable how atrocious this makes competitive play right now

Teferi Broken.

I made a previous review about how broken teferi is and that will all the traps being played you can only use 8 cards in your whole deck because 22 cards get countered. You guys over buffed teferi and now I’m giving up and going to play teferi since I have all cards and planeswalkers. This game really became either rush decks or teferi stall decks for late game. Its excrutiating to play. Now I can’t play my favorite late game decks anymore. very upsetting. Its going to be 2 stars until this changes. I’m sorry but i’ll change it if the next patch changes anything.

It’s FUN

I always thought Magic The Gathering was extremely complicated, with dozens of different mechanics and combinations to figure out, took the fun out of playing for me, but this game makes it SIMPLE. It’s fast paced and visually pleasing! The spells and monster appearances make the game worthwhile as well as simple combat. Definitely give it a go :)

Hip, Fun and Highly Monetized

Overall this game is an interesting take on the MtG series. With that being said, don’t expect the same game. This is entirely different, fast paced card game that feels more like Hearthstone with an MTG skin over it. Though it is very fun, progression through this game such as unlocking new cards and ranks moves at a snails pace as it desperately wants your money. I’ve sunk in a good amount of time and I’ve only unlocked 2 Spellslingers and because these playable characters are mana locked (Except for the 6 splash cards) I may never be able to play every deck unless I give in to the pay to win.

Please more than 1 chance at events

Please give events more than 1 chance to succeed. This is very disheartening and leads to rage quit attitudes. I’m not saying give me an easy win, I’m just saying give me more than 1 shot because if I pull a bad hand, I get no chance unless I spend cash. I have spent plenty of cash and I hope that you can realize that additional chances will lead to better moral, thus increasing chances to make a sale.

Advanced players vs beginners, unfair leveling up system!

The game leveling up system needs major improvements. I’m a big Dungeons & Dragons fan but I never played magic the gathering, so I’m a beginner. My early levels I was maybe winning 4-5 times out of 10 games on average. I was leveling up just as fast if I won or lost. My levels increased very quickly. I’m currently at 12th level and now when I play I’ll maybe win 1 game out of 10. The leveling up should be based off of wins so that everyone is at the same playing levels. I feel it’s unfair playing against advanced players when you are just a beginner. Or you could even have a rating system for players deck or cards, to separate the advanced players from the beginner players.

Also, the players that can’t afford to pay cash to get more cards or craft cards, there should be more options for those players.

Magic Spellslingers could easily be a 5 stars game with those improvements.

Glimpses of being good

Okay, to start I’ve played about 5 hours worth of game play now. So, that being said, this game is so close to actually being a binge worth game. However, it falls short and doesnt actually accomplish fun gameplay at all. In my experience so far there are certain characters and match ups that are literally unwinable unless you pay money and get better cards. This game is not balanced and is totally a coin flip on whether or not you actually get to play and strategize against your opponent. There are way to many variables for this to actually be a strategy game. Pick wrong deck or character in a totally random match up and the game is over before it even starts. You’re better off playing slay the spire if your looking for a balanced strategy card game! Occasionally you get an actual fun close match up that gives you that spark of what the game is supposed to be but those are so far and few between that your better off playing a different game.

1000 gems for one card????

Ok here I am again with ANOTHER review. My complaint THIS TIME? The store…. Look… we all know it’s a new game that’s been in development for Easter’s and y’all tryna get your money back. Cool! But prorate the dang packs. When I have 6/7 cards for the Maniac pack, and my brother has two, and it costs us BOTH 1000 gems, that’s shady af…. Just saying. I spend money on the game, I get it, if this was real life and I’m playing cards I need to buy every pack to get the cards I want, but the fact is y’all are preying on the weak like Michael Myers chasing Stephen Hawking. Just because you know that not everyone pays attention doesn’t mean it’s ok…. Have some integrity man, stop pretending you’re hearthstone and be a BETTER game….

Response from developer

Hi there, thanks for sharing this.  Ranks are typically reset each month to keep the spirit of competition alive (and so players can earn rewards). If you're seeing anything else that seems out of the ordinary, please reach out to CS and we'll investigate further.  https://magicspellslingers-support.wizards.com/hc/en-us

Ehh it’s another pay to win game.

It’s okay until you realize the only way to play is ranked and then when you get to realize that unless you pour money into the game you can’t win. It has been out a couple weeks and ppl already have the foil legends. I have made it to gold in the ranked and the only ppl I come up against are Ashiok and Angrath. They are way to over powered with their abilities. It was fun for the first couple weeks but then you get to the point where unless you buy the gems or gold it becomes another app sitting there until i need space on my phone.

I’ve played mtg all my life

This game is exactly what I was looking for in a phone game. I’ve played a lot of different ccg and tcg games on my phone, Hearthstone, Plants vs Zombie Heros, Marvel Snap, and normal Magic The bathing arena card games but this one has that arcade quick battle feel. It plays like normal mtg but just a little bit different and I love it
