No access to downloaded issues with discontinuation of app

I read with dismay your email announcing the discontinuation of Nat Geo’s Mobile App. And, more importantly, I would not have access to the issues I had downloaded. While I can appreciate your organization wanting to reduce the costs of maintaining your app, please reconsider your plans for discontinuation of the Nat Geo Mobile App. Not everyone has access to the Internet 24/7. At the very least , please reconsider your plans for deactivating the ability to read downloaded issues.

I have been a subscriber to National Geographic for decades. I have used the paper and digital subscription for years. The ability to download issues had been extremely important when my husband and I did not have access to the Internet, which was for extended periods of time. Due to a recent move, we could not bring years of paper issues with us. We donated them to a Veterans group library. We had counted on digital access to National Geographic.

Please reconsider your discontinuation plans. Please reconsider your plans for deactivating the ability to read downloaded issues. Some readers, including teachers around the world, have limited access to the Internet.

Dear Disney

Because you are discontinuing this app, I have lost the last true reason to subscribe to any Disney app. I will continue to be a Nat Geo supporter and subscriber because it has been a grand theme of the last 5 decades of my life—so you will still be making money off of that. But for some of us who grew up poring over the pages of the glossy magazines that turned our childhood homes into tinderboxes, this app on an iPad is the closest approximation we have that is not a fire hazard. As glitchy as it sometimes was, I have spent hours savoring its content and format. And I will spend the last few days I have with it before you snuff it out. You may leave it online and cut off support, so it can float along like some bloated carcass on the internet until, one day, it’ll sink into obscurity. Or you may disappear it suddenly into the newest, greatest Disney+ extravaganza where its quiet, straight-forward simplicity will drown in the Star Wars/Marvel/Whatever you acquire next universe(s). Either way, you have finally given this relic a reason to renew my post-COVID library card. My local library system thanks you.

Sad to see this app being shut down

Very saddened to see this app go. Having the widget on my screen has been one of my favorite things. I will probably not subscribe, and I don’t see visiting the website often without the app. It seems like a really poor choice in today’s digital world to get rid of the app. I read an article that overall it’s been downsizing for years, which is very sad since National Geographic has been around for so many decades.

Error playing videos and we’d like a kids version.

This app is awesome however, I don’t know if I’ll continue using this app because there are a couple issues that I have noticed. Number one is that there is a problem when I try to play videos where it says error and then it says airplane this video if problem persist please see our FAQ section. that is a huge problem. Also, could you please make a kids version for kids and those of us who are either too young or don’t understand the adult version? I think that could be awesome if we had a kids version of the app. Especially since some of the games don’t work very well on mobile devices on the website. If you guys could consider doing that, that would be absolutely awesome. I love the books when I get them from the store and I have learned a lot from the kids books from National Geographic kids. It would be nice to have it in an app form as well. my favorite National Geographic kids books are the 5000 awesome facts.

Dev Feedback

Articles in the widget need to refresh more frequently. The same four articles have displayed all week, significantly diminishing the usefulness of having a widget. Perhaps include articles from the past, if you’ve run out of “most recent” articles to display. Ideally, after an article in the widget has been clicked/read, it would no longer display in the widget and be replaced by a different article. I’d rather see more frequent refreshes, even if they are older articles, than simply see the latest published.

Nat Geo app

I love National Geographic magazine and have always read it when my grandfather bought it for my sister and I. My only criticism is that if you have a subscription with Disney plus and the Disney Plus Bundle that it be included with your subscription so that you can read any issue without having to pay for another subscription. always love the writing style that the magazine covers and very informative, plan on using this educational resource for my social studies classes in the future.

Absolutely awful- 0 customer support

Wow. The truth. If you can get access, great stuff. But my digital subscription won’t link to app or online. No matter what I do, won’t give me access. Logged in to account? Of course and all my information is there verifying account and history. Still pushes me to subscribe while I’m logged into my account!!!
OK, seek help from customer support. Ha! I have emailed for months. Nothing. Tried to chat multiple times. No one ever gets on. Try calling. Wait, wait, wait. In 6 months no one has ever contacted me. A worthless digital subscription that I’ve been cheated out using. Read what they allow but never subscribe because it won’t matter. Hoping this review gets someone, anyone’s attention.

National Geographic Review

National Geographic is the best. It has amazing photography and lots of scientific proven information that’s explained for the average person. It also shows biases, and theories and explains them along with information that don’t support the claim. It has a wide variety of topics to explore with lots of detail and multiple people who work hard behind the scenes to give the best information. The only negative part about it is that they can over exaggerate animal fights and predators leaving people with knowledge that makes people these amazing animals as dangerous, violent and vicious. Although they do inform people about their behavior and adaptations that help them compete in this ever changing world it gives them a bad reputation. Which leads people to want to harm them instead of protecting them from their already dwindling numbers ( such as sharks). National Geographic provides awesome information with lots of facts and details and gives both biases on topics. But some of the biases content can be perceived wrong.

