Great app
This app is so essential to my Japanese learning journey. It's so well thought and designed. I love the Anki cards app, but this one takes it to another level.
Unusable most of the time
I really like what they did there. The service is just awesome - if it was working. I haven’t been able to use the App as well as the Browser version for the past weeks and mostly months due to the application being just super buggy. Multiple bugs, small ones but also multiple ones where each one is just breaking the service completely. I cannot recommend for at least the next year until they maybe release the first stable version. Please fix!

Incredible for Japanese, Best Language Learning Platform I’ve Tried
This is legit one of the best language learning platforms you could use. Seriously, their academy course combined with their superior SRS flashcard system (better than Anki imo), is so effective and makes studying something I genuinely look forward to. Kanji is actually fun now, when I used to be afraid of it. Learning the foundation of the language is so well explained and I always feel I have a perfect amount of studying each day to feel progression yet not be overloaded. Seriously, try this out. Best experience i’ve had language learning yet.

You’re gonna have to fork over the money…
Yeah, no, I don’t know what I was expecting. With the advertising I saw online I thought this would’ve been at least somewhat free, but no the app shoves it’s subscription service in your face and your only other option is to be set back to the sign in page like a filthy cheap scrub. Obviously this app is an amazing resource and I hope the developers continue to prosper in their pursuit of making learning better! However, with all the other apps that teach your target language with similar pricing, I sadly can’t recommend it if you’re already drowning in services (ie: bunpro, Duolingo, and whatever else is on the market.) But if you’re not me go right ahead the UI is amazing and it looks engaging!

Migaku helps with consistency
I love Migaku since I can consistently do lessons everyday at my own pace. Sometimes I can do a 15 minute lesson, other times I can stretch it to 45 minutes.

Decent concept but terribly buggy, incomplete, and also AI-reliant
There’s AI stuck in all parts of this, and even though they have settings to opt out (clicked about 6 settings to turn off the AI and was stuck with 2 ways it could not be removed), there was still more ways the AI was popping up without approval. I clicked on a word that was highlighted (just to mark it as known!) and it was like “here’s a ChatGPT summary”. Don’t want that! Let a dictionary pop up, not a paragraph of customerservice nonsense, made by a 50% inaccurate nonsense machine.
The browser extension in Chrome was buggy and slow, and kept crashing. The iOS app doesn’t even want to review flashcards after you’ve reviewed them for the day. (What if I want to see them again?)
The website you log into doesn’t have info - it’s a landing page and not much else. No dashboard of stats, nor card review access.
There’s no vocab course for the language they support.
There’s not an easy way to make it that you know a word (had to search that and read it off a discussion board). It was easier to summon AI ChatGPT without intent than it was to mark a word as known.
Also, the advertisements around the app (like customer reviews you find) feel scammy because they often describe things that can’t be done in the app - just to piggyback off of other programs’ advertising in forums.
Also, it couldn’t even recognize words in language or not in language - so YouTube was highlighted with every English word possible, but French words with apostrophes were treated as separate words (J’ai is ai and aujourd’hui is aujord).
Finally, it removed me from learning because it wouldn’t work on the apps (it was fighting with YouTube). I’m better off writing the words and definitions I find in context and then studying the new-words-of-the-day.

A company not blinded by greed
I've been using Migaku for 6 months and there is a clear and drastic improvement in my language ability. I talk to Japanese people every day and they notice the difference too. This is what happens when a company makes something that is actually designed to work effectively. If you use Duolingo, please, get rid of it as it is designed to sink you into an endless cycle of making you think you are progressing. It's a strategy to make money and not actually help you. Migaku is a heck of a commitment because if you miss days, you will have to re-review a lot of material. This is because of how the flash card system works. Showing you content right before you forget it. And yes, it actually works but you have to commit to it and it can take several hours a day to complete. But if you aren't studying that long, you won't learn. Anyway, I've said what I wanted to say. This app is the real deal. Seriously.

Super helpful for my language learning. About to finish the main course for Japanese after using the app for 6 months. Loving it so far and seeing real progress in my recognition and recall.

seems like the modern version of Anki. There are bugs but it's about as easy as it gets to immersing in 2026

I’ve used many apps to learn Japanese. This by far has been the most useful app/tool I’ve used. Great for serious learners and beginners alike.

Die erste App, die mich zum Japanischlernen bei der Stange gehalten hat. Ich nähere mich jetzt der Grenze von 1500 Wörtern und kann damit schon einen guten Teil einfacher Videos und Podcasts verstehen. Mein Tipp: Unter 200 Reviews bleiben.
Not the best
- The app movie subtitles only work if you use a browser, in a pc, and after downloading a extension.
- is not very intuitive, using it is quite frustrating in the beginning, not fun, not easy to use.

Unable to use
Just signed up to use the app, verified my email and then the app immediately said the trial period was over? I’m assuming this is a weird error, but pity as this makes the app unusable and I never got to try out the features. Will be uninstalling.
Effectively no review
The app demands that you subscribe even to try it, and says my review period has expired even though I’ve never used it.
So… you want me to pay $130 for it without even seeing it? I think not. If your app doesn’t suck, let me use it for a decent period without subscribing at all.
