What's New in Meshtastic

2.7.18

August 6, 2026

* New Protection Level security setting: choose Compatible, Balanced, or Strict packet authentication (on supported firmware), matching the Android app * Local-only waypoints that stay on your device and are never sent over the mesh * Delete any waypoint, including ones locked by another node * Stuck messages now show "Not delivered" with a retry option instead of "Sending…" forever * Fixed random disconnects during larger writes like renaming a node or saving config

Works OK, but August update deleted message history

August update seems to work more or less OK—except it deleted the entire history of past messages from all channels, as well as any older nodes in the list. And the map no longer shows range circles (EDIT: give them time to show up). Minor thing: the node list no longer had a total number of nodes at the top just “…” where apparently a 4 digit total no longer can fit. Tip: drag the edge of the node list and you can make it bigger to show the number. (This is on iPad.)

Works great

Wish this app would properly show nodes sorted be distance as the Android app does.

A really cool technology

It’s a great app for camping communication, large property communication, or communication around cities and even regions if you’ve got a big enough mesh. If you’re new to the mesh LoRa technology, think of it a little bit like walkie talkies but instead of talking, you text, and texts can be encrypted and sent over private groups (similar to group chats on a phone). But at the same time, nodes can receive others messages and repeat them.

FAQ

What is Meshtastic?

Meshtastic is an open-source application that creates a decentralized, off-grid mesh network using low-power LoRa radios. It allows users to send text messages without relying on traditional cellular or WiFi infrastructure.

How does Meshtastic work?

The app leverages LoRa radios to establish a mesh network, meaning devices can relay messages for each other. This creates a decentralized communication system that can extend beyond direct line-of-sight and function in areas with no internet or cell service.

Is Meshtastic free to use?

Yes, Meshtastic is an open-source project and is free to download and use. There are no in-app purchases or advertisements associated with the application itself.

What are the main use cases for Meshtastic?

Meshtastic is ideal for situations where reliable communication is critical but traditional networks are unavailable. This includes outdoor activities like hiking and camping, emergency preparedness, and communication in remote or disaster-stricken areas.
