What's New in MTB Project

4.7.1

Bug fixes and maintenance

Stops logging if at all!

I’ve been using MTB Project for years. And only recently have I found that it has not been logging my rides. Or, it logs only pieces of the ride. I know there’s not charge, but if it’s not going to work. What’s the point?

08/11/2026: Started the app, made sure it started and at the end of the ride I checked the status and it dropped somehow. UGGH

No dark mode in 2026

App works okay-ish. Can’t maneuver the map while reordering as it constantly wants to recenter. Date picker when checking in doesn’t work and keyboard won’t show up.

OnX ruined this app

This used to be my go to app for finding trails. After OnX purchased this app it became virtually unusable. It crashes all the time!!

It’s especially frustrating because mtb project and mountain project were community built projects with users uploading data of their rides that helped make these maps possible. OnX ruined a wonderful collaboration between users and developers! OnX is absolutely terrible for our community.

Unstable

Crashes often, UI is hideous and text runs into graphic blocks. Borderline unusable.

FAQ

What does the MTB Project app do?

The MTB Project app serves as a comprehensive guide for mountain bikers. It provides access to over 77,000 miles of trails with detailed information, including offline maps, GPS route data, elevation profiles, and expert insights. It helps users discover new rides and navigate existing ones accurately.

How does the offline map feature work?

Downloaded trails in the app work offline, meaning you do not need cell reception to use them. This is crucial for remote areas where connectivity is unreliable. You can still see your exact location on the trail and access all downloaded route information.

Is MTB Project free to use?

Yes, the MTB Project app is free to use. The description does not mention any costs associated with downloading or using the app's core features, including offline maps and trail data. There are also no in-app purchases or advertisements mentioned.

What kind of information is available for each trail?

For each trail, you can expect detailed GPS route information, elevation profiles, high-resolution topographical maps, and photos. Local experts also provide insights into highlights and challenging features, helping you plan a great ride.

Can I track my ride with this app?

Yes, the app uses GPS to show your exact location on the trail and provide vertical profiles of your ride. However, continued use of GPS running in the background can significantly decrease battery life.