Updated review - increasingly frustrated

In my initial review, I mentioned that articles could not be downloaded and then viewed offline. After multiple emails back and forth and calls with technical support, I was informed that the “download” feature within the app does not actually allow for you to view the articles when offline (I.e., not connected to wifi). Instead, it was recommended that I “save” the articles by essentially “printing to pdf” which can only be done via the website, and not the app. While doing this technically works, it isn’t pretty and most of the associated images are not included in the pdf. It is also ridiculous that these extra steps are necessary, for something that should be easily done via the app. I cannot comprehend how this oversight continues to go without a fix. The error occurs on both my iPad and iPhone, and plenty of others have mentioned the same issue in their reviews of the app. One of the main reasons I subscribe is to read while offline, and apparently this is simply not possible. Ridiculous.

So fed up with this app!

I’ve been subscribed to National Geographic for over fifty years. Love the magazine. Love the app too when it decides to recognize me!!! I don’t know what the change was but now it has decided I’m not a subscriber, apparently since I didn’t subscribe through Apple. What use is the app to me when it will not let me read any of the premium articles that I should have access to through my subscription. I’m not only ready to dump the app but to not renew my mail subscription. I only take it now for my grandchildren.

Love this app!

I absolutely love the National Geographic app and all the features it entails , including the ability the download articles for offline viewing ! National Geographic is like the (sugar free) candy to my curiosity sweet tooth. Sugar free because the information is vetted, studied and reliable and therefore not bad for me to consume ! The only downside the payment of course , but understand such renowned scientist should be compensated for their work always. Happy reading everyone !

Awful app

It remains inconceivable to me how a famous and well respected magazine like National Geographic can be so incompetent when it comes to designing a simple app to make their magazine content digitally available.

I’m a long term subscriber but would love to read the magazine anytime, anywhere on my iPad and iPhone just as conveniently as in print, yet this seems further and further from the realm of possibilities. Rather than listening to feedback, the app gets worse with every update.

Downloading issues takes forever and is horribly buggy, failed downloads cannot be repeated ending up stuck on “retry”, and issues supposedly downloaded don’t open or properly without internet connection - making any download redundant in the first place.

The link between my subscription and the app constantly breaks, and can also only be fixed with a working internet connection - not helpful when you want to read the magazine on a flight without wifi and don’t want to carry it in print.

Unique magazine

I have been reading NG my entire life and am 79. Was in school libraries as we did not subscribe growingbup. Married in 68 and subscribed ever since. Always kept issues as too dear to throw out. Finally after 35 years donated to a local library and hard to find one that accepted. Sad as new generations need to hold your yellow magazine in their hands- too much digital. Important objects are needed to hold and cherish.
Great that all issuesare on line now for all.
Start a rereading program where subscribers can contribute to libraries for new minds to read !

Favorite reading; personal, family, teaching

I love my National Geographic membership. Every day there are fascinating new things to learn. I have used articles in my classroom and shared them with my own children. I love learning more about our amazing Earth and the people in it. The photos, the articles, and the videos have enriched my mind and even at times brought me to tears with their beauty.

I love this app! So much information!

I am a middle school student and I LOVE reading so much and when I got the app I was thrilled! With their unbiased information and inclusion of any community, it be LGBTQ+, People of colour, or any group history continues to neglect and not record, it is a great place for someone who loves to learn. I can confirm that any age, young or old will live this app and spend many waking hours on it reading and going down rabbit holes.😬 I have so much respect for the writers on NatGeo and love what they do.

Designed Badly

I recently downloaded this onto my new iPad Air (2022). If you navigate to a scan of an archived (pre-2008) article, there is no way to navigate out; the only thing that seems possible is shut down the iPad completely and then turn it back on.
Also: when navigating within the scan, the place-marker at the bottom does not respond to touch, thus one must navigate page by page.
Both of these faults are really quite bad and National Geographic should be embarrassed to have authored such a poorly designed app. Archived issues, one of the most persuasive selling points of the app are, effectively, nigh useless.

No 2 page spread?

I was really hoping I could read Nat Geo on my ipad just like the printed magazine, seeing those big beautiful two page spreads in all their glory as they were meant to be seen/read. I get it on a phone due to the real estate, but on the ipad I only see one page at a time where I should be able to view two. Or at least have the option to go landscape and switch to two pages. Am I missing something? Is this not possible? I have ipad Air 3rd generation, iOS 15.5.

Good but needs to be better

I like the content and the pictures. I want a way to increase font size. So far I can't find anything that lets me do that. Some days I'm fine with the standard font and some I reach for glasses or just give up and read something else.

Fantastic magazine

Inspiring and in-depth stories, beautiful pictures, and rich contents covering nature, history and many other topics. The mobile app shows not only the current month print, but all the prints all the way back to 1900’s. Love it and please keep up the great work!

No photos when offline,why?

As a professional photographer myself I’ve always loved reading the magazine. Great stories incredible images. The only thing I don’t like about the new app is downloaded, offline issue of the magazine are saved as text only. What is the point of downloading the worlds best photographed magazine if I can’t see the images when I don’t have an internet connection? It would be nice to be resting up from an amazing day of photography for example in base camp inside the arctic circle and be able to view and read a nat geo story about the arctic circle.
