Convenient iOS document creation

Mellel is my favorite app to create documents on my iPad—simple powerful and convenient. My one complaint is that the document page does not seem to support folders so document organization is extremely handicapped.

additional Mellel folders

just create a folder in Files app and drag to Mellel folder

Really want to like the app but have a few issues with it

The idea of having Mellel on my iPad, portable…powerful I really like. There’s a few things I think it really needs to be a better mobile writing experience (and if they exist already please let me know). 1. Ability to set keyboard shortcuts for different auto-titles, and a custom font (like body with red text), bullet, and outlines. This constant task of having to tap insert and reselect the number slows me down incredibly. 2. The mac keyboard shortcuts do not work properly to navigate lines. The very important cmd+ left arrow, or cmd+ right arrow should navigate on the current line and they do not. They jump to the top of the document, but not even the actual top (which is the purpose of cmd+ up arrow/down arrow which work as expected). 3. Proper folder support in the Documents view - no idea why there are no folders, but I just have a bunch of documents in an unorganized group. Even if I have my documents in folders they just all show in place. 4. Ability to open Mellel files as a pdf on iPhone from iCloud, or a Mellel Viewer app for iPhone… I don’t always have my iPad or computer with me so this is really essential as well. 5. Click+shift to highlight a section of test does not work as well as click and drag to highlight text. (Apple magic keyboard). If these could be fixed it would make the writing experience so much better, thanks!

great app

I love this app! Wonderful for right to left languages. Works great for English also.

Extemely limited!

Mellel doesn’t even have autocorrect! How useless is that? I’ve tried it several times and fail to see any advantages over other note-taking apps such as Apple Notes, for example. Or Microsoft Word or Apple Pages (these are excellent). Many others are way more capable than this overly-simplified one.

Does not integrate with Siri (dictation)

Update 7 (2/2020): Siri dictation still doesn’t work right.

Update 6 (2/2020): Siri dictation still (and still) doesn’t work right.

Update 5 (6/2019): Siri dictation still doesn’t work right.

Update 4 (11/2018): Siri dictation still doesn’t work right. This is the only word processor I have that doesn’t work.

Update 3: Siri dictation still doesn’t work right.

Update2: Siri still doesn’t work right.

Update: Still useless if you rely on Siri to input text. After using it today, it’s beginning to crash quite often and does not retain what is inputted. Going downhill fast!

When using Siri for dictation, Mellel does not work. The complete sentence shows up after you read it, but then is cut by up to 75% when "Done" is pressed.

It feels outdated

I WANT to like this app, because I love the desktop version of Mellel. But it’s just not “there” yet as an app in and of itself. It feels more like an early iPad app, a companion to the “real” application than an actual tool.

Terrific complement to Mellel for Mac

I use the Mac version for documents with many 'chapters' and sub-heading with a table of contents. I love it. And Mellel for IPad means that I can take my Documents with me and work on them away from home. There are two things I would like to see for this app. 1. To be able to organize several documents into one notebook or file. 2. To be able to use the system emojis in a document as well as change font colors within a document.

Limited Power

This is the companion iOS app to Mellel word processor, which is a unique and fine piece of software.

Mellel on iOS is very good for writing and editing, especially long form writing. It is also so buggy that currently it’s use is limited. Prime example is iCloud Drive—you never know if the app is going to read the drive’s contents, and it usually does not, and fixing that is pretty much rolling the dice via reboots.

Since this currently does one thing that I don’t need right now, I’ve stopped using it. Whenever the iCloud integration works, I’ll start using it again.

Wow ... I want my money back

This app is not finished. It's terribly buggy. For example, if you do "list" as the first thing that you do, you can't delete the "bullet" or "number" of the list. It's stuck on the first line. No way of deleting it. Undo won't work once you close the document.

It's very difficult to select and drag to highlight a clause or sentence.

You cannot change the styles. If you want to create your own styles, forget it. You're stuck with the styles they give you when you get the app.

I've used it for five minutes and it's awful. Please update and fix these problems.

Misleading description

As another review notes, there's no apparent Dropbox integration—despite the description stating clearly that Dropbox integration is a feature. Let's get this sorted out, guys! Many of us use Dropbox as a key part of our workflow, and if you're going to claim to support it you need to actually support it.

Dropbox not working

The app description clearly says dropbox is supported. All other cloud services apear on the list, but not dropbox. I did click on "it is not there either. I use dropbox for all my file. This renders mellel useless for me, and the description is deceitful. How can I get my money back?

No import from dropbox

According to the documentation, you are supposed to be able to import from Dropbox, but there seems to be no way to do that with this version, which makes it much less useful. You have to rely on iCloud.

IPad Mac versions of powerful multilingual word processor

If you do academic writing, and you want to use either iPad or Mac (whichever is available at the time) on the same documents (not copies) -- this is it. Yes I wish it were a more standard format -- I have had little problems exporting to .RTF though. Forget the jumping through the export/ input hoops. And you do not have to sync Scrivener style either. (I love Scrivener by the way -- it just does not really support local and non local edits of one document). And all of of know the the problems of working with various incantations of Microsoft Word. Unless Nisus Writer Pro offers a iPad version -- I will use Mellel.

Mellel for iPad is also does an incredible job of hiding complex abilities within a sparse looking interface.

If you just do simple letters, you might stick with Pages.

Rock solid word processor

The Mac version is fantastic and this looks to be taking that and giving us a great piece of software that works and doesn't rely on a subscription. So get it.

Can't open from Dropbox, slow on older iPad!

It retains the format from the Mac version, but one can't open a document directly from Dropbox, neither save to it. Very slow on older iPad. The experience is not as good as Mac version.

Not ready for prime time

I am giving this app two stars for effort. I am an avid user of Mellel's Mac program, which coupled with Bookends are great writing tools for researchers. I am currently working on my dissertation which has figures, charts, and graphs. While importing the document, there doesn't seem to be any problems, writing and editing seems to be extremely limited. Do not expect anything close to the Mac computer experience. Importing images can be convoluted, editing hierarchies are possible, but often things are not saved (which is the most frustrating part!). To be honest, iCloud syncing is abysmal and Dropbox doesn't seem to sync the aforementioned edits. While I recognize that this is a new attempt at adapting a program to iOS (which I am supportive of, hence the two stars) this App needs a lot of love and effort to make this a potentially game changing app for the iPad Pro. Please keep working as I do believe in the creators of this software! If you want a basic text editor, this is fine (but expensive).

No export/import

Not a standalone word processor yet. Seems only good as a complimentary app to the Mac software, which I do not own.

Best app for academic or any writing needing footnotes

My long search for a writing app on iPad that can handle footnotes is finally over. I have written my entire dissertation on Mellel on my Mac and can now finally sync it to my iPad. The iPad version has a great interface and handles all formatting perfectly. The app has the same functionality as the desktop version but with a true iOS interface. Very good.

Mellel is a great app!

I use Mellel regularly on my computer for all of my academic writing and word processing in general. Mellel for iPad is therefore a welcome addition to my workflow. The app has the same flexible no-nonsense feel, and has great syncing capabilities. I am very happy with both the Mac and iOS versions. Hurray!
