A company not blinded by greed
I've been using Migaku for 6 months and there is a clear and drastic improvement in my language ability. I talk to Japanese people every day and they notice the difference too. This is what happens when a company makes something that is actually designed to work effectively. If you use Duolingo, please, get rid of it as it is designed to sink you into an endless cycle of making you think you are progressing. It's a strategy to make money and not actually help you. Migaku is a heck of a commitment because if you miss days, you will have to re-review a lot of material. This is because of how the flash card system works. Showing you content right before you forget it. And yes, it actually works but you have to commit to it and it can take several hours a day to complete. But if you aren't studying that long, you won't learn. Anyway, I've said what I wanted to say. This app is the real deal. Seriously.

better than anki
seems like the modern version of Anki. There are bugs but it's about as easy as it gets to immersing in 2026

Not the best
- The app movie subtitles only work if you use a browser, in a pc, and after downloading a extension.
- is not very intuitive, using it is quite frustrating in the beginning, not fun, not easy to use.

Unable to use
Just signed up to use the app, verified my email and then the app immediately said the trial period was over? I’m assuming this is a weird error, but pity as this makes the app unusable and I never got to try out the features. Will be uninstalling.
Effectively no review
The app demands that you subscribe even to try it, and says my review period has expired even though I’ve never used it.

Almost There
I downloaded it and it seems like a really neat concept. However, the app is still heavily underdeveloped and commands a way too high lifetime tier to even be worth it. I suggest lowering the lifetime, actually getting some languages, and not forcing immediate signup to view the content.
I with it had more dictionary functions.
I wish it had both English-to-Japanese and Japanese-to-English dictionary functions. I’m studying English, and it would be great if I could look up English words that correspond to Japanese words and add them directly to my vocabulary list.
Why is this not the top language learning app again?
I’ve been wanting to learn Japanese for a few months and watched tons of videos on how to get started but still had a hard time knowing quite what to do…but then I found Migaku. This combined pretty much everything I’d read and watched online about how to learn Japanese into one app. Everything is taught through flashcards in a spaced repetition system. It starts by teaching Kana, then around 200 Kanji/kanji components. After that it begins teaching words using those kanji, which are always and tied into a new grammar topics and put in context with a sentence. Kana and Kanji flashcards come with mnemonics, and you can add personalized ways to remember to both these and word flashcards. After 3-6 months, you have been introduced to the top 80% of words and kanji and can begin learning through immersion, creating in depth flashcards of new words straight from books or tv shows. I’ve been at it for about a month and am learning new things every day. I no longer have to wonder what I’m supposed to be learning or if I’m doing it right—Migaku lays it out so clearly. I feel like a child learning to read, with a thrill of pride and excitement every time I pick out a single word I understand in my new language in a random show or song or book. It takes time and effort, but so far it seems that this app really teaches you. It’s not just a money grab or a scam or a game, but it’s also not a textbook or lecture. In my humble opinion, it’s seems to be reaching above all of this. It seems to be the perfect way to learn a language :3

Wildly useful
From recording audio and making flashcards using YouTube to just taking lessons is so fun and effective. Must have for any language.

By far the best app I’ve personally used for learning Japanese. This is the number thing I’d recommend if you are serious about learning a language.

Japanese Migaku is amazing
I’ve been using Migaku for studying Japanese and honestly it’s helped me way more than I expected. I really like how it lets you learn directly from real content like videos and shows, instead of just textbooks. The Japanese section makes it easy to look up words, see example sentences, and turn things you don’t know into flashcards right away.
At first it felt a little confusing to set up, and I still mess up the settings sometimes, but once I got used to it, it became part of my daily study. I especially like how it shows pitch accent and lets you hear native pronunciation, which is something I was missing before.
It’s not perfect and sometimes I feel like I’m not using all the features correctly, but overall Migaku makes Japanese study feel more natural and less boring. I’m still a beginner, but I can tell it’s helping me understand Japanese better little by little.
